Abstract

Described herein are features for a high altitude lighter-than-air (LTA) system and associated methods. A zero-pressure balloon (ZPB) is attached in tandem with one or more air super-pressure balloons (SPB). The ZPB provides lift for the system while the SPB may provide a variable amount of ballast air by pumping in or expelling out ambient air. Various advanced performance targets relating to ascent rate, descent rate, range and maximum altitude are achievable with various scaled versions of the basic design of the LTA system. Advanced navigation and control techniques, such as more efficient high altitude station-keeping approaches, made possible with the LTA system are also described.

Claims (27)

1 . (canceled)

2 . A method of controlling a lighter than air (LTA) system, comprising:

delivering a LTA gas to a first balloon to provide an upward lifting force to the LTA system;

ascending a payload using the first balloon to a first altitude over 70,000 feet; and

controllably releasing ambient air from a second balloon, wherein releasing the ambient air from the second balloon ascends the payload to a second altitude over 70,000 feet.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the first balloon is a zero pressure balloon and the second balloon is a super pressure balloon.

4 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising deploying a parafoil and descending the parafoil toward the ground with the payload.

5 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising receiving ambient air into the second balloon, wherein receiving the ambient air into the second balloon descends the payload to a third altitude less than the second altitude.

6 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the LTA system comprises a valve configured to controllably release the ambient air from the second balloon.

7 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the LTA gas is helium or hydrogen.

8 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the second balloon is coupled to the first balloon by a rotatable actuator.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the rotatable actuator is configured to rotate about more than one axis.

10 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising controllably releasing ambient air from a third balloon, wherein releasing the ambient air from the third balloon ascends the payload to a third altitude.

11 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the second balloon is positioned between the first balloon and the payload.

12 . A method of controlling a lighter than air (LTA) system, comprising:

delivering a LTA gas to a first balloon to provide an upward lifting force to the LTA system;

ascending a payload using the first balloon to a first altitude over 70,000 feet; and

receiving ambient air into a second balloon, wherein receiving the ambient air into the second balloon descends the payload to a second altitude less than the first altitude.

13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the first balloon is a zero pressure balloon and the second balloon is a super pressure balloon.

14 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising deploying a parafoil and descending the parafoil toward the ground with the payload.

15 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising controllably releasing ambient air from the second balloon, wherein releasing the ambient air from the second balloon ascends the payload to a third altitude greater than the second altitude.

16 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the LTA system comprises a compressor configured to deliver ambient air into the second balloon.

17 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the LTA gas is helium or hydrogen.

18 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the second balloon is coupled to the first balloon by a rotatable actuator.

19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein the rotatable actuator is configured to rotate about more than one axis.

20 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising receiving ambient air into a third balloon, wherein receiving the ambient air into the third balloon descends the payload to a third altitude.

21 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the second balloon is positioned between the first balloon and the payload.
