Abstract

A drive assembly for driving an imaging catheter has a rotatable fiber and a rotatable drive shaft. The drive assembly includes a fiber optic rotating junction and a motor configured to rotate the rotatable portion of the fiber optic rotating junction. In some embodiments, the drive assembly includes a sensor configured to detect a rotational position of the fiber optic rotating junction and a processor configured to obtain the detected rotational position and stop the motor only when the fiber optic rotating junction is in a predetermined rotational position. In some embodiments, the motor includes a hollow shaft through which at least a portion of the fiber optic rotating junction extends.

Claims (15)

1 . A method of driving an imaging catheter having a rotatable fiber and a rotatable drive shaft, the method comprising:

positioning a distal portion of the imaging catheter in a vessel, wherein the imaging catheter comprises a catheter handle and the catheter handle is connected to a drive assembly comprising a drive assembly housing, the housing having therein a linear slide and a rotary optical drive subassembly, and the rotary optical drive subassembly is connected to a translatable portion of the linear slide;

rotating a rotatable portion of the fiber optic rotating junction with a motor of the drive assembly to rotate both the drive shaft and the rotatable fiber of the imaging catheter;

transmitting light from a light source through the fiber optic rotating junction to the rotatable fiber of the imaging catheter; and

axially translating the translatable portion of the linear slide relative to a stationary portion of the linear slide to axially translate the connected rotary optical drive subassembly, the drive shaft of the imaging catheter, and the rotatable fiber of the imaging catheter so that optical connection between the catheter and the light source is maintained.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising connecting a stationary fiber of the stationary portion of the fiber optic rotating junction in the drive assembly with the light source.

3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising connecting a rotatable fiber of the fiber optic rotating junction with the drive shaft and the rotatable fiber of the imaging catheter.

4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising sensing a position of the fiber optic rotating junction and stopping the motor based upon the sensed position only when the fiber optic rotating junction is in a predetermined rotational position.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein axially translating comprises axially translation with the motor of the drive assembly.

6 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising deflecting a cutter on the imaging catheter during the axially translating step.

7 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising packing tissue into a nosecone of the imaging catheter during the axially translating step.

8 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising locking a handle of the imaging catheter into the drive assembly.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the locking mechanism includes mechanical features to physically align the catheter handle with respect to the drive assembly.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the drive assembly has a total weight of less than 2 pounds.

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the housing is less than 75 cubic inches in volume, and wherein the drive assembly has a total weight of less than 2 pounds.
