Abstract

An antimicrobial and/or anti-odor, textile coating composition and methods using said composition to reduce microbial growth and reduce odors are disclosed. The composition comprising: benzoic acid, terephthalic acid, and optionally water; wherein the benzoic acid and the terephthalic acid are present in the composition at a ratio of 2:1 to 8:1.

Claims (36)

1 . An antimicrobial and/or anti-odor, textile coating composition comprising:

(a) benzoic acid at a concentration of 5 weight % to 50 weight % based on the total weight of the composition;

(b) terephthalic acid at a concentration of 5 weight % to 20 weight % based on the total weight of the composition;

(c) water; and

wherein the benzoic acid and the terephthalic acid are present in the composition at a ratio of 2:1 to 8:1.

2 . The antimicrobial and/or anti-odor, textile coating composition according to claim 1 , wherein the water is present in the textile coating composition from 30 weight % to 50 weight % based on the total weight of the composition.

3 . The antimicrobial and/or anti-odor, textile coating composition according to claim 1 , further comprising a dispersant in the textile coating composition from 1 weight % to 12 weight % based on the total weight of the composition to aid in dispersing the textile coating composition.

4 . The antimicrobial and/or anti-odor, textile coating composition according to claim 1 , further comprising a defoamer present in the textile coating composition from 0.05 weight % to 1 weight % based on the total weight of the composition.

5 . The antimicrobial and/or anti-odor, textile coating composition according to claim 1 , further comprising one or more rheology modifiers, in the textile coating composition from 0.05 weight % to 0.9 weight % based on the total weight of the composition.

6 . The antimicrobial and/or anti-odor, textile coating composition according to claim 5 , wherein the one or more rheology modifiers comprise a first rheology modifier and a second rheology modifier.

7 . The antimicrobial and/or anti-odor, textile coating composition according to claim 6 , wherein the first rheology modifier comprises magnesium aluminum silicate or xanthan gum.

8 . The antimicrobial and/or anti-odor, textile coating composition according to claim 7 , wherein the first rheology modifier is present in the textile coating composition from 0.1 weight % to 0.5 weight % based on the total weight of the composition.

9 . The antimicrobial and/or anti-odor, textile coating composition according to claim 8 , wherein the first rheology modifier is present in the textile coating composition from 0.2 weight % to 0.4 weight % based on the total weight of the composition.

10 . The antimicrobial and/or anti-odor, textile coating composition according to claim 6 , wherein the second rheology modifier comprises magnesium aluminum silicate or xanthan gum.

11 . The antimicrobial and/or anti-odor, textile coating composition according to claim 10 , wherein the second rheology modifier is present in the textile coating composition from 0.05 weight % to 0.3 weight % based on the total weight of the composition.

12 . The antimicrobial and/or anti-odor, textile coating composition according to claim 11 , wherein the second rheology modifier is present in the textile coating composition from 0.1 weight % to 0.2 weight % based on the total weight of the composition.

13 . The antimicrobial and/or anti-odor, textile coating composition according to claim 7 , wherein the first rheology modifier and the second rheology modifier are present in the textile coating composition at a ratio ranging from 5:1 to 1:2 relative to one another.

14 . The antimicrobial and/or anti-odor, textile coating composition according to claim 13 , wherein the first rheology modifier and the second rheology modifier are present in the textile coating composition at a ratio ranging from 3:1 to 1:1 relative to one another.

15 . An antimicrobial and/or anti-odor, textile coating composition comprising:

(a) the composition according to claim 1 in an amount from 0.5 weight % to 25 weight %; and

(b) water.

16 . A textile material having the antimicrobial and/or anti-odor, textile coating composition according to claim 1 applied thereon, wherein the textile material reduces bacterial growth by a 3 log reduction or greater when compared with an untreated textile material.

17 . The textile material according to claim 16 , wherein benzoic acid forms an outermost layer and terephthalic acid forms an intermediary layer positioned between the benzoic acid and the textile material having the textile coating composition applied thereon.

18 . The textile material according to claim 16 , wherein the textile material reduces bacterial growth by a 3 log reduction or greater after twenty-five home launderings when compared with an untreated textile material.

19 . The textile material according to claim 16 , wherein the textile material comprises polyester.

20 . The textile material according to claim 16 , wherein the antimicrobial and/or anti-odor, textile coating composition is present on the textile from 0.3 weight % to 37.5 weight % on weight of fabric.

21 . The textile material according to claim 16 , wherein the textile material comprises benzoic acid from 0.12 weight % to 15 weight % based on weight of fabric.

22 . The textile material according to claim 16 , wherein the textile material comprises terephthalic acid from 0.024 weight % to 3 weight % based on weight of fabric.

23 . A method of reducing and/or preventing microbial growth and/or odor on a textile material, the method comprising:

(a) applying the antimicrobial and/or anti-odor, textile coating composition according to claim 1 to a textile material;

wherein, applying the antimicrobial and/or anti-odor, textile coating composition comprises padding or exhaustion of the composition onto the textile material to obtain a treated textile material that resists the growth of microbes and controls odor on the textile for a prolonged period of time.

24 . The method according to claim 23 , further comprising, prior to step (a), adding the antimicrobial and/or anti-odor, textile coating composition according to claim 1 to water to create an application bath.

25 . The method according to claim 24 , further comprising adding a dispersant to the application bath, heating the mixture, or a combination thereof.

26 . The method according to claim 23 , wherein the antimicrobial and/or anti-odor, textile coating composition is applied to the textile from 0.3 weight % to 37.5 weight % on weight of fabric.

27 . The method according to claim 23 , wherein the benzoic acid is applied to the treated textile from 0.12 weight % to 15 weight % on weight of fabric.

28 . The method according to claim 23 , wherein the terephthalic acid is applied to the treated textile from 0.024 weight % to 3 weight % on weight of fabric.
