Abstract

Apparatuses and methods for extracting desired chemical species including, without limitation, lithium, specific lithium species, and/or other chemical compounds from input flows in a modular unit. The input flows may be raw materials in which lithium metal and/or lithium species are dissolved and/or extracted. The apparatuses and methods may include daisy chain flow through separate tanks, a column array, and/or combinations thereof.

Claims (31)

1 . A modular extraction system, comprising:

at least one tank;

one or more valves for selectively directing a brine input stream and a second stream to the at least one tank;

an amount of sorbent material contained within the at least one tank, in which the sorbent material extracts at least one constituent from the brine input stream; and

a concentration membrane for processing the extracted at least one constituent in the second stream into at least one output stream,

an wherein the at least one tank and the concentration membrane are sized such that the modular extraction system is mobile, and

an wherein the at least one tank is configured to maintain a substantially sharp concentration profile between the brine input stream and the second stream that is presented to the sorbent material and travels along at least a portion of a length of the at least one tank.

2 . The modular extraction system of claim 1 , wherein the second stream comprises a stripping solution configured to remove the at least one constituent from the sorbent material.

3 . The modular extraction system of claim 1 , wherein the second stream comprises water or water containing metal salts.

4 . The modular extraction system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tank is sized such that a substantially constant pressure is maintained within the at least one tank.

5 . The modular extraction system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tank is sized such that the substantially sharp concentration profile between the brine input stream and the second stream.

6 . The modular extraction system of claim 1 , wherein the concentration membrane is configured to receive a bed volume of the second stream and concentrate an amount of the sorbent material contained in the bed volume of the second stream.

7 . The modular extraction system of claim 1 , wherein the sorbent material is at least one of lithium aluminate, aluminum-based materials, aluminum-oxygen based materials, manganese, manganese oxides, gallium-based materials, cobalt oxides, transition metal oxides, transition metal sulfides, transition metal phosphates, aluminum phosphates, gallium phosphates, antimony oxides, antimony phosphates, tin oxides, tin phosphates, silicon-based materials, germanium-based materials, transition metal silicates, aluminum-gallium silicates, germanium, tin, antimony silicates, sulfides, titanates, indiumates, indium tin oxides, mixed transition metal oxides, phosphates, organophosphates, polymers containing organophosphates, polyethers, ion-exchange resins, bohemite-based materials, aluminum-oxyhydroxides, activated alumina, or a combination thereof.

8 . The modular extraction system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one tank comprises a first tank and a second tank and the second tank receives a flow of the brine input stream while the first tank receives a flow of the second stream.

9 . The modular extraction system of claim 8 , wherein the one or more valves sequentially deliver the brine input stream to the first tank and then the second tank and sequentially deliver the second stream to the first tank and the second tank while maintaining the substantially sharp concentration profile between the brine input stream and the second stream in at least one of the first tank and the second tank.

10 . The modular extraction system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one constituent is lithium.

11 . A method comprising:

accessing a brine input stream and a second stream;

selectively directing the brine input stream to at least one tank of a modular extraction system;

extracting, by a sorbent material contained within the at least one tank, a constituent from the brine input stream;

selectively directing the second stream through at least a portion of a length of the at least one tank to expose the second stream to the sorbent material, wherein the tank is configured to provide a substantially sharp concentration profile between the brine input stream and the second stream that is flowed through the at least a portion of the length of the at least one tank and the second stream is configured to strip the constituent from the sorbent material; and

processing, by a concentration membrane of the modular extraction system, the extracted constituent into an output stream, wherein the tank and the concentration membrane are sized such that the modular extraction system is mobile.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the second stream comprises water.

13 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the at least one tank is sized such that a substantially constant pressure is maintained within the at least one tank.

14 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the at least one tank is sized such that the at least one tank creates the substantially sharp concentration profile between the brine input stream and the second stream.

15 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising providing a bed volume of the second stream to the concentration membrane, wherein the concentration membrane is configured to concentrate an amount of the sorbent material contained in the bed volume of the second stream.

16 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the sorbent material is at least one of lithium aluminate, aluminum-based materials, aluminum-oxygen based materials, manganese, manganese oxides, gallium-based materials, cobalt oxides, transition metal oxides, transition metal sulfides, transition metal phosphates, aluminum phosphates, gallium phosphates, antimony oxides, antimony phosphates, tin oxides, tin phosphates, silicon-based materials, germanium-based materials, transition metal silicates, aluminum-gallium silicates, germanium, tin, antimony silicates, sulfides, titanates, indiumates, indium tin oxides, mixed transition metal oxides, phosphates, organophosphates, polymers containing organophosphates, polyethers, ion-exchange resins, bohemite-based materials, aluminum-oxyhydroxides, activated alumina, or a combination thereof.

17 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the at least one tank comprises a first tank and a second tank and the second tank receives a flow of the brine input stream while the first tank receives a flow of the second stream.

18 . The method of claim 17 , further comprising sequentially delivering the brine input stream to the first tank and then the second tank and sequentially delivering the second stream to the first tank and the second tank while maintaining the substantially sharp concentration profile between the brine input stream and the second stream in at least one of the first tank and the second tank.
