Abstract

In some aspects, the disclosure is directed to methods and systems for a dynamic, reconfigurable virtual reality environment with in-environment access to external data and resources. Implementations of these systems also provide an external mechanism for modifying other aspects of the virtual reality experience with no need to recode or compile the experience. This can alter the primary flow of the experience, change its behavior based on the specific user accessing it and add branded or customer-specific aspects to the application. The same level or environment can provide drastically different experiences for various users from beginners through experts, even allowing the option of random or ordered events, controllable by an instructor or administrator, through simple configuration.

Claims (45)

1 . A method for dynamic reconfiguration of a compiled virtual environment, comprising:

receiving, by a computing system, configuration data for a virtual environment, wherein the configuration data is in a compiled format, the configuration data is associated with a plurality of contexts, and the configuration data identifies one or more virtual objects within the virtual environment;

determining, by the computing system, a context for instantiation of the virtual environment from the plurality of contexts associated with the configuration data;

retrieving, by the computing system, metadata for at least one virtual object of the one or more virtual objects based on the determined context of the plurality of contexts; and

launching, by the computing system, the virtual environment using the retrieved metadata for the at least one virtual object.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the compiled format prevents modification of the configuration data by the computing system.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the configuration data identifies a first virtual object, and does not identify a function to be executed on detection of user interaction with the first virtual object.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the configuration data identifies a first virtual object, and does not include at least one item of metadata for the first virtual object necessary to display at least one aspect of the first virtual object during runtime of the virtual environment.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the configuration data identifies a first virtual object, and comprises at least one address associated with a corresponding context of the plurality of contexts for retrieval of metadata for the first virtual object; and further comprising:

identifying, by the computing system, the address corresponding to the determined context;

retrieving, by the computing system, metadata from the identified address; and

adding, by the computing system, the retrieved metadata to the first virtual object during launching of the virtual environment.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the at least one address associated with a corresponding context of the plurality of contexts for retrieval of metadata for the first virtual object is in a private uniform resource identifier (URI) scheme.

7 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the configuration data comprises a first address associated with a first context of the plurality of contexts for retrieval of metadata for the first virtual object, and a different second address associated with a second context of the plurality of contexts for retrieval of metadata for the first virtual object.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the configuration data identifies a first virtual object, and comprises at least one address associated with a corresponding context of the plurality of contexts for retrieval of metadata for the first virtual object; and further comprising:

identifying, by the computing system, that the configuration data does not include an address corresponding to the determined context for retrieval of metadata for the first virtual object; and

responsive to the identification, adding, by the computing system, default metadata to the first virtual object during launching of the virtual environment.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the configuration data identifies a first virtual object, and comprises a first address associated with a first context of the plurality of contexts for retrieval of metadata for the first virtual object, wherein the determined context is a second context of the plurality of contexts; and further comprising:

identifying, by the computing system, that the configuration data does not identify a second address associated with the second context for retrieval of metadata for the first virtual object;

responsive to the identification, retrieving, by the computing system, either metadata from the first address or default metadata; and

adding, by the computing system, the retrieved metadata from the first address or default metadata to the first virtual object during launching of the virtual environment.

10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the computing system retrieves the metadata from the first address responsive to the first context being a child of the second text in a logical hierarchy.

11 . A system for dynamic reconfiguration of a compiled virtual environment, comprising:

one or more processors in communication with one or more storage devices, the one or more processors configured to:

receive configuration data for a virtual environment, wherein the configuration data is in a compiled format, the configuration data is associated with a plurality of contexts, and the configuration data identifies one or more virtual objects within the virtual environment,

determine a context for instantiation of the virtual environment from the plurality of contexts associated with the configuration data,

retrieve metadata for at least one virtual object of the one or more virtual objects based on the determined context of the plurality of contexts, and

launch the virtual environment using the retrieved metadata for the at least one virtual object.

12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the compiled format prevents modification of the configuration data by the computing system.

13 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the configuration data identifies a first virtual object, and does not identify a function to be executed on detection of user interaction with the first virtual object.

14 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the configuration data identifies a first virtual object, and does not include at least one item of metadata for the first virtual object necessary to display at least one aspect of the first virtual object during runtime of the virtual environment.

15 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the configuration data identifies a first virtual object, and comprises at least one address associated with a corresponding context of the plurality of contexts for retrieval of metadata for the first virtual object; and wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

identify the address corresponding to the determined context;

retrieve metadata from the identified address; and

add the retrieved metadata to the first virtual object during launching of the virtual environment.

16 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the at least one address associated with a corresponding context of the plurality of contexts for retrieval of metadata for the first virtual object is in a private uniform resource identifier (URI) scheme.

17 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the configuration data comprises a first address associated with a first context of the plurality of contexts for retrieval of metadata for the first virtual object, and a different second address associated with a second context of the plurality of contexts for retrieval of metadata for the first virtual object.

18 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the configuration data identifies a first virtual object, and comprises at least one address associated with a corresponding context of the plurality of contexts for retrieval of metadata for the first virtual object; and wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

identify that the configuration data does not include an address corresponding to the determined context for retrieval of metadata for the first virtual object; and

responsive to the identification, add default metadata to the first virtual object during launching of the virtual environment.

19 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the configuration data identifies a first virtual object, and comprises a first address associated with a first context of the plurality of contexts for retrieval of metadata for the first virtual object, wherein the determined context is a second context of the plurality of contexts; and wherein the one or more processors are further configured to:

identify that the configuration data does not identify a second address associated with the second context for retrieval of metadata for the first virtual object;

responsive to the identification, retrieve either metadata from the first address or default metadata; and

add the retrieved metadata from the first address or default metadata to the first virtual object during launching of the virtual environment.

20 . The system of claim 19 , wherein the computing system retrieves the metadata from the first address responsive to the first context being a child of the second text in a logical hierarchy.
