Abstract

A system for implementing strobing of existing vehicle hazard lights including an interface to a vehicle wiring harness configured to receive input to an existing vehicle flasher module, and a strobing circuit that responds to an activation signal from the vehicle wiring harness that is indicative of a hazard flasher deployment event by producing an electrical output through the interface to the vehicle wiring harness that causes a strobing of existing vehicle hazard lamps.

Claims (26)

1 . A vehicle safety system comprising:

a microcontroller;

a plurality of vehicle lights;

one or more sensors in communication with at least one vehicle subsystem relating to the position of the vehicle;

wherein the one or more sensors are configured to (i) detect a sudden loss of speed and (ii) output a signal upon detection of the same;

wherein the microcontroller is configured to (i) receive the signal and (ii) selectively activate at least one vehicle light of the plurality of vehicle lights in response to receiving the signal and without user input; and

wherein the activation of the least one vehicle light is in a strobing pattern selected by the microcontroller based at least in part on the position of the vehicle.

2 . The vehicle safety system of claim 1 , wherein the position of the vehicle includes an indication that the vehicle has rolled over.

3 . The vehicle safety system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more sensors includes at least one of an airbag deployment sensor, an anti-lock brake sensor, and an accelerometer.

4 . The vehicle safety system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one light is also a signal light of the vehicle that can be used to indicate a turn direction.

5 . The vehicle safety system of claim 4 , wherein a cycle rate of the at least one light when used as signal light is perceptibly slower than a cycle rate of any of the strobing pattern.

6 . The vehicle safety system of claim 1 , wherein the microcontroller is configured to additionally accept an activation signal from a manual switch and activate the at least one light in the strobing pattern in response thereto.

7 . The vehicle safety system of claim 1 , wherein the strobing pattern contains a directional component.

8 - 15 . (canceled)

16 . A vehicle safety system comprising:

a set of vehicle lights including at least one each of a left front mounted light, a left rear mounted light, a right front mounted light, and a right rear mounted light; and

a microcontroller in operative control of each of the lights of the set of vehicle lights and programmed to:

flash the left front and left rear lights as left signal lights;

flash the right front and right rear lamps as right signal lights;

flash the full set of lights as emergency flashers; and

strobe the full set of lights as an emergency strobe beacon.

wherein the microcontroller implements a cycle of the strobe of any of the set of vehicle lights has a cycle perceptibly faster than it implements a cycle of the flash of any of the set of vehicle lights.

17 . The vehicle safety system of claim 16 , further comprising a vehicle safety system that activates the microcontroller to strobe the full set of lights as an emergency strobe beacon without user input.

18 . The vehicle safety system of claim 17 , further comprising a manual user switch that activates the microcontroller to strobe the full set of lights as an emergency strobe beacon.

19 . The vehicle safety system of claim 18 , wherein the manual user switch can also activate the microcontroller to flash the full set of lights as emergency flashers.

20 . The vehicle safety system of claim 17 , wherein the microcontroller comprises a body control module in communication with the vehicle safety system via a vehicle data bus.
