. A bacteria lacking a functional ymgC gene.
. The bacteria of claim 20 , wherein said ymgC gene is deleted.
. The bacteria of claim 20 , wherein said ymgC gene is knocked out.
. The bacteria of claim 20 , wherein said bacteria is E. coli.
. The bacteria of claim 20 , wherein said bacteria produces increased levels of cysteine relative to a bacteria with a functional ymgC gene.
. The bacteria of claim 20 , wherein said bacteria produces increased levels of methionine relative to a bacteria with a functional ymgC gene.
. The bacteria of claim 20 , wherein said bacteria further comprises inactivation of one or more genes that encode polypeptides that degrade cysteine.
