Abstract

A virtual device management system for creating and implementing virtual devices and associated methods are provided herein. The system presents to a user a list of devices available for combining to create the virtual device. When the system receives from the user a selection of two or more devices that the user wishes to combine to create the virtual device, the system presents to the user a list of available functions that can be performed by the virtual device based on the selected devices. The system then receives from the user a selection of one or more functions and configures the virtual device to perform the selected functions. The system can also be configured to present, via a user interface via a mobile application running on a user device, a plurality of virtual devices with predetermined functionalities that are created by detecting the various connected devices within an IoT network.

Claims (52)

1 . A method for configuring a virtual device that is representative of a combination of a pair of physical devices, the method comprising:

identifying

(i) a first set of actions that are performable by a first one of the pair of physical devices, and

(ii) a second set of actions that are performable by a second one of the pair of physical devices;

establishing, based on an analysis of the first and second sets of actions, a third set of actions that are performable by the virtual device,

wherein each action in the third set of actions involves at least one action in the first set of actions being performed by the first physical device and at least one action in the second set of actions being performed by the second physical device;

receiving input that is indicative of a selection of a given action from among the third set of actions that are performable by the virtual device; and

configuring the virtual device to perform the given action.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

presenting, on an interface, a plurality of visual indicia that are representative of a plurality of physical devices that are collectively representative of a computing system,

wherein the plurality of physical devices includes the pair of physical devices;

receiving second input that is indicative of a selection of a first one of the plurality of visual indicia that corresponds to the first physical device; and

receiving third input that is indicative of a selection of a second one of the plurality of visual indicia that corresponds to the second physical device.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein said identifying is performed in response to receiving the second and third inputs.

4 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

checking, in response to receiving the second and third inputs, compatibility of the first and second physical devices, so as to ensure that the first and second physical devices are combinable to create the virtual device.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the pair of physical devices includes at least two of a camera, a door lock, a doorbell, a light, a sensor, a robotic vacuum, a speaker, and an electrical outlet.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said identifying comprises:

generating the first set of actions based on an analysis of usage of the first physical device, and

generating the second set of actions based on an analysis of usage of the second physical device.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein said configuring comprises:

implementing a rule for the first physical device, the second physical device, or the first and second physical devices, such that the virtual device is configured to perform a function.

8 . A method for creating a virtual device that is representative of a combination of a pair of physical devices selected from among a plurality of physical devices that operate in a networked environment, the method comprising:

obtaining a set of vectors, each of which represents an action involving one of the plurality of physical devices;

applying, to the set of vectors, a machine learning model that is trained to identify the pair of physical devices that are used in combination with each other; and

presenting, on an interface, a recommendation to create the virtual device by combining the pair of physical devices.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein said obtaining comprises:

acquiring data that indicates usage of the plurality of physical devices, and

generating the set of vectors based on an analysis of the data.

10 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the pair of physical devices includes a first physical device and a second physical device, and wherein the second physical device is one of multiple physical devices that are identified on the interface as candidates for combination with the first physical device to create the virtual device.

11 . The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

receiving input that is indicative of a selection, made through the interface, of the second physical device from among the multiple physical devices; and

configuring the virtual device to perform a function by implementing a rule for at least one of the pair of physical devices.

12 . The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

receiving input that is indicative of a confirmation, made through the interface, to create the virtual device; and

configuring the virtual device to perform a function by implementing a rule for at least one of the pair of physical devices.

13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the pair of physical devices includes a first physical device and a second physical device, and wherein the function specifies that in the event that either (i) the first physical device performs an action or (ii) a criterion is determined to be satisfied through analysis of an output produced by the first physical device, then the second physical device performs another action.

14 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the pair of physical devices includes a first physical device and a second physical device, and wherein the machine learning model identifies the pair of physical devices based on a determination that the first and second physical devices are used within a specified duration of each other.

15 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the pair of physical devices includes a first physical device and a second physical device, and wherein the machine learning model identifies the pair of physical devices based on a determination that the first and second physical devices are used in combination with each other more frequently than a given frequency.

16 . The method of claim 8 , further comprising:

checking compatibility of the pair of physical devices, so as to ensure that the pair of physical devices are combinable to create the virtual device.

17 . The method of claim 16 , wherein said checking comprises verifying a logical relationship of the pair of physical devices.

18 . The method of claim 16 , wherein said checking comprises verifying a spatial relationship of the pair of physical devices.

19 . A non-transitory medium with instructions stored thereon that, when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

identifying a plurality of physical devices that operate in a networked environment and independently controllable;

establishing, based on an analysis of usage of the plurality of physical devices, a first one of the plurality of physical devices that is used in combination with a second one of the plurality of physical devices;

receiving input that is indicative of a confirmation to create a virtual device by combining the first and second physical devices; and

configuring the virtual device to perform a function by implementing a rule for the first physical device, the second physical device, or the first and second physical devices.

20 . The non-transitory medium of claim 19 , wherein the operations further comprise:

establishing a first location of the first physical device;

establishing a second location of the second physical device; and

permitting configuration of the virtual device in response to a determination, based on an analysis of the first and second locations, that the first and second physical devices are located in a same environment or are otherwise logically associated with each other.
