Abstract

A system for detecting a gas may include a first laser having a wavelength overlapping with two or more absorption features in a spectrum of the gas, a second laser having a wavelength centered away from absorbing features in the spectrum of the gas, and at least one sensor to determine a received power of the first laser and a received power of the second laser.

Claims (23)

1. A system for open path gas detection, the system comprising:

a laser having a wavelength centered on two or more absorption features in a spectrum of a gas and a linewidth overlapping with the two or more absorption features in the spectrum of the gas and an adjacent region of lower absorption in the spectrum of the gas;

at least one sensor to determine a received power of the laser including a first portion corresponding to overlap with the two or more absorption features and a second portion corresponding to overlap with the adjacent region of lower absorption;

a computing device that executes instructions to detect the gas based on the received power of the laser, wherein the computing device executes instructions to quantify an amount of the gas between the laser and a target based on a difference between the first portion of the received power of the laser and the second portion of the received power of the laser; and

one or more of a grating, prism, or filter configured to split the received power into the first portion of the received power of the laser and the second portion of the received power of the laser.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the laser is directed at a target, and wherein the received power of the laser is a power of the laser as reflected from the target.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the computing device executes instructions to detect the gas based on a comparison between the received power of the laser and an expected power of the laser.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the expected power is determined using spectral parameters of the gas under sensing conditions.

5. The system of claim 3 , wherein the spectral parameters of the gas under the sensing conditions are determined using a reference cell.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the computing device executes instructions to detect the gas based on the received power of the laser by comparing the first portion of the received power of the laser to the second portion of the received power of the laser.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more sensors include a first sensor to determine the first portion of the received power of the laser and a second sensor to determine the second portion of the received power of the laser.

8. A method for open path gas detection, the method comprising:

directing a laser at a target, the laser having a wavelength centered on two or more absorption features in a spectrum of a gas and a linewidth overlapping with the two or more absorption features in the spectrum of the gas and an adjacent region of lower absorption in the spectrum of the gas;

determining, using at least one sensor, a received power of the laser including a first portion corresponding to overlap with the two or more absorption features and a second portion corresponding to overlap with the adjacent region of lower absorption;

detecting, using a computing device, the gas based on the received power of the laser;

quantifying, by the computing device, an amount of the gas between the laser and a target based on a difference between the first portion of the received power of the laser and the second portion of the received power of the laser; and

splitting, using one or more of a grating, prism, or filter, the received power into the first portion of the received power of the laser and the second portion of the received power of the laser.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the received power of the laser is a power of the laser as reflected from the target.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the computing device detects the gas based on a comparison between the received power of the laser and an expected power of the laser.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising determining, by the computing device, the expected power using spectral parameters of the gas under sensing conditions.

12. The method of claim 10 , further comprising determining, by the computing device, the spectral parameters of the gas under the sensing conditions using a reference cell.

13. The method of claim 8 , wherein detecting, by the computing device, the gas based on the received power of the laser includes comparing the first portion of the received power of the laser to the second portion of the received power of the laser.

14. The method of claim 8 , wherein determining, by the one or more sensors, the received power of the laser includes determining, by a first sensor of the one or more sensors, the first portion of the received power of the laser and determining, by a second sensor of the one or more sensors, the second portion of the received power of the laser.
