Abstract

A chiller for cooling a beverage includes a reservoir configured to hold a heat exchange fluid and an evaporator coil arranged within the reservoir. The evaporator coil includes a plurality of windings configured to circulate a coolant, and projections extending from an exterior surface of one or more of the plurality of windings. The chiller further includes a chiller coil arranged in the reservoir, wherein the beverage is configured to flow through the chiller coil. When the coolant is circulated through the plurality of windings of the evaporator coil, a bank of frozen heat exchange fluid forms on the windings and on the projections.

Claims (37)

1 . A chiller for cooling a beverage, comprising:

a reservoir;

a heat exchange fluid stored within the reservoir, wherein the heat exchange fluid is an ionic liquid having a freezing point above 0° C.; and

an evaporator coil arranged within the reservoir, the evaporator coil comprising:

a plurality of windings configured to circulate a coolant,

projections extending from an exterior surface of one or more of the plurality of windings, and

a chiller coil arranged in the reservoir, wherein the beverage flows through the chiller coil,

wherein when the coolant is circulated through the plurality of windings of the evaporator coil, at least a portion of the heat exchange fluid freezes into a solid phase.

2 . The chiller of claim 1 , wherein the freezing point of the ionic liquid is in a range of about 0.01° C. to about 5° C.

3 . The chiller of claim 1 , wherein the ionic liquid is selected from the group of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium based ionic liquids, imidazolium based ionic liquids, pyridinium based ionic liquids, and morpholine based ionic liquids.

4 . The chiller of claim 1 , wherein the ionic liquid comprises a latent heat of fusion in a range of about 200 KJ/kg to about 300 KJ/kg.

5 . The chiller of claim 1 , wherein when the coolant is circulated through the plurality of windings of the evaporator coil, all of the heat exchange fluid freezes into a solid phase.

6 . The chiller of claim 1 , wherein the chiller does not include an agitator for circulating the heat exchange fluid.

7 . The chiller of claim 1 , further comprising a cooling system configured to circulate the coolant, and wherein the cooling system comprises the evaporator coil.

8 . The chiller of claim 7 , further comprising a temperature sensor arranged in the reservoir, wherein the cooling system is configured to stop operation when the heat exchange fluid has frozen as determined based on the temperature detected by the temperature sensor.

9 . The chiller of claim 8 , wherein the temperature sensor is arranged along a central axis of the reservoir.

10 . The chiller of claim 1 , wherein the reservoir is sealed such that the reservoir is inaccessible to an end user.

11 . The chiller of claim 1 , wherein the evaporator coil defines a central volume, and wherein the chiller coil is arranged within the central volume of the evaporator coil.

12 . The chiller of claim 1 , wherein the chiller coil defines a central volume, and wherein the evaporator coil is arranged within the central volume of the chiller coil.

13 . The chiller of claim 1 , wherein the projections comprise one or more fins.

14 . The chiller of claim 1 , wherein the projections comprise one or more rods.

15 . The chiller of claim 1 , wherein the projections comprise a lattice structure.

16 . A beverage dispenser, comprising:

a chiller for cooling a beverage, comprising:

a reservoir;

a heat exchange fluid stored within the reservoir, wherein the heat exchange fluid is an ionic liquid having a freezing point above 0° C.; and

an evaporator coil arranged within the reservoir, the evaporator coil comprising:

a plurality of windings configured to circulate a coolant,

projections extending from an exterior surface of one or more of the plurality of windings, and

a chiller coil arranged in the reservoir, wherein the beverage flows through the chiller coil,

wherein when the coolant is circulated through the plurality of windings of the evaporator coil, at least a portion of the heat exchange fluid freezes into a solid phase;

a user interface configured to receive a beverage selection; and

a dispensing nozzle in communication with the chiller coil for dispensing the beverage.

17 . The beverage dispenser of claim 16 , further comprising a cooling system configured to circulate the coolant, and wherein the cooling system comprises the evaporator coil.

18 . The beverage dispenser of claim 16 , further comprising a carbonator configured to carbonate the beverage, wherein the carbonator is in communication with the chiller coil.

19 . The beverage dispenser of claim 16 , wherein the freezing point of the ionic liquid is in a range of about 0.01° C. to about 5° C.

20 . The beverage dispenser of claim 16 , wherein when the coolant is circulated through the plurality of windings of the evaporator coil, all of the heat exchange fluid freezes into a solid phase.
