Abstract

An orthopedic implant includes a bridge having a central axis. In addition, the orthopedic implant includes a plurality of torsion regions coupled to the bridge. Each torsion region has a longitudinal axis. Further, the orthopedic implant includes a plurality of legs. Each leg is coupled to and extends from one of the plurality of torsion regions. Each leg is configured to rotate about the longitudinal axis of the corresponding torsion region between a first position and a second position that is angularly displaced relative to the first position about the longitudinal axis of the corresponding torsion region to induce an elastic torsional stress in the corresponding torsion region. Each leg is biased from the second position toward the first position by the elastic torsional stress in the corresponding torsion region when the leg is in the second position.

Claims (38)

1 . An orthopedic implant, comprising:

a bridge;

a plurality of torsion regions coupled to the bridge; and

a plurality of legs coupled to and extending from the plurality of torsion regions, wherein the plurality of legs are configured to transition between a first position and a second position, wherein in the second position, the plurality of legs are angularly displaced relative to the first position;

wherein the legs are biased toward the first position by elastic torsional stresses in the plurality of torsion regions when the legs are in the second position.

2 . The orthopedic implant of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of legs comprises:

a first portion extending along a first axis from a corresponding torsion region of the plurality of torsion regions; and

a second portion extending from the first portion along a second axis;

wherein the first axis and the second axis are oriented at a non-zero angle relative to one another.

3 . The orthopedic implant of claim 2 , wherein the non-zero angle comprises an acute angle.

4 . The orthopedic implant of claim 2 , wherein the first axis of each of the plurality of legs is parallel to the first axis of each other of the plurality of legs when the plurality of legs are in the first position.

5 . The orthopedic implant of claim 1 , wherein when the plurality of legs are transitioned to the second position, the plurality of legs are further biased toward the first position by an elastic bending stress in the bridge.

6 . The orthopedic implant of claim 1 , wherein an angular displacement of the plurality of legs, between the first position and the second position, is between approximately 10° and approximately 120°.

7 . The orthopedic implant of claim 6 , wherein the orthopedic implant comprises a shape-memory alloy.

8 . The orthopedic implant of claim 7 , wherein the shape-memory alloy comprises nickel (Ni) and titanium (Ti).

9 . The orthopedic implant of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of legs is arranged in a common plane in the first position.

10 . An orthopedic staple, comprising:

a body comprising a plurality of torsion regions and a second region; and

a plurality of legs coupled to the plurality of torsion regions;

wherein an angular displacement of the legs is configured to induce a torsional stress in the torsional regions and a bending stress in the second region.

11 . The orthopedic staple of claim 10 , wherein each of the plurality of legs comprises:

a first portion extending along a first axis from a corresponding torsion region of the plurality of torsion regions; and

a second portion extending from the first portion along a second axis;

wherein the first axis and the second axis are oriented at a non-zero angle relative to one another.

12 . The orthopedic staple of claim 11 , wherein the non-zero angle comprises an acute angle.

13 . The orthopedic staple of claim 12 , wherein the non-zero angle is greater than 0° and less than or equal to 60°.

14 . The orthopedic staple of claim 11 , wherein the orthopedic implant comprises a shape-memory alloy.

15 . The orthopedic staple of claim 14 , wherein the shape-memory alloy comprises nickel (Ni) and titanium (Ti).

16 . The orthopedic staple of claim 10 , wherein each of the plurality of legs are biased to a position in which the plurality of legs are arranged in a common plane.

17 . A method for installing an orthopedic implant comprising a body and a plurality of legs coupled to the body, the method comprising:

(a) applying a torsional stress to the body that imparts a first angular displacement between the plurality of legs;

(b) inserting the plurality of legs into a plurality of holes in a pair of bone segments; and

(c) releasing the body after (b) such that the torsional stress imparts a second angular displacement between the plurality of legs, wherein the second angular displacement is opposite the first angular displacement.

18 . The method of claim 17 , comprising compressing the bone segments together as a result of the second angular displacement.

19 . The method of claim 17 , further comprising:

(d) applying a bending stress to the body during (b); and

(e) increasing a distance between the plurality of legs as a result of (d).

20 . The method of claim 17 , wherein the plurality of holes comprises a first hole in a first of the pair of bone segments and a second hole in a second of the pair of bone segments, wherein the first hole is non-parallel to the second hole.
