Abstract

A medical device for performing a surgical procedure may include an elongate member having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending therebetween. The medical device may also include a handle connected to the proximal end of the elongate member, an end effector assembly connected to the distal end of the elongate member, and a cutting device configured to extend from the end effector assembly, wherein the cutting device has a retracted configuration in which the cutting device is withdrawin into the end effector assembly and a deployed configuration in which the cutting device extends from the end effector assembly.

Claims (29)

1 . A medical device comprising:

an outer cup;

an inner cup partially located within the outer cup; and

a cutting device located between the outer cup and the inner cup, the cutting device having a distal portion.

2 . The medical device of claim 1 , wherein in a retracted configuration the distal portion is disposed between the outer and inner cups without projecting distally beyond either of the outer cup or the inner cup, and wherein in a deployed configuration the distal portion extends distally beyond the outer cup and the inner cup.

3 . The medical device of claim 2 , wherein the outer cup includes an edge and a distal end of the cutting device extends beyond the outer cup edge.

4 . The medical device of claim 2 , wherein the cutting device is configured to move between a first position and a second position along a longitudinal axis of the medical device.

5 . The medical device of claim 4 , comprising a tab extending from the cutting device to a circular member such that the tab couples the cutting device to the circular member, wherein the circular member is operable to extend the cutting device from the first position to the second position.

6 . The medical device of claim 2 , the cutting device rotates about a longitudinal axis with respect to the outer cup.

7 . The medical device of claim 2 , wherein the cutting device is monopolar.

8 . The medical device of claim 2 , wherein the cutting device includes an electrically resistive coating.

9 . A method for performing a laparoscopic hysterectomy procedure, the method comprising:

inserting a medical device into a vaginal canal of a patient, the medical device comprising:

an outer cup;

an inner cup partially located within the outer cup; and

a cutting device located between the outer cup and the inner cup, the cutting device having a distal portion;

positioning the outer cup and the inner cup to be adjacent tissue associated with one of uterine or cervical tissues;

deploying the cutting device; and

creating an incision to excise at least a part of a uterus of the patient from surrounding tissue.

10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the medical device includes an elongate manipulation member extending distally from within the outer cup and the inner cup, and before deploying the cutting device, the method further includes pivoting the elongate manipulation member to alter a positioning of the uterus.

11 . The method of claim 9 , wherein, before deploying the cutting device, the method further includes positioning a rim of the outer cup and the inner cup against a vaginal fornice and exerting a cephalad force on the vaginal fornice.

12 . The method of claim 9 wherein creating an incision to separate at least a uterus of the patient from surrounding tissue includes rotating the cutting device.

13 . The method of claim 9 , wherein rotating the cutting device includes rotating the outer cup.

14 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the cutting device is a monopolar cautery instrument.

15 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the cutting device is a bipolar cautery instrument.

16 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the cup is removably secured to a distal end of an elongate member.

17 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the outer cup and the inner cup is longitudinally moveable relative to a distal end of an elongate member.

18 . The method of claim 9 , further comprising removing cervical tissue.

19 . The method of claim 9 , wherein creating an incision to excise at least a uterus of the patient from surrounding tissue includes excising the uterus and a cervix of the patient.
