Abstract

A blast attenuation device for a gun tube. The blast attenuation device has a first wall section which defines a first chamber, which extends from an inlet end having an inlet aperture to an outlet end having an outlet aperture. The blast attenuation device also has a second wall section which defines a second chamber, which extends from an inlet end having an inlet aperture to an outlet end having an outlet aperture.

Claims (27)

1 . A blast attenuation device for a gun tube, the blast attenuation device having a longitudinal axis and comprising:

a first wall section which defines a first chamber, the first chamber extending from an inlet end having an inlet aperture to an outlet end having an outlet aperture coaxial with the longitudinal axis, the first wall section having a continuous uninterrupted constant internal diameter between the inlet aperture of the first chamber and the outlet aperture of the first chamber;

a second wall section which defines a second chamber, the second chamber extending from an inlet end having an inlet aperture to an outlet end having an outlet aperture being coaxial with the longitudinal axis; and the second wall section has a continuous uninterrupted constant internal diameter between the inlet aperture of the second chamber and the outlet aperture of the second chamber, the second wall section being spaced apart from the first wall section to define a flow passage between the first wall section and second wall section, the first wall section and second wall section defining a first region of a bore of the blast attenuation device, the first wall section and the second wall section being coaxial with the longitudinal axis; and

a support hub defining a second region of the bore of the blast attenuation device, the support hub having an inlet end having an inlet aperture and an outlet end having an outlet aperture, wherein the outlet end of the support hub extends to/from the inlet end of the first wall section, the support hub being coaxial with the longitudinal axis,

wherein a portion of the first chamber is between the outlet aperture of the support hub and the inlet aperture of the second chamber, such that gas flow through the flow passage between the first wall section and the second wall section forms an outer gas flow region, gas flow through the second wall section outlet aperture forms a central gas flow region, and the outer gas flow region bounds the central gas flow region at the outlet aperture of the second chamber.

2 . The blast attenuation device of claim 1 , wherein a flow area of the flow passage is greater than a flow area of the outlet aperture of the second wall section.

3 . The blast attenuation device of claim 1 , wherein the second wall section is located in the outlet aperture of the first wall section, such that the first wall section inlet aperture, second wall section inlet aperture, first wall section outlet aperture, and second wall section outlet aperture are provided in series along the longitudinal axis.

4 . The blast attenuation device of claim 1 , wherein the first region of the bore and the second region of the bore are integrally formed.

5 . The blast attenuation device of claim 1 , wherein the support hub has a constant internal diameter along an entire length of the support hub.

6 . A blast attenuation device for a gun tube, the blast attenuation device having a longitudinal axis and comprising:

an outer sleeve defining a first chamber extending from an inlet aperture of the outer sleeve to an outlet aperture of the outer sleeve;

an inner sleeve defining a second chamber extending from an inlet aperture to an outlet aperture, the outer sleeve and the inner sleeve defining a first region of a bore of the blast attenuation device, the outer sleeve and the inner sleeve being coaxial with the longitudinal axis; and

a support hub defining a second region of the bore of the blast attenuation device, the support hub having an inlet end having an inlet aperture and an outlet end having an outlet aperture, wherein the outlet end of the support hub extends to/from the inlet aperture of the outer sleeve, the support hub being coaxial with the longitudinal axis,

wherein the inner sleeve is spaced apart from the outer sleeve, the space defining a flow passage between the inner sleeve and the outer sleeve;

wherein the outer sleeve has a continuous uninterrupted constant internal diameter from the inlet aperture of the outer sleeve to the outlet aperture of the outer sleeve;

wherein the inner sleeve has a continuous uninterrupted constant internal diameter from the inlet aperture of the inner sleeve to the outlet aperture of the inner sleeve; and

wherein a portion of the first chamber is between the outlet aperture of the support hub and the inlet aperture of the second chamber.

7 . The blast attenuation device of claim 6 , wherein the outer sleeve, the inner sleeve, and the support hub are integrally formed.

8 . The blast attenuation device of claim 6 , wherein a flow area of the flow passage is greater than a flow area of the outlet aperture of the inner sleeve.

9 . The blast attenuation device of claim 6 , wherein the flow passage is annular.

10 . The blast attenuation device of claim 6 , further comprising a support member extending between the outer sleeve and the inner sleeve.

11 . A blast attenuation device for a gun tube, the blast attenuation device having a longitudinal axis and comprising:

a first wall section which defines a first chamber, which extends from an inlet end having an inlet aperture to an outlet end having an outlet aperture coaxial with the longitudinal axis, the first wall section having a continuous uninterrupted constant internal diameter between the inlet aperture of the first chamber and the outlet aperture of the first chamber;

a second wall section which defines a second chamber, which extends from an inlet end having an inlet aperture to an outlet end having an outlet aperture being coaxial with the longitudinal axis; and the second wall section has a continuous uninterrupted constant internal diameter between the inlet aperture of the second chamber and the outlet aperture of the second chamber, the second wall section being spaced apart from the first wall section to define a flow passage between the first wall section and second wall section, the second wall section being located in the outlet aperture of the first wall section, the first wall section and second wall section defining a first region of a bore of the blast attenuation device, the first wall section and the second wall section being coaxial with the longitudinal axis, such that the first wall section inlet aperture, second wall section inlet aperture, first wall section outlet aperture, and second wall section outlet aperture are provided in series along the longitudinal axis; and

a support hub defining a second region of the bore of the blast attenuation device, the support hub having an inlet end having an inlet aperture and an outlet end having an outlet aperture, wherein the outlet end of the support hub extends to/from the inlet end of the first wall section, the support hub being coaxial with the longitudinal axis,

wherein a portion of the first chamber is between the outlet aperture of the support hub and the inlet aperture of the second chamber, and

wherein a flow area of the flow passage is greater than a flow area of the outlet aperture of the first wall section such that in operation, gas flow through the flow passage forms an outer gas flow region, and gas flow through the second wall section outlet aperture forms a central gas flow region, and gas in the outer flow region is at a lower pressure than gas in the central gas flow region.
