Abstract

A radar system comprises a physical radar array comprising a plurality of physical transmit antennas, each configured to transmit a respective signal having a wavelength λ. The physical radar array further comprises a plurality of physical receive antennas, each configured to receive each of the respective signals. The radar system further comprises a neural network configured to receive data from the physical radar array and generate data corresponding to an emulated array of antennas, wherein a defined distance between each antenna of the emulated array of antennas is λ/2.

Claims (34)

1 . A radar system comprising:

a physical radar array comprising:

a plurality of physical transmit antennas; and

a plurality of physical receive antennas; and

a neural network arranged to receive data from the physical radar array and generate data corresponding to an emulated array of antennas, wherein a defined distance between each antenna of the emulated array of antennas is equal.

2 . The radar system of claim 1 , wherein a defined distance between each antenna of the emulated array of antennas is λ/2.

3 . The radar system of claim 1 , wherein a distance between each physical receive antenna of the plurality of physical receive antennas is inconsistent.

4 . The radar system of claim 1 , further comprising a processor coupled to the physical radar array and arranged to generate data corresponding to a virtual antenna array, wherein the data received by the neural network includes the data corresponding to the virtual antenna array.

5 . The radar system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of physical transmit antennas are arranged in both a horizontal direction and in a vertical direction.

6 . The radar system of claim 1 , wherein the generated data corresponding to the emulated array of antennas includes data for a two-dimensional emulated array of antennas.

7 . The radar system of claim 1 , wherein the neural network generates both horizontal and azimuth data corresponding to the emulated array of antennas.

8 . The radar system of claim 6 , wherein a horizontal distance and an azimuth distance between each antenna of the emulated array of antennas is λ/2.

9 . A radar system comprising:

a physical antenna array comprising:

a plurality of physical transmit antennas; and

a plurality of physical receive antennas; and

a processor coupled to the physical antenna array and arranged to:

generate data for a virtual antenna array using data received from the physical antenna array; and

generate, using a neural network, data for an emulated array of antennas, wherein the neural network uses the generated data for the virtual antenna array.

10 . The radar system of claim 9 , wherein the generated data for the virtual antenna array corresponds to virtual antennas having an inconsistent spacing between adjacent antennas.

11 . The radar system of claim 9 , wherein a defined distance between each antenna of the emulated array of antennas is equal.

12 . The radar system of claim 9 , wherein a defined distance between each antenna of the emulated array of antennas is λ/2.

13 . The radar system of claim 9 , wherein a distance between each physical receive antenna of the plurality of physical receive antennas is inconsistent.

14 . The radar system of claim 9 , wherein the plurality of physical transmit antennas are arranged in both a horizontal direction and in a vertical direction.

15 . The radar system of claim 9 wherein the generated data for the emulated array of antennas includes data for a two-dimensional emulated array of antennas.

16 . The radar system of claim 9 , wherein the neural network generates both horizontal and azimuth data for the emulated array of antennas.

17 . The radar system of claim 16 , wherein a horizontal distance and an azimuth distance between each adjacent antenna of the emulated array of antennas is λ/2.

18 . A method of operating a radar system, the method comprising:

generating first data from a physical antenna array, wherein the physical antenna array comprises:

a plurality of physical transmit antennas; and

a plurality of physical receive antennas; and

generating, using a neural network, second data for an emulated array of antennas wherein the neural network uses the first data.

19 . The radar system of claim 18 , wherein a defined distance between each antenna of the emulated array of antennas is equal.

20 . The radar system of claim 18 , wherein the neural network generates both horizontal and azimuth data for the emulated array of antennas.
