Abstract

Illumination devices with improved color mixing optics are disclosed herein for mixing the colors produced by a multi-colored LED emitter module to produce uniform color throughout the entire beam angle of the output light beam, along with smoother edges and improved center beam intensity. Embodiments disclosed herein include a unique arrangement of multi-color LEDs within an emitter module, a unique exit lens with different patterns of lenslets on opposing sides of the lens, and other associated optical features that thoroughly mix the different color components, and as such, provide uniform color across the output beam exiting the illumination device. Additional embodiments disclosed herein include a unique arrangement of photodetectors within the primary optics structure of the LED emitter module that ensure the optical feedback system properly measures the light produced by all similarly colored emission LEDs.

Claims (45)

1. A light-emitting diode (LED) emitter system, comprising:

an LED array that includes N LED chains disposed on a substrate;

wherein N is a whole number greater than 2;

wherein each of the N LED chains have a different emission color;

wherein each of the N LED chains includes N LED emitters having the same emission color; and

wherein the N LED chains are disposed to form an N-sided polygonal array on the substrate;

N photodetectors disposed on the substrate;

wherein the N photodetectors are disposed evenly about the perimeter of the N-side polygonal array; and

an optical structure disposed over LED array and the N photodetectors.

2. The LED emitter system of claim 1 wherein the LED emitters forming the LED array are disposed on the substrate such that adjacent LEDs do not have the same emission color.

3. The LED emitter system of claim 2 wherein the optical structure comprises a dome-shaped transparent structure.

4. The LED emitter system of claim 3 wherein the optical structure comprises a transparent hemispherical structure.

5. The LED emitter system of claim 3 wherein the dome-shaped optical structure comprises a structure having a diameter from about 1.5 times to about 4 times the diameter of the LED array.

6. The LED emitter system of claim 1 wherein the N photodetectors comprise at least one of: one or more red LEDs or one or more yellow LEDs.

7. The LED emitter system of claim 1 wherein the N photodetectors are coupled in electrical parallel.

8. The LED emitter system of claim 1 wherein at least a portion of an external surface of the optical structure comprises a textured surface.

9. The LED emitter system of claim 1 wherein the LED emitters forming the LED array are disposed such that LED emitters having the greatest difference in emission color are positioned proximate each other.

10. A light-emitting diode (LED) lighting fixture, comprising:

light-emitting diode (LED) emitter system that includes:

an LED array that includes N LED chains disposed on a substrate;

wherein N is a whole number greater than 2;

wherein each of the N LED chains have a different emission color;

wherein each of the N LED chains includes N LED emitters having the same emission color; and

wherein the N LED chains are positioned to form an N-sided polygonal array on the substrate;

N photodetectors disposed on the substrate;

wherein the N photodetectors are disposed evenly about the perimeter of the N-side polygonal array; and

an optical structure disposed over LED array and the N photodetectors an exit lens;

LED driver circuitry; and

control circuitry operatively coupled to the LED driver circuitry, the LED driver circuitry to, at intervals:

cause the LED driver circuitry to place all N LED chains in a non-illuminated state

cause the LED driver circuitry to illuminate one of the N LED chains

receive, from the N photodetectors one or more input signals indicative of a measured illumination level produced by the illuminated one of the N LED chains.

11. The LED lighting fixture of claim 10 :

wherein the exit lens comprises a first, internal, surface and a second, external surface; and

wherein the first surface comprises a plurality of lenslets having a first aperture diameter; and

wherein the second surface comprises a plurality of lenslets having a second aperture diameter that is less than the first aperture diameter.

12. The LED lighting fixture of claim 11 wherein a center point of one the plurality of lenslets disposed on the second surface of the exit lens align with a center point of each one of the plurality of lenslets disposed on the first surface of the exit lens.

13. The LED lighting fixture of claim 10 wherein the LED emitters forming the LED array are disposed on the substrate such that adjacent LEDs do not have the same emission color.

14. The LED lighting fixture of claim 13 wherein the optical structure comprises a dome-shaped transparent structure.

15. The LED lighting fixture of claim 14 wherein the optical structure comprises a transparent hemispherical structure.

16. The LED emitter system of claim 14 wherein the dome-shaped optical structure comprises a structure having a diameter from about 1.5 times to about 4 times the diameter of the LED array.

17. The LED lighting fixture of claim 10 wherein the N photodetectors comprise at least one of: one or more red LEDs or one or more yellow LEDs.

18. The LED lighting fixture of claim 10 wherein the N photodetectors are coupled in electrical parallel.

19. The LED lighting fixture of claim 10 wherein at least a portion of an external surface of the optical structure comprises a textured surface.

20. The LED lighting fixture of claim 10 wherein the LED emitters forming the LED array are disposed such that LED emitters having the greatest difference in emission color are positioned proximate each other.
