Abstract

Systems and methods for updating advertisements embedded in a media asset scheduled for download at a future time. The media guidance application may receive a request from a user to download a media asset at a future time, where the media asset includes a plurality of embedded advertisements. The media guidance application may determine whether to update an embedded advertisement in the plurality of embedded advertisements. After determining to update the embedded advertisement, the media guidance application may replace the embedded advertisement with an updated advertisement in the media asset.

determine, based on a user profile associated with the device, a time-of-day criteria corresponding to the time-of-day indicated by the user interface input; and

cause a replacement of the at least one embedded advertisement in the downloaded media asset with an at least one updated embedded advertisement in the downloaded media asset, wherein the at least one updated embedded advertisement is retrieved from an online database based on the time-of-day criteria corresponding to the time-of-day indicated by the user interface input.

9 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

cause the device to generate for display a user-selectable option to select the time-of-day at which the user of the device plans to view the media asset; and

in response to receiving the user interface input from the device, store the time-of-day criteria in the user profile associated with the device.

10 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to cause the replacement of the at least one embedded advertisement in the downloaded media asset with the at least one updated embedded advertisement in the downloaded media asset by:

retrieving a candidate advertisement from the online advertising database; and

comparing the candidate advertisement with the time-of-day criteria; and

determining, based on the comparing, whether the candidate advertisement meets the time-of-day criteria.

11 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

in response to determining that the candidate advertisement meets the time-of-day criteria, cause replacement of the at least one embedded advertisement in the downloaded media asset with the candidate advertisement.

12 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to cause the replacement of the at least one embedded advertisement in the downloaded media asset with the at least one updated embedded advertisement in the downloaded media asset by:

retrieving metadata corresponding to the downloaded media asset; and

determining, from the metadata, at least one time point within the downloaded media asset that specifies when the at least one embedded advertisement will be played.

13 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

determine, during playback of the downloaded media asset, that playback has reached a time point that specifies when the at least one embedded advertisement will be played; and

in response to determining that playback has reached the time point, pause playback of the downloaded media asset and starting playback of the at least one updated embedded advertisement.

14 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

based on determining that the playback of the at least one updated embedded advertisement has ended, resume playback of the downloaded media asset from the time point.

15 . A non-transitory computer readable medium having instructions encoded thereon that, when executed by control circuitry, cause the control circuitry to:
