Abstract

An algae separation system can comprise a tank comprising an algae separation chamber. The system can comprise a first inlet to supply algae-containing water to a mixing region of the algae separation chamber. The system can comprise a second inlet to supply gas-containing water comprising dissolved gas to the mixing region of the algae separation chamber. The system can comprise a bubble generator in fluid communication with the second inlet, the bubble generator configured to generate a plurality of bubbles from the gas-containing water and to supply the plurality of bubbles to the mixing region to mix with the algae-containing water.

26 . A method of separating algae, the method comprising:

supplying algae-containing water, via a first inlet, to a mixing region of an algae separation chamber having a flotation region;

supplying gas-containing water comprising dissolved gas, via a second inlet, to the mixing region of the algae separation chamber;

generating a plurality of bubbles from the gas-containing water using a bubble generator;

supplying the plurality of bubbles to the mixing region to mix with the algae-containing water;

directing the algae-containing water over and through a plurality of lamella plates, wherein the plurality of lamella plates are disposed downstream of the flotation region and laterally separated from the mixing region by a first wall, the plurality of lamella plates configured to form a laminar flow of water;

redirecting clarified water laterally around a second wall to a lateral region underneath the first inlet and the second inlet, the clarified water having an algae content less than that of the algae-containing water;

redirecting the clarified water upwardly to a weir box configured to maintain a water level in the algae separation chamber.

27 . The method of claim 26 , further comprising skimming separated algae from a surface of the flotation region.

28 . The method of claim 26 , wherein redirecting the clarified water upwardly to the weir box comprises redirecting the clarified water upwardly via at least one of a first riser channel and a second riser channel.

29 . The method of claim 28 , wherein the first riser channel is separated from the mixing region and the flotation region.

30 . The method of claim 28 , wherein the first riser channel and the second riser channel are positioned on opposing sides of the first inlet.

31 . The method of claim 26 , further comprising causing the plurality of bubbles from the gas-containing water to bond to algae particles in the algae-containing water and floating them to a surface in the flotation region.

32 . The method of claim 26 , further comprising supplying the algae-containing water at a flow rate in a range of 50 GPM to 900 GPM.

33 . The method of claim 26 , wherein generating the plurality of bubbles comprises imparting a pressure drop in the gas-containing water with a valve and delivering the gas-containing water to a diffuser, the diffuser distributing the gas-containing water to the mixing region.

34 . A method of separating algae, the method comprising:

supplying algae-containing water to a mixing region of an algae separation chamber of a tank;

supplying gas-containing water comprising dissolved gas to the mixing region of the algae separation chamber;

generating a plurality of bubbles from the gas-containing water; and

supplying the plurality of bubbles and the gas-containing water to the mixing region to mix with the algae-containing water.

35 . The method of claim 34 , further comprising causing the plurality of bubbles from the gas-containing water to bond to algae particles in the algae-containing water and floating them to a surface in a flotation region of the algae separation chamber.

36 . The method of claim 34 , further comprising supplying the algae-containing water at a flow rate in a range of 50 GPM to 900 GPM.

37 . The method of claim 34 , further comprising directing the algae-containing water over and through a plurality of lamella plates.

38 . The method of claim 37 , further comprising redirecting clarified water laterally around a wall to a lateral region underneath a first inlet and a second inlet, the clarified water having an algae content less than that of the algae-containing water.

39 . The method of claim 38 , further comprising redirecting the clarified water upwardly to a weir box.

40 . The method of claim 39 , wherein the weir box is configured to maintain a water level in the algae separation chamber.

41 . The method of claim 39 , wherein redirecting the clarified water upwardly to the weir box comprises redirecting the clarified water upwardly via at least one of a first riser channel and a second riser channel.

42 . The method of claim 41 , wherein the first riser channel is separated from the mixing region.

43 . The method of claim 37 , wherein the plurality of lamella plates are laterally separated from the mixing region by a first wall, the plurality of lamella plates configured to form a laminar flow of water.

44 . The method of claim 34 , wherein generating the plurality of bubbles comprises imparting a pressure drop in the gas-containing water with a valve and delivering the gas-containing water to a diffuser, the diffuser distributing the gas-containing water to the mixing region.

45 . The method of claim 34 , further comprising skimming separated algae from a surface of a flotation region of the algae separation chamber.
