Abstract

A wearable defibrillator for use in dry and non-dry locations includes a harness, ECG sensing electrodes, therapy electrodes configured to deliver defibrillating shocks, and a user interface pod configured to be attached to the harness. The user interface pod includes a speaker configured to provide an audible alarm and one or more buttons configured to be pressed by the patient to indicate the patient is conscious. The wearable defibrillator also includes a waterproof or water-resistant control unit configured to determine whether the patient is experiencing a cardiac arrhythmia, issue the audible alarm, and deliver the defibrillating shocks. The wearable defibrillator further includes a connection pod configured to electrically couple the therapy electrodes to the control unit. The user interface pod is configured to be electrically coupled to the control unit via a waterproof removable connector, which forms a water-tight seal with the control unit when connected to the control unit.

1 - 34 . (canceled)

35 . A wearable defibrillator for protecting patients from cardiac arrest and for use in dry and non-dry locations, comprising:

a harness comprising a pair of shoulder straps and a belt configured to be worn about a torso of a patient;

a plurality of ECG sensing electrodes configured to sense an ECG of the patient, wherein the plurality of ECG sensing electrodes are attached to the harness;

a plurality of therapy electrodes configured to deliver one or more therapeutic defibrillating shocks to a body of the patient, wherein the plurality of therapy electrodes comprise at least a first therapy electrode that is configured to be disposed on a front of the patient's torso and a second therapy electrode that is configured to be disposed on a back of the patient's torso;

a user interface pod configured to be attached to the harness, the user interface pod comprising

a speaker configured to provide an audible alarm to alert at least one of the patient or a bystander to the patient's medical condition, and

one or more buttons configured to be pressed by the patient to indicate that the patient is conscious,

a waterproof or water-resistant control unit configured to be electrically coupled to the plurality of ECG sensing electrodes, the plurality of therapy electrodes, and the user interface pod, wherein the control unit is further configured to

monitor the patient's medical condition,

determine whether the patient is experiencing a cardiac arrhythmia,

issue the audible alarm to alert the at least one of the patient or the bystander to the patient's medical condition via the speaker of the user interface pod, and

deliver the one or more therapeutic defibrillating shocks to the body of the patient via the plurality of therapy electrodes, responsive to the patient not pressing the one or more buttons of the user interface pod after the issuance of the audible alarm; and

a connection pod configured to be attached to the harness and further configured to electrically couple at least the plurality of therapy electrodes to the control unit,

wherein the user interface pod is configured to be electrically coupled to the control unit via a waterproof removable connector that permits the user interface pod to be disconnected and reconnected to the control unit, the removable connector forming a water-tight seal with the control unit when connected to the control unit.

36 . The wearable defibrillator of claim 35 , wherein the connection pod is configured as a waterproof connection pod.

37 . The wearable defibrillator of claim 36 , wherein the connection pod comprises electronic circuitry that is potted with a waterproofing potting compound.

38 . The wearable defibrillator of claim 35 , further comprising at least one additional sensor coupled to the control unit configured to monitor at least one of a physiological condition or an activity of the patient.

39 . The wearable defibrillator of claim 38 , wherein the at least one additional sensor is configured to measure at least one of blood pressure, heart rate, heart sounds, thoracic impedance, blood oxygen level, respiration rate, or activity level.

40 . The wearable defibrillator of claim 35 , wherein the control unit further comprises a water-resistant or waterproof housing formed from a water-resistant or waterproof material.

41 . The wearable defibrillator of claim 40 , wherein the water-resistant or waterproof housing comprises one or more openings sealed to prevent ingress of water.

42 . The wearable defibrillator of claim 41 , wherein the one or more openings are sealed with one or more O-rings.

43 . The wearable defibrillator of claim 41 , wherein the one or more openings are sealed with an elastomer sealant.

44 . The wearable defibrillator of claim 35 , wherein the user interface pod comprises a clip configured to attach the user interface pod to the harness.

45 . The wearable defibrillator of claim 35 , wherein the harness is formed from a waterproof or water-resistant material.

46 . A wearable defibrillator for protecting patients from cardiac arrest and for use in dry and non-dry locations, comprising:

a harness comprising a pair of shoulder straps and a belt configured to be worn about a torso of a patient;

a plurality of ECG sensing electrodes configured to sense an ECG of the patient, wherein the plurality of ECG sensing electrodes are attached to the harness;

a plurality of therapy electrodes configured to deliver one or more therapeutic defibrillating shocks to a body of the patient, wherein the plurality of therapy electrodes comprise at least a first therapy electrode that is configured to be disposed on a front of the patient's torso and a second therapy electrode that is configured to be disposed on a back of the patient's torso;

a wireless user interface pod comprising

a speaker configured to provide an audible alarm to alert at least one of the patient or a bystander to the patient's medical condition, and

one or more buttons configured to be pressed by the patient to indicate that the patient is conscious,

a waterproof or water-resistant control unit configured to be electrically coupled to the plurality of ECG sensing electrodes, the plurality of therapy electrodes, and the user interface pod, wherein the control unit is further configured to

monitor the patient's medical condition,

determine whether the patient is experiencing a cardiac arrhythmia,

issue the audible alarm to alert the at least one of the patient or the bystander to the patient's medical condition via the speaker of the user interface pod, and

deliver the one or more therapeutic defibrillating shocks to the body of the patient via the plurality of therapy electrodes, responsive to the patient not pressing the one or more buttons of the user interface pod after the issuance of the audible alarm; and

a connection pod configured to be attached to the harness and further configured to electrically couple at least the plurality of therapy electrodes to the control unit.

47 . The wearable defibrillator of claim 46 , wherein the wireless user interface pod is formed from a waterproof material.
