Abstract

A multi-array ultrasound system for haptic engagement is provided. The system may include a computing device with a processing system, a tracking device communicatively coupled to the processing system, two or more ultrasound transducer arrays including a plurality of ultrasound transducers, and a driver communicatively coupled to the processing system and the two or more ultrasound transducer arrays.

Claims (26)

1 . A system comprising:

a processing system;

a tracking device communicatively coupled to the processing system;

two or more ultrasound transducer arrays, wherein each ultrasound transducer array comprises a plurality of ultrasound transducers arranged in a set of concentric circles, wherein adjacent concentric circles are not aligned; and

a driver communicatively coupled to the processing system and the plurality of ultrasound transducers.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of ultrasound transducers in each ultrasound transducer array do not align along a radial axis.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the ultrasound transducer arrays are configured to operate at a haptic sensation frequency and an audible sound frequency different from the haptic sensation frequency.

4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the processing system automatically measures a relative pose of the two or more ultrasound transducer arrays.

5 . The system of claim 4 , wherein the system further comprises a plurality of detectors configured to receive ultrasound signals emitted by the two or more ultrasound transducer arrays, wherein the processing system trilaterates the relative poses of the two or more ultrasound transducer arrays based on the ultrasound signals.

6 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the tracking device monitors a volume above the two or more ultrasound transducer arrays for ingressed object positions.

7 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the processing system is configured to control the driver to drive the two or more ultrasound transducer arrays to create a mid-air haptic output proximal the object position.

8 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the tracking device comprises at least one of infrared camera, ultrasonic sensor, or radar system.

9 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the ultrasound system is communicatively coupled to a display, projection device, or virtual reality (VR) system, or augmented reality (AR) system.

10 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising a cover arranged over at least one of the two or more ultrasound transducer arrays, wherein the cover comprises a set of acoustic features.

11 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising a cover arranged over at least one of the two or more ultrasound transducer arrays, wherein the cover comprises a touchpad.

12 . A system comprising:

a set of ultrasound transducer arrays, wherein each ultrasound transducer array comprises a plurality of ultrasound transducers arranged into a set of two-dimensional concentric circles, wherein adjacent concentric circles are not radially aligned; and

a driver operably coupled to the plurality of ultrasound transducer arrays and communicatively connected to a processing system, wherein the processing system is configured to control the set of ultrasound transducer arrays to create a mid-air haptic output.

13 . The system of claim 12 , wherein an ultrasound transducer array of the set of ultrasound transducer arrays is operable at two frequency levels, wherein one frequency level is a high frequency for haptic sensation and a second lower frequency level for audible sound.

14 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the ultrasound system is communicatively coupled to a display, projection device, or virtual reality (VR) system, or augmented reality (AR) system.

15 . The system of claim 12 , further comprising an acoustic speaker.

16 . The system of claim 12 , further comprising a tracking device coupled to a volume above the set of ultrasound transducer arrays and configured to determine positions of objects within the volume.

17 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the processing system directs activation of the set of ultrasound transducer arrays to cooperatively generate the mid-air haptic output proximal the positions.

18 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the tracking device comprises at least one of infrared camera, ultrasonic sensor, or radar system.

19 . The system of claim 12 , further comprising a cover arranged over an ultrasound transducer array of the set of ultrasound transducer arrays, wherein the cover comprises acoustic features.

20 . The system of claim 12 , further comprising a set of ultrasound detectors, wherein the processing system is further configured to track a relative pose between the ultrasound transducer arrays of the set of ultrasound transducer arrays based on ultrasound signals detected by the set of ultrasound detectors, wherein the set of ultrasound transducer arrays is controlled based on the relative pose.
