Abstract

Apparatus and methods useful in surveying to provide information rich models. In particular, information not readily or possibly provided by conventional survey techniques can be provided. In some versions targets provide reference for baseline positioning or improving position information otherwise acquired. Scanning may be carried out in multiple locations and merged to form a single image. Machine mounted and hand mounted scanning apparatus is disclosed.

Claims (16)

1 . A method for locating a position within a scanned zone, the method comprising:

scanning the position of a target within the scanned zone;

sending a signal to the target including information regarding the position of the target within the scanned zone.

2 . A method as set forth in claim 1 further comprising displaying at the target the location of the target within the scanned zone based on the signal sent to the target.

3 . A method as set forth in claim 1 wherein the sent signal includes information regarding the location of the target relative to a desired location within the scanned zone.

4 . A method as set forth in claim 3 wherein the desired location corresponds to a location of an object that is beneath a surface of the scanned zone.

5 . A method as set forth in claim 3 wherein the sent signal includes information about a direction of movement needed to co-locate the target with the desired location.

6 . A method as set forth in claim 5 further comprising marking a surface of the scanned zone when the target is co-located with the desired location.

7 . A method of producing a three dimensional scan of land comprising:

imaging the land by illuminating the land with radar at different locations;

receiving radar reflections from the land at the different locations;

creating, using the radar reflections, a three dimensional image of the land;

determining from the radar reflections characteristics of the land in addition to its physical configuration.

8 . A method as set forth in claim 7 wherein determining characteristics of the land includes determining the level of compaction of soil in the land.

9 . A method as set forth in claim 7 wherein determining characteristics of the land includes identifying vegetation on the land.

10 . A method as set forth in claim 9 wherein determining characteristics of the land includes identifying unauthorized access to utilities.
