Abstract

A graphite purification system contains a vessel adapted to contain graphite particles, including an inductive coil for heating said vessel; and a cooling system for cooling said graphite purification system, whereby the cooling system is adapted to also cool the graphite particles. The purification system may be a continuous or batch system, and, the vessel may be at least partially formed from graphite. A process for purifying graphite particles is also presented and includes providing a vessel formed at least partially from graphite; loading graphite particles into the vessel; inductively heating at least a portion of the vessel, and thereby heating the graphite particles in physical contact with the vessel; and cooling the vessel and the graphite particles.

Claims (43)

1 . A furnace for purifying graphite, the furnace comprising:

a top end;

a bottom end;

a graphite feed tube vertically disposed between the top end and the bottom end,

the graphite feed tube comprising an interior plenum through which a material flows;

an inductive coil disposed around a first portion of the graphite feed tube,

the inductive coil being configured to heat the first portion of the graphite feed tube to a temperature between 450 C and 2200 C to remove impurities from the material; and

an exhaust tube in fluid connection with the graphite feed tube for exhausting the impurities from the graphite feed tube.

2 . The furnace of claim 1 , wherein the inductive coil is configured to heat the first portion of the graphite feed tube to a temperature between 1700 C and 2200 C.

3 . The furnace of claim 1 , wherein the inductive coil is configured to heat the first portion of the graphite feed tube to a temperature between 450 C and 550 C.

4 . The furnace of claim 1 further comprising an insulating material disposed on the first portion of the graphite feed tube.

5 . The furnace of claim 1 further comprising an inline mixer disposed within the interior plenum of the graphite feed tube.

6 . The furnace of claim 5 , wherein the inline mixer is formed from graphite and is configured to enhance an inductive heat applied to the first portion of the graphite feed tube.

7 . The furnace of claim 1 , wherein a second portion the graphite feed tube is devoid of the inductive coil.

8 . The furnace of claim 7 further comprising a plurality of fins disposed on the second portion of the graphite feed tube for radially cooling the second portion of the graphite feed tube.

9 . The furnace of claim 8 , wherein the second portion of the graphite feed tube is a bottom portion, and wherein the bottom portion is actively cooled.

10 . A system for purifying graphite, the system comprising:

a furnace, comprising:

a top end;

a bottom end;

a graphite feed tube vertically disposed between the top end and the bottom end,

the graphite feed tube being configured to convey a material through the furnace, and

the graphite feed tube comprising at least one heated portion and at least one non-heated portion;

an inductive coil disposed around the heated portion of the graphite feed tube,

the inductive coil being configured to heat the heated portion of the graphite feed tube to a temperature between 450 C and 2200 C; and

a cooling system in fluid connection with the furnace, the cooling system being configured to cool the material as the material exits the furnace.

11 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the cooling system comprises a temperature controller.

12 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the cooling system comprises a cooling jacket.

13 . The system of claim 12 , wherein a coolant selectively flows through the cooling jacket.

14 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the material is graphite.

15 . The system of claim 10 , further comprising an exhaust tube in fluid connection with the graphite feed tube for exhausting impurities from the material as the material flows through the heated portion of the graphite feed tube.

16 . The system of claim 10 , wherein a mass flow rate through the system is at least 5 kilograms per hour.

17 . A method of purifying graphite, the method comprising:

providing a furnace, the furnace comprising a top end and a bottom end;

providing a graphite feed tube vertically disposed between the top end and the bottom end,

the graphite feed tube comprising an interior plenum through which graphite particles flow;

inductively heating a first portion of the graphite feed tube to a temperature between 450 C and 2200 C to remove impurities from the material; and

providing an exhaust tube in fluid connection with the graphite feed tube to exhaust the impurities from the graphite feed tube.

18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the first portion of the graphite feed tube is inductively heated to a temperature between 1700 C and 2200 C.

19 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the first portion of the graphite feed tube is inductively heated to a temperature between 450 C and 550 C.

20 . The method of claim 17 , further comprising:

positioning a graphite mixer in the interior plenum; and

conveying the graphite particles through the interior plenum using the graphite mixer.
