Abstract

A projection system for projecting sewing patterns onto a surface comprises a vertical beam, a projector, and a cart. The vertical beam includes (a) a floor engaging portion at a bottom end and (b) a ceiling engaging portion at a top end, the ceiling engaging portion being vertically movable with respect to the floor engaging portion such that, when in use, the floor engaging portion and the ceiling engaging portion engage a floor and a ceiling, respectively, to anchor the projection system adjacent the surface. The projector is configured to receive data representing the sewing patterns and to project the sewing patterns. The cart is operably attached to the projector and slidably attached to the vertical beam, wherein sliding the cart vertically adjusts a height of the projector above the surface.

20 . A projection system for projecting patterns onto a horizontal surface, comprising:

a projector mounting mechanism;

a physical calibration guide having physical optical calibration features, the physical calibration guide being disposed on the horizontal surface;

a projector configured to receive data representing a calibration pattern having projectable optical calibration features and to project the calibration pattern, the projector being attached to the projector mounting mechanism and retained in a position vertically above the physical calibration guide and aligned to project the calibration pattern onto the physical calibration guide; and

a controller in communication with the projector, the controller being configured to adjust a scale and skew of the projected calibration pattern to obtain a best match of the projectable optical calibration features to the physical optical calibration features of the physical calibration guide.

21 . The projection system of claim 20 , wherein the projector is configured to receive data representing sewing patterns and to project the sewing patterns upon fabric disposed vertically below the projector on the horizontal surface.

The projection system of claim 20 , wherein the projector mounting mechanism is selected from the group comprising a ceiling fixture, a floor stand, a tension pole, a table clamp clamped to a table including the horizontal surface, a table top stand disposed on the horizontal surface, and a wall mount.

23 . The projection system of claim 20 further comprising a camera disposed in or adjacent the projector and configured to receive an image of the calibration pattern as projected onto the calibration guide;

wherein the controller is configured to adjust a scale and skew of the projected calibration pattern based on an image of the projected calibration pattern as projected onto the calibration guide and as captured by the camera.

24 . The projection system of claim 20 , wherein the controller is further configured to

receive an image including the physical optical calibration features and projected optical calibration features; determine a camera transform from the projected optical calibration features in the camera image;

apply an inverse transform of the camera transform to the second optical calibration features in the camera image to obtain inverse projected optical calibration features; and

determine a projector transform from the inverse projected optical calibration features.

25 . The projection system of claim 20 , wherein the controller comprises a mobile device.

26 . A projection system for projecting patterns onto a horizontal surface, comprising:

a projector mounting mechanism;

a physical calibration guide having physical optical calibration features, the physical calibration guide being disposed on the horizontal surface;

a projector configured to receive data representing a calibration pattern having projectable optical calibration features and to project the calibration pattern, the projector being attached to the projector mounting mechanism and retained in a position vertically above the physical calibration guide and aligned to project the calibration pattern onto the physical calibration guide; and

a controller comprising a mobile device including a camera in communication with the projector, the controller being configured to adjust a scale and skew of the projected calibration pattern to obtain a best match of the projectable optical calibration features to the physical optical calibration features of the physical calibration guide;

wherein the controller is further configured to obtain an image including the physical optical calibration features and projected optical calibration features; determine a camera transform from the projected optical calibration features in the camera image; apply an inverse transform of the camera transform to the second optical calibration features in the camera image to obtain inverse projected optical calibration features; and determine a projector transform from the inverse projected optical calibration features.

27 . The projection system of claim 26 , wherein the projector is configured to receive data representing sewing patterns and to project the sewing patterns upon fabric disposed vertically below the projector on the horizontal surface.

The projection system of claim 26 , wherein the projector mounting mechanism is selected from the group comprising a ceiling fixture, a floor stand, a tension pole, a table clamp clamped to a table including the horizontal surface, a table top stand disposed on the horizontal surface, and a wall mount.
