Abstract

Docking platforms formed in one of the largest-surface-area surfaces of mobile electronic devices. Such a docking platform may comprise a docking accessory cavity having a docking connection system comprising one or more docking connectors formed within the cavity, and optionally two or more electrical contacts within the cavity, the contacts electrically connected to electronics within the electronic device and constructed and arranged to allow electrical connection to detachable docking accessories. The docking connection system is operable to form detachable attachments to multiple independent docking accessories simultaneously. The cavities of the docking platforms are shaped to accommodate a broad range of docking accessories that are specially adapted to sit in a generally flush manner with the back surface of the mobile electronic device while attached to the docking connectors. One type of accessory forms an assembly with an expandable accordion attached to the docking platform.

Claims (33)

1. A detachable docking accessory for a mobile electronic device, the detachable docking accessory comprising:

an accessory body;

an LED light within the accessory body,

a docking connector portion configured to form a detachable magnetic attachment to the mobile electronic device, wherein the docking connector portion magnetically secures the docking accessory to the mobile electronic device.

2. The docking accessory of claim 1 , wherein the docking connector portion is configured to detachably attach to a docking platform integrally formed with a back surface of a mobile electronic device.

3. The docking accessory of claim 2 , wherein the docking connector portion is configured to magnetically attach to the docking platform of the mobile electronic device using at least one magnetic element of the docking platform.

4. The docking accessory of claim 3 , wherein the docking connector portion is configured to magnetically attach to the docking platform using a plurality of magnets of the docking platform.

5. The docking accessory of claim 3 , wherein the docking connector portion is configured to magnetically attach to the docking platform where the at least one magnetic element of the docking platform is formed in an annular shape beneath the back surface of the mobile electronic device.

6. The docking accessory of claim 5 , wherein the docking connector portion is generally circular.

7. The docking accessory of claim 6 , wherein the docking connector portion comprises a magnetic element.

8. The docking accessory of claim 7 , wherein the docking accessory provides illumination for a camera of the mobile electronic device at least during an image capture event of the camera.

9. The docking accessory of claim 7 , wherein the docking accessory comprises an array of LED lights.

10. The docking accessory of claim 9 , wherein the array of LED lights is an annular array of LED lights.

11. The docking accessory of claim 9 , wherein the docking connector portion is configured to extend the docking accessory away from a back surface of the mobile electronic device.

12. The docking accessory of claim 9 , wherein the docking accessory is positionable in at least an extended state and a collapsed state.

13. The docking accessory of claim 12 , wherein the collapsed state corresponds to the LED light being positioned flat against the back surface of the mobile electronic device.

14. The docking accessory of claim 12 , wherein the extended state corresponds to the LED light being positioned away from the back surface of the mobile electronic device.

15. The docking accessory of claim 12 , wherein the accessory body is further positionable at an angle, relative to the back surface of the mobile electronic device, in a partially extended state between the collapsed state and the extended state.

16. The docking accessory of claim 1 , wherein the docking connector portion is configured to detachably attach to a docking platform integrally formed with a mobile electronic device, wherein the docking platform comprises at least one magnetic element for detachably attaching compatible docking accessories.

17. The docking accessory of claim 16 , wherein the docking connector portion is configured to detachably attach to the docking platform of the mobile electronic device, wherein the mobile electronic device is configured to form a detachable attachment to docking accessories operable to wirelessly transmit power with the mobile electronic device.

18. The docking accessory of claim 17 , wherein the docking connector portion is configured to detachably attach to the docking platform of the mobile electronic device, wherein the mobile electronic device is configured to determine if a wireless power accessory is physically docked, and to attempt to establish an authenticated communication link with the wireless power accessory at least partly in response to the mobile electronic device determining that the wireless power accessory is physically docked.

19. The docking accessory of claim 18 , wherein the docking connector portion is configured to magnetically attach to the docking platform using a plurality of magnets of the docking platform.

20. The docking accessory of claim 18 , wherein the docking connector portion is configured to magnetically attach to the docking platform where the at least one magnetic element of the docking platform is formed in an annular shape beneath the back surface of the mobile electronic device.

21. The docking accessory of claim 20 , wherein the docking connector portion is generally circular.

22. The docking accessory of claim 21 , wherein the docking connector portion comprises a magnetic element.

23. The docking accessory of claim 22 , wherein the docking accessory provides illumination for a camera of the mobile electronic device at least during an image capture event of the camera.

24. The docking accessory of claim 22 , wherein the docking accessory comprises an array of LED lights.

25. The docking accessory of claim 24 , wherein the array of LED lights is an annular array of LED lights.

26. The docking accessory of claim 24 , wherein the docking connector portion is configured to extend the docking accessory away from a back surface of the mobile electronic device.

27. The docking accessory of claim 24 , wherein the docking accessory is positionable in at least an extended state and a collapsed state.

28. The docking accessory of claim 27 , wherein the collapsed state corresponds to the LED light being positioned flat against the back surface of the mobile electronic device.

29. The docking accessory of claim 27 , wherein the extended state corresponds to the LED light being positioned away from the back surface of the mobile electronic device.

30. The docking accessory of claim 27 , wherein the accessory body is further positionable at an angle, relative to the back surface of the mobile electronic device, in a partially extended state between the collapsed state and the extended state.
