Abstract

A network device or system can operate to enable a security pass-through with a user equipment (UE) and further define various virtual functions between a physical access point (pAP) and a virtual AP (vAP) based on one or more communication link parameters (e.g., latency). The security pass-through can be an interface connection that passes through a computer premise equipment (CPE) or wireless residential gateway (GW) without the CPE or GW modifying or affecting the data traffic such as by authentication or security protocol. The SP network device can receive traffic data from a UE through or via the security pass-through from a UE of a community Wi-Fi network at a home, residence, or entity network.

Claims (28)

1 . An apparatus, comprising:

one or more processors, coupled to a memory that includes instructions to execute operations of the one or more processors, configured to:

instantiate a first virtual access point (vAP) to provide a first network associated with a physical access point (pAP) of a customer premise equipment (CPE);

determine a configuration of a set of virtual network functions (VNFs) at the first vAP including a first service set identifier (SSID); and

instantiate a second vAP with a second SSID; and

a communication interface, coupled to the one or more processors, configured to receive or transmit communication transmissions over the first SSID and the second SSID.

2 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first vAP is associated with a first security configuration and the second vAP is associated with a second security configuration.

3 . The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the first security configuration is a different security configuration than the second security configuration.

4 . The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the first security configuration follows a different security protocol than the second security configuration.

5 . The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the first security configuration includes one of: Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA), Wi-Fi Protected Access II (WPA2), Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP), WPA-PSK, or WPA-EAP.

6 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the VNFs are provided with at least one partition between a first VNF and a second VFN.

7 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first vAP is associated with a first basic service set (BSS) having a first BSS identifier (BSSID), herein the second vAP is associated with a second BSS having a second BSSID.

8 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first vAP and the second vAP being configured to both execute on the pAP.

9 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein one of the first vAP or the second vAP being configured to provide a community network.

10 . The apparatus of claim 1 , the pAP having a third security configuration that is different than a first security configuration of the vAP.

11 . A method, comprising:

instantiating a first virtual access point (vAP) to provide a first network, the first vAP to execute on a physical access point (pAP);

determining a configuration of a set of virtual network functions (VNFs) for the first vAP including a first service set identifier (SSID) for the first vAP; and

instantiating, on the pAP, a second vAP with a second SSID.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the first vAP is associated with a first security configuration and the second vAP is associated with a second security configuration.

13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the first security configuration is a different security configuration than the second security configuration.

14 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the first security configuration follows a different security protocol than the second security configuration.

15 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the first security configuration includes one of: Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA), Wi-Fi Protected Access II (WPA2), Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP), WPA-PSK, or WPA-EAP.

16 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the VNFs are provided with at least one partition between a first VNF and a second VFN.

17 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the first vAP is associated with a first basic service set (BSS) having a first BSS identifier (BSSID), herein the second vAP is associated with a second BSS having a second BSSID.

18 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the first vAP and the second vAP being configured to both execute on the pAP.

19 . The method of claim 11 , wherein one of the first vAP or the second vAP being configured to provide a community network.

20 . The method of claim 11 , the pAP having a third security configuration that is different than a first security configuration of the vAP.
