Abstract

Methods and systems are provided for latency-oriented router. An incoming packet is received on a first interface. The type of the incoming packet is determined. Upon the detection that the incoming packet belongs to latency-critical traffic, the incoming packet is duplicated into one or more copies. Subsequently, the duplicated copies are sent to a second interface in a delayed fashion where the duplicated copies are spread over a time period. The duplicated copies are received and processed at the second interface.

Claims (37)

239 . A method of managing latency critical network traffic, the method comprising:

receiving, by a computing device via a first set of one or more interfaces, a plurality of packets from one or more source devices;

determining, by the computing device, that the plurality of packets comprise latency-critical packets and non-critical packets;

obtaining, by the computing device, an expected time associated with the next latency-critical packet;

suppressing, by the computing device, transmission of one or more non-critical packets received from the one or more source devices via a second set of one or more interfaces based on the expected time associated with the next latency-critical packet; and

transmitting, by the computing device, one or more latency-critical packets to a client device via the second set of one or more interfaces, the one or more latency-critical packets including the next latency-critical packet.

240 . The method of claim 239 , the method further comprising:

transmitting, by the computing device, the one or more non-critical packets to the client device via the second set of one or more interfaces after transmitting the one or more latency-critical packets to the client device via the second set of one or more interfaces.

241 . The method of claim 239 , wherein obtaining the expected time associated with the next latency-critical packet comprises using, by the computing device, a delay calculated based on an expected packet rate or a detected packet rate and a last packet received.

242 . The method of claim 239 , wherein obtaining the expected time associated with the next latency-critical packet comprises using, by the computing device, a synchronization technique, wherein the synchronization technique comprises a phase-locked loop or a delay-locked loop.

243 . The method of claim 239 , wherein obtaining the expected time associated with the next latency-critical packet comprises using, by the computing device, estimates associated with one or more prior latency-critical sessions.

244 . The method of claim 239 , wherein suppressing transmission of the one or more non-critical packets based on the expected time associated with the next latency-critical packet comprises stopping, by the computing device, transmission of the one or more non-critical packets at a predefined time interval prior to the expected time associated with the next latency-critical packet.

245 . The method of claim 244 , wherein the predefined time interval is based on the size of the next latency-critical packet.

246 . The method of claim 239 , wherein suppressing transmission of the one or more non-critical packets comprises stopping, by the computing device, processing of non-critical packets.

247 . The method of claim 239 , wherein suppressing transmission of the one or more non-critical packets comprises dropping, by the computing device, the one or more non-critical packets.

248 . The method of claim 239 , wherein suppressing transmission of the one or more non-critical packets comprises delaying, by the computing device, transmission of the one or more non-critical packets via the second set of one or more interfaces with respect to the one or more latency-critical packets.

249 . The method of claim 248 , the method further comprising placing, by the computing device, the delayed one or more non-critical packets in a separate queue until the one or more latency-critical packets are passed to the second set of one or more interfaces.

250 . A computing device comprising:

a first set of one or more interfaces and a second set of one or more interfaces; and

a processor configured to:

receive a plurality of packets from one or more source devices via the first set of one or more interfaces;

determine that the plurality of packets comprise latency-critical packets and non-critical packets;

obtain an expected time associated with the next latency-critical packet;

suppress transmission of one or more non-critical packets received from the one or more source devices via a second set of one or more interfaces based on the expected time associated with the next latency-critical packet; and

transmit one or more latency-critical packets to a client device via the second set of one or more interfaces, the one or more latency-critical packets including the next latency-critical packet.

251 . The computing device of claim 250 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

transmit the one or more non-critical packets to the client device via the second set of one or more interfaces after transmitting the one or more latency-critical packets to the client device via the second set of one or more interfaces.

252 . The computing device of claim 250 , wherein to obtain the expected time associated with the next latency-critical packet, the processor is configured to use a delay calculated based on an expected packet rate or a detected packet rate and a last packet received.

253 . The computing device of claim 250 , wherein to obtain the expected time associated with the next latency-critical packet, the processor is configured to use a synchronization technique, wherein the synchronization technique comprises a phase-locked loop or a delay-locked loop.

254 . The computing device of claim 250 , wherein to obtain the expected time associated with the next latency-critical packet, the processor is configured to use estimates associated with one or more prior latency-critical sessions.

255 . The computing device of claim 250 , wherein to suppress transmission of the one or more non-critical packets based on the expected time associated with the next latency-critical packet, the processor is configured to stop transmission of the one or more non-critical packets at a predefined time interval prior to the expected time associated with the next latency-critical packet.

256 . The computing device of claim 255 , wherein the predefined time interval is based on the size of the next latency-critical packet.

257 . The computing device of claim 250 , wherein to suppress transmission of the one or more non-critical packets, the processor is further configured to stop processing of non-critical packets.

258 . The computing device of claim 250 , wherein to suppress transmission of the one or more non-critical packets, the processor is further configured to drop the one or more non-critical packets.

259 . The computing device of claim 250 , wherein to suppress transmission of the one or more non-critical packets, the processor is further configured to delay transmission of the one or more non-critical packets via the second set of one or more interfaces with respect to the one or more latency-critical packets.

260 . The computing device of claim 259 , wherein the processor is further configured to place the delayed one or more non-critical packets in a separate queue until the one or more latency-critical packets are passed to the second set of one or more interfaces.
