Abstract

A charging hub for a base station that is configured to receive an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) during docking. The charging hub includes a first bracket and a second bracket that is operatively connected to the first bracket such that the second bracket is movable in relation thereto along a vertical axis of movement to thereby reposition the charging hub from a retracted position into an extended position and facilitate electrical connection of the charging hub to the UAV.

Claims (48)

1 . A charging hub for a base station configured to receive an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) during docking, wherein the charging hub comprises:

a first bracket; and

a second bracket positioned within the first bracket and indirectly connected thereto such that the second bracket is movable within and in relation to the first bracket along a vertical axis of movement, wherein movement of the second bracket repositions the charging hub from a retracted position into an extended position to thereby facilitate electrical connection of the charging hub to the UAV.

2 . The charging hub of claim 1 , wherein the first bracket is fixedly positioned within the base station.

3 . The charging hub of claim 1 , further comprising a guide mechanism extending between and connecting the first bracket and the second bracket.

4 . The charging hub of claim 3 , wherein the guide mechanism includes:

a carriage connected to the first bracket.

5 . The charging hub of claim 4 , wherein the guide mechanism further includes:

a rail connected to the second bracket and engaging the carriage to facilitate relative linear movement between the carriage and the rail.

6 . The charging hub of claim 5 , wherein the carriage is positioned within the rail.

7 . The charging hub of claim 6 , wherein the carriage includes:

a chassis; and

flanges extending outwardly from the chassis in generally orthogonal relation to the vertical axis of movement.

8 . The charging hub of claim 7 , wherein the chassis is connected to the first bracket.

9 . The charging hub of claim 7 , wherein the rail defines channels configured to receive the flanges such that carriage moves through the channels during movement of the second bracket.

10 . The charging hub of claim 1 , further comprising:

a sensor connected to the first bracket; and

a magnet connected to the second bracket and configured to interface with the sensor to determine a position of the charging hub.

11 . A charging hub for a base station configured to receive an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) during docking, wherein the charging hub comprises:

a fixed bracket;

a motor assembly connected to the fixed bracket;

a drive member engaging the motor assembly such that actuation of the motor assembly causes linear movement of the drive member, wherein the drive member includes a first end and a second end;

a movable bracket connected to the drive member such that linear movement of the drive member causes corresponding movement of the movable bracket;

a guide mechanism extending between and connecting the fixed bracket and the movable bracket, wherein the guide mechanism includes:

a carriage connected to the fixed bracket; and

a rail connected to the movable bracket and engaging the carriage to facilitate relative linear movement between the carriage and the rail; and

a charger subassembly connected to the movable bracket such that linear movement of the movable bracket causes corresponding movement of the charger subassembly during repositioning of the charging hub between retracted and extended positions, wherein the charger subassembly is configured for electrical connection to the UAV.

12 . The charging hub of claim 11 , wherein the fixed bracket includes:

a first body panel connected to the carriage;

a first mount extending from the first body panel and connected to the motor assembly; and

first side panels extending from the first body panel.

13 . The charging hub of claim 12 , wherein the first mount defines an aperture configured to receive the motor assembly and the drive member such that the motor assembly and the drive member extend into the first mount.

14 . The charging hub of claim 12 , wherein the movable bracket includes:

a second body panel connected to the rail;

a second mount extending from the second body panel and connected to the charger subassembly; and

second side panels extending from the second body panel.

15 . The charging hub of claim 14 , wherein the first mount and the second mount extend in a first direction, and the first side panels and the second side panels extend in a second direction generally opposite to the first direction.

16 . The charging hub of claim 14 , wherein the second mount includes an aperture configured to receive the second end of the drive member so as to inhibit relative rotation between the drive member and the second mount.

17 . The charging hub of claim 16 , wherein the aperture and the second end of the drive member include corresponding non-circular cross-sectional configurations.

18 . A charging hub for a base station configured to receive an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) during docking, wherein the charging hub comprises:

a mounting bracket;

a guide mechanism connected to the mounting bracket;

a slide bracket positioned within the mounting bracket and connected to the guide mechanism such that the guide mechanism facilitates movement of the slide bracket in relation to the mounting bracket; and

a charger subassembly connected to the slide bracket such that movement of the slide bracket causes corresponding movement of the charger subassembly to thereby facilitate electrical connection of the charger subassembly to the UAV.

19 . The charging hub of claim 18 , wherein the guide mechanism includes:

a carriage connected to the mounting bracket; and

a rail connected to the slide bracket, wherein the rail engages the carriage so as to facilitate relative linear movement therebetween.

20 . The charging hub of claim 19 , wherein the carriage and the rail are configured such that the rail is slidable in relation to the carriage along a generally vertical axis of movement during movement of the slide bracket in relation to the mounting bracket.
