Abstract

A dynamic radial seal for Touhy-Borst adapters is provided. The seal has an annular base flange with an inwardly directed surface. A plurality of pliable occlusive elements radiate from the inwardly directed surface toward a center and cooperatively form an occlusion with a breaking pressure above typical pressure regimes encountered in vivo in the blood of human subjects.

5 . A dynamic radial Tuohy-Borst seal, comprising:

an annular base flange having an annular surface oriented radially inward; and

a plurality of inward-facing pliable cilia directed radially inward from the annular surface, and arranged in a regular pattern relative to each other on the annular surface, wherein the plurality of pliable cilia form an occlusion in a liquid flow path of the annular base flange, the occlusion having a breaking pressure above physiological blood pressure.

6 . The dynamic radial Tuohy-Borst seal of claim 5 , wherein the plurality of pliable cilia are each characterized by one of a plurality of predetermined lengths from a base of each cilium of the plurality of pliable cilia to a tip of each cilium of the plurality of pliable cilia.

7 . The dynamic radial Tuohy-Borst seal of claim 5 , wherein the plurality of predetermined lengths are a length of a longest cilium, a length of a medium between 90% and 60% of the length of the longest cilium, and a length of a shortest cilium between 90% and 60% of a length of a medium cilium.

8 . The dynamic radial Tuohy-Borst seal of claim 5 , wherein the annular surface of the annular base flange is planar.

9 . The dynamic radial Tuohy-Borst seal of claim 5 , wherein the annular surface of the annular base flange has a secondary curvature perpendicular to the curve of the annular base flange.

10 . The dynamic radial Tuohy-Borst seal of claim 5 , wherein the annular surface of the annular base flange comprises a toroid.

11 . The dynamic radial Tuohy-Borst seal of claim 5 , wherein the cilia are directed radially inward such that the cilia converge in a central location within the annulus.

12 . The dynamic radial Tuohy-Borst seal of claim 5 , wherein the regular pattern comprises a plurality of rows of regularly spaced cilia, wherein the spacing between each cilium and each of its nearest neighbors is regular.

13 . The dynamic radial Tuohy-Borst seal of claim 12 , wherein the plurality of predetermined lengths are a length of a longest cilium, a length of a medium cilium between 90% and 60% of the length of the longest cilium, and a length of a shortest cilium between 90% and 60% of a length of a medium cilium.

14 . The dynamic radial Tuohy-Borst seal of claim 13 , wherein a first row of the plurality of rows of regularly spaced cilia has a longest cilium in a first position of the first row, a medium cilium in a second position of the first row, and a shortest cilium in a third position of the first row, wherein a pattern established by the first, second, and third positions of the first row is repeated through the entire first row.

15 . The dynamic radial Tuohy-Borst seal of claim 14 , wherein a second row of the plurality of rows of regularly spaced cilia is adjacent to the first row of the plurality of rows of regularly spaced cilia, wherein a first position of the second row has a medium cilium, a second position of the second row has a shortest cilium, and a third position of the second row has a longest cilium, wherein a pattern established by the first, second, and third positions of the second row is repeated through the entire second row.

16 . The dynamic radial Tuohy-Borst seal of claim 15 , wherein a third row of the plurality of rows of regularly spaced cilia is adjacent to the second row of the plurality of rows of regularly spaced cilia, wherein a first position of the third row has a shortest cilium, a second position of the third row has a longest cilium, and a third position of the third row has a medium cilium, wherein a pattern established by the first, second, and third positions of the third row is repeated through the entire third row.

17 . The dynamic radial Tuohy-Borst seal of claim 11 , wherein the converged cilia comprise an occlusion of a fluid flow path of the dynamic radial Tuohy-Borst seal.

18 . The dynamic radial Tuohy-Borst seal of claim 12 , wherein the occlusion is characterized by a breaking pressure above physiological blood pressure where the occlusion is challenged to resist a pressure of blood.

19 . The dynamic radial Tuohy-Borst seal of claim 5 further comprising a pressure transducer mounted within a valve body of the dynamic radial Tuohy-Borst seal, wherein the pressure transducer is in fluid communication with a lumen of the valve body.

20 . A dynamic radial Touhy-Borst seal, comprising:

an annular base flange having an annular surface oriented radially inward; and

a plurality of inwardly directed pliable occlusive elements together forming an occlusion with a breaking pressure above physiological blood pressure.

21 . A dynamic radial Tuohy-Borst seal, comprising:

an annular base flange having an annular surface oriented radially inward; and

a plurality of inward-facing pliable cilia of variable lengths directed radially inward from the annular surface, and arranged in a regular pattern relative to each other on the annular surface, wherein the plurality of pliable cilia form an occlusion in a liquid flow path of the annular base flange, the occlusion having a breaking pressure above physiological blood pressure.

22 . The dynamic radial Tuohy-Borst seal of claim 21 , wherein the cilia are directed radially inward such that the cilia converge in a central location within the annulus, forming the occlusion.

23 . The dynamic radial Tuohy-Borst seal of claim 22 , wherein the regular pattern comprises a plurality of rows of regularly spaced cilia, wherein the spacing between each cilium and each of its nearest neighbors is regular.

24 . The dynamic radial Tuohy-Borst seal of claim 23 further comprising a pressure transducer mounted within a valve body of the dynamic radial Tuohy-Borst seal, wherein the pressure transducer is in fluid communication with a lumen of the valve body.
