Abstract

A biodegradable beverage cartridge to be disposed under a ground surface for home compostability contains a biodegradable polymer, a sealing lid system, a protruding lid, and a cartridge body containing an organic material such as coffee, tea, or a flavored brew component. The sealing lid system includes the protruding lid hinged to the cartridge body and a sealing geometry that protrudes about an outer perimeter thereof for a sealing engagement with an upper receiving surface of the cartridge body. The biodegradable beverage cartridge optionally includes a biodegradable polymer or a non-biodegradable polymer. Adaptive beverage cartridge shapes are provided to fit a particular beverage cartridge preparation system.

Claims (16)

1 . A biodegradable and home compostable beverage cartridge to be disposed under a ground surface in contact with water after a use, the biodegradable beverage cartridge comprising:

a cartridge body containing at least one of a coffee, a tea, and a flavored brew component;

a sealing lid system having a protruding lid hinged by a hinge member to the cartridge body and a sealing geometry received in an upper receiving surface of the cartridge body providing a water-tight and an air-tight sealing engagement therewith to seal the biodegradable beverage cartridge before a use;

said cartridge body having a bottom at least a portion of which is flat;

said cartridge body having a flat lip extending from said upper receiving surface away from an axial center of said cartridge body;

said protruding lid having a completing lid lip extending from said protruding lid that aligns with said flat lip of said cartridge body during said water-tight and said air-tight sealing engagement;

said cartridge body having at least one side wall that is tapered relative to said protruding lid;

said cartridge body and said sealing lid system each being a biocomposite comprising a biomatter and a polymer;

the biomatter comprising about 0.01 wt % to about 99.99% wt % of the biocomposite and the polymer comprises about 0.01 wt % to about 99.99 wt % of the biocomposite;

said biomatter formed into a bioplastic composition;

wherein said bioplastic composition is selected from at least one of Spirulina sp, alpha cellulose, glucomannan, powdered wood from Douglas fir, agai, coffee beans, dragon fruit, matcha powder, Chlorella vulgaris, Saccharina latissima , or Ulva sp; and

wherein the polymer comprises at least one of poly (lactic acid) (PLA), polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT), polyethylene oxide (PEO), polycaprolactone (PCL), poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV), lignin, pine gum, bovine serum albumin (BSA), gluten, casein, lactoglobulin, or lysozyme.

2 . The biodegradable and home compostable beverage cartridge, according to claim 1 , wherein:

said bioplastic composition further is constructed from mycelium to decompose said at least one of said coffee, said tea, and said brew component.

3 . The biodegradable and home compostable beverage cartridge, according to claim 1 , wherein:

said bioplastic composition is formed by one of a thermoforming, a heat extruding, a hot-pressing, and an injection molding.
