Abstract

A method for testing software in an edge building device of a building, the method includes executing, by one or more processors of the edge building device, a first version of the software to perform a first set of one or more processing tasks for the edge building device, and testing, by the one or more processors of the edge building device, a second version of the software configured to perform a second set of one or more processing tasks for the edge building device, testing the second version of the software including: executing the second version of the software together with execution of the first version of the software on the edge building device, and evaluating, by the one or more processors of the edge building device or by causing a separate computing device to perform the evaluation, a performance of the second version of the software.

Claims (61)

1 . A method for testing software in an edge building device of a building, the method comprising:

executing, by one or more processors of the edge building device, a first version of the software to perform a first set of one or more processing tasks for the edge building device;

testing, by the one or more processors of the edge building device, a second version of the software configured to perform a second set of one or more processing tasks for the edge building device by:

executing the second version of the software together with execution of the first version of the software on the edge building device; and

evaluating, by the one or more processors of the edge building device or by causing a separate computing device to perform the evaluation, a performance of the second version of the software on the edge computing device for performing the second set of one or more processing tasks based on an output of the execution of the second version of the software; and

controlling, by the one or more processors, one or more pieces of building equipment of the building according to the first set of one or more processing tasks by executing the first version of the software while simultaneously testing the second version of the software without using the output of the second version of the software to control the one or more pieces of building equipment.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein testing the second version of the software comprises executing the second version of the software without using the output of the execution to control functionality of the edge building device.

3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining, based on the evaluation, that the performance of the second version of the software is above a particular level, the performance of the second version of the software comprising an ability of the software to monitor a sustainability performance of at least a portion of the building; and

responsive to determining the performance of the second version of the software is above the particular level, deactivating the first version of the software and activating the second version of the software to perform the second set of one or more processing tasks for the edge building device, wherein the second set of one or more processing tasks comprises monitoring carbon emissions of at least a portion of the building.

4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining, based on the evaluation, that the performance of the second version of the software is below a particular level, the performance of the second version of the software comprising an ability of the software to monitor a sustainability performance of at least a portion of the building; and

responsive to determining the performance of the second version of the software is below the particular level, determining one or more potential issues impacting the performance.

5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining, based on the evaluation, that the performance of the second version of the software is below a particular level, the performance of the second version of the software comprising an ability of the software to monitor a sustainability performance of at least a portion of the building; and

responsive to determining the performance of the second version of the software is below the particular level, modifying one or more characteristics of the second version of the software at the edge building device to generate a modified second version of the software and retesting the modified second version of the software at the edge building device.

6 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining, based on the evaluation, that the performance of the second version of the software is below a particular level, the performance of the second version of the software comprising an ability of the software to monitor a sustainability performance of at least a portion of the building; and

responsive to determining the performance of the second version of the software is below the particular level, providing data to an external computing device for use in modifying one or more characteristics of the second version of the software to generate a modified second version of the software.

7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the software comprises an edge connector, and at least one of the tasks of the first set of tasks and at least one of the tasks of the second set of tasks comprises allowing the edge building device to interact with one or more other edge building devices.

8 . A system for testing software in an edge building device of a building, the system comprising:

one or more non-transitory computer readable media storing instructions thereon that, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to:

execute a first version of the software to perform a first set of one or more processing tasks for the edge building device;

test a second version of the software configured to perform a second set of one or more processing tasks for the edge building device by:

executing the second version of the software together with execution of the first version of the software on the edge building device; and

evaluating, by the one or more processors of the edge building device or by causing a separate computing device to perform the evaluation, a performance of the second version of the software on the edge computing device for performing the second set of one or more processing tasks based on an output of the execution of the second version of the software; and

control one or more pieces of building equipment of the building according to the first set of one or more processing tasks by executing the first version of the software while simultaneously testing the second version of the software without using the output of the second version of the software to control the one or more pieces of building equipment.

9 . The system of claim 8 , wherein testing the second version of the software comprises executing the second version of the software without using the output of the execution to control functionality of the edge building device.

10 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the instructions further cause the one or more processors to:

determine, based on the evaluation, that the performance of the second version of the software is above a particular level, the performance of the second version of the software comprising an ability of the software to monitor and/or control a sustainability performance of at least a portion of the building; and

responsive to determining the performance of the second version of the software is above the particular level, deactivate the first version of the software and activate the second version of the software to perform the second set of one or more processing tasks for the edge building device, wherein the second set of one or more processing tasks comprises monitoring and/or controlling carbon emissions of at least a portion of the building.

11 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the instructions further cause the one or more processors to:

determine, based on the evaluation, that the performance of the second version of the software is below a particular level, the performance of the second version of the software comprising an ability of the software to monitor a sustainability performance of at least a portion of the building; and

responsive to determining the performance of the second version of the software is below the particular level, determine one or more potential issues impacting the performance.

12 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the instructions further cause the one or more processors to:

determine, based on the evaluation, that the performance of the second version of the software is below a particular level, the performance of the second version of the software comprising an ability of the software to monitor and/or control a sustainability performance of at least a portion of the building; and

responsive to determining the performance of the second version of the software is below the particular level, modify one or more characteristics of the second version of the software at the edge building device to generate a modified second version of the software and retesting the modified second version of the software at the edge building device.

13 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the instructions further cause the one or more processors to:

determine, based on the evaluation, that the performance of the second version of the software is below a particular level, the performance of the second version of the software comprising an ability of the software to monitor and/or control a sustainability performance of at least a portion of the building; and

responsive to determining the performance of the second version of the software is below the particular level, provide data to an external computing device for use in modifying one or more characteristics of the second version of the software to generate a modified second version of the software.

14 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the software comprises an edge connector, and at least one of the tasks of the first set of tasks and at least one of the tasks of the second set of tasks comprises allowing the edge building device to interact with one or more other edge building devices.

15 . One or more non-transitory computer readable storage media storing instructions for testing software in an edge building device of a building thereon that, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:

executing a first version of the software to perform a first set of one or more processing tasks for the edge building device, the first set of one or more processing tasks comprising monitoring and/or controlling a sustainability performance of at least a portion of the building;

testing a second version of the software configured to perform a second set of one or more processing tasks for the edge building device, the second set of one or more processing tasks comprising monitoring and/or controlling a sustainability performance of at least a portion of the building by:

executing the second version of the software together with execution of the first version of the software on the edge building device; and

evaluating, by the one or more processors of the edge building device or by causing a separate computing device to perform the evaluation, a performance of the second version of the software on the edge computing device for performing the second set of one or more processing tasks based on an output of the execution of the second version of the software; and

controlling one or more pieces of building equipment of the building according to the first set of one or more processing tasks by executing the first version of the software while simultaneously testing the second version of the software without using the output of the second version of the software to control the one or more pieces of building equipment.

16 . The one or more non-transitory computer readable storage media of claim 15 , wherein testing the second version of the software comprises executing the second version of the software without using the output of the execution to control functionality of the edge building device.

17 . The one or more non-transitory computer readable storage media of claim 15 , wherein the instructions further cause the processors to perform operations comprising:

determining, based on the evaluation, that the performance of the second version of the software is below a particular level, the performance of the second version of the software comprising an ability to monitor and/or control carbon emissions of at least a portion of the building; and

responsive to determining the performance of the second version of the software is below the particular level, determining one or more potential issues impacting the performance.

18 . The one or more non-transitory computer readable storage media of claim 15 , wherein the instructions further cause the processors to perform operations comprising:

determining, based on the evaluation, that the performance of the second version of the software is below a particular level, the performance of the second version of the software comprising an ability to monitor and/or control carbon emissions of at least a portion of the building; and

responsive to determining the performance of the second version of the software is below the particular level, modifying one or more characteristics of the second version of the software at the edge building device to generate a modified second version of the software and retesting the modified second version of the software at the edge building device.

19 . The one or more non-transitory computer readable storage media of claim 15 , wherein the instructions further cause the processors to perform operations comprising:

determining, based on the evaluation, that the performance of the second version of the software is below a particular level, the performance of the second version of the software comprising an ability to monitor and/or control carbon emissions of at least a portion of the building; and

responsive to determining the performance of the second version of the software is below the particular level, providing data to an external computing device for use in modifying one or more characteristics of the second version of the software to generate a modified second version of the software.

20 . The method of claim 1 , wherein testing the second version of the software further comprises processing input data using the second version of the software without using an output of the second version of the software.

21 . The one or more non-transitory computer readable storage media of claim 15 , wherein the instructions further cause the processors to perform operations comprising:

determining, based on the evaluation, that the performance of the second version of the software is above a particular level, the performance of the second version of the software comprising an ability to monitor and/or control carbon emissions of at least a portion of the building; and

responsive to determining the performance of the second version of the software is above the particular level, deactivating the first version of the software and activating the second version of the software to perform the second set of one or more processing tasks for the edge building device, the second set of one or more processing tasks comprising monitoring and/or controlling carbon emissions of the one or more pieces of building equipment of the building.
