Abstract

A warehouse automation system adapted to improve warehouse operating productivity includes a plurality of carts for transporting products within a warehouse and a controller. The controller is adapted to associate a first one of the plurality of carts with a first person and to control the first cart to lead the first person around the warehouse. According to one advantage, the time the first person spends restocking, picking, counting, sorting, moving, and packing product into customer orders and shipments, for example, is reduced.

Claims (29)

1 . A cart comprising:

a plurality of receptacles for receiving products for transport, at least one of the receptacles of the plurality of receptacles being removable from the cart; and

a plurality of lights associated with the plurality of receptacles, wherein the cart is structured to selectively illuminate one or more of the plurality of lights to provide an indication of at least one receptacle of the plurality of receptacles associated with a task.

The cart of claim 1 , wherein the cart is structured to selectively illuminate the one or more of the plurality of lights to identify a particular receptacle of the plurality of receptacles within which a product is to be placed or from which a product is to be retrieved in association with the task.

3 . The cart of claim 1 , wherein one or more of the plurality of lights is to change color based upon the task.

4 . The cart of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of lights extend substantially along a length of two opposed sides of the cart.

5 . The cart of claim 4 , wherein the cart is structured to selectively illuminate one or more of the plurality of lights associated with each of two opposed faces of a first receptacle of the plurality of receptacles that spans the cart.

6 . The cart of claim 1 , further including at least one sensor to output signals indicating that a corresponding one of the at least one of the removable receptacles is present on the cart.

7 . The cart of claim 1 , further including at least one weight sensor to output signals indicative of products being placed in or removed from a receptacle of the plurality of receptacles.

8 . The cart of claim 1 , further including at least one image sensor to generate image data for detecting changes in a receptacle of the plurality of receptacles.

9 . The cart of claim 1 , further including an action button to enable a user to confirm that an item has been placed in a receptacle of the plurality of receptacles.

10 . The cart of claim 1 , further including at least one processor circuit to cause the cart to automatically move around an area where products are stored and to guide a person to tasks in the area.

11 . The cart of claim 10 , wherein the cart is in communication with a graphical user-interface screen.

12 . The cart of claim 11 , further including the graphical user-interface screen, the graphical user-interface screen to provide an indication of another cart to which the person is to transition.

13 . The cart of claim 12 , wherein the cart is associated with a particular task of the tasks in the area and the indication of the other cart is provided responsive to completion of the particular task.

14 . The cart of claim 13 , wherein the graphical user-interface screen is to provide an indication of a task to which the person is to transition, the task being associated with the other cart.

15 . The cart of claim 14 , wherein the task is associated with a location in the area and the graphical user-interface screen is to present the indication of the task during movement of the cart.

16 . A system comprising:

a plurality of carts, each of the carts including a plurality of receptacles for receiving products for transport, at least one of the receptacles of the plurality of receptacles of each cart being removable from the respective cart, and a plurality of lights associated with the plurality of receptacles of the respective carts;

machine-readable instructions; and

at least one processor circuit to execute the machine-readable instructions to:

associate at least one receptacle of the plurality of receptacles of a first cart of the plurality of carts with a task; and

cause one or more of the plurality of lights of the first cart to be selectively illuminated to provide an indication of the at least one receptacle of the plurality of receptacles of the first cart associated with the task.

The system of claim 16 , wherein the task is associated with an area where products are stored and wherein, responsive to the association of the task with the at least one receptacle of the plurality of receptacles of the first cart, one or more of the at least one processor circuit is to cause the first cart to automatically move around the area.

18 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the task is a first task and, responsive to an indication of completion of the first task, the at least one processor circuit to associate a second task with at least one receptacle of the plurality of receptacles of a second cart of the plurality of carts.

19 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the at least one processor circuit is to cause the one or more of the plurality of lights to be selectively illuminated to identify the at least one receptacle of the plurality of receptacles of the first cart within which a product is to be placed or from which a product is to be retrieved in association with the task.

20 . A method comprising:

associating, by at least one processor circuit programmed by at least one instruction, at least one receptacle of a plurality of receptacles of a cart with a task; and

causing, by one or more of the at least one processor circuit, one or more of a plurality of lights of the cart to be selectively illuminated to provide an indication of the at least one receptacle of the plurality of receptacles associated with the task.
