MOTORIZED LOCK METHOD AND ASSEMBLY
A motorized lock assembly and a method of motorizing a lock installed in a door. The motorized lock assembly including a motorized drive assembly to be mounted to an interior side of the door in driving engagement with a bolt assembly of the lock. The motorized lock assembly also including a communications assembly to receive an instruction from a user and to direct an operation of the motorized drive assembly in response to the instruction from the user.

21 . A mortise lock assembly, comprising:
an in-door mortise casing assembly including a deadbolt assembly and a latch assembly;
a handle assembly, including an interior handle to be operably coupled to a latch of the latch assembly to selectively retract the latch and an exterior handle operative to be operably coupled to the latch to selective retract the latch, and when the handles are operably coupled to the latch and a deadbolt of the deadbolt assembly is in an extended position at least one of the interior and exterior handles is locked;
a thumb turn assembly including a manual thumb turn to be provided on an interior side of the door and operatively coupled to the deadbolt to selectively move the deadbolt between the extended position and a retracted position;
a motor operatively coupled to the deadbolt to selectively move the deadbolt between the extended position and a retracted position; and
a communications system communicatively coupled to the motor to receive an instruction from a user and direct an operation of the motor in response to the instruction from the user.
22 . The mortise lock assembly of claim 21 , wherein the communications system provides an auto lock button, and pressing the auto lock button when the deadbolt is retracted activates the motor to extend the deadbolt.
23 . The mortise lock assembly of claim 22 , wherein the auto lock button is a physical button.
24 . The mortise lock assembly of claim 23 , wherein physically manipulating the auto lock button by holding down the auto lock button for a predetermined time switches the mortise lock assembly from a first operational mode to a second operational mode.
25 . The mortise lock assembly of claim 23 , wherein the auto lock button is provided on an interior housing of the mortise lock assembly, the interior housing to be mounted to the interior side of the door.
26 . The mortise lock assembly of claim 21 , wherein the communications system is operable to receive the instruction wirelessly from a user device.
27 . The mortise lock assembly of claim 26 , wherein the communications system provides an auto lock button, and pressing the auto lock button when the deadbolt is retracted activates the motor to extend the deadbolt.
28 . The mortise lock assembly of claim 27 , wherein the auto lock button is a physical button.
29 . The mortise lock assembly of claim 28 , wherein physically manipulating the auto lock button by holding down the auto lock button for a predetermined time switches the mortise lock assembly from a first operational mode to a second operational mode.
30 . The mortise lock assembly of claim 28 , wherein the auto lock button is provided on an interior housing of the mortise lock assembly, the interior housing to be mounted to the interior side of the door.
31 . The mortise lock assembly of claim 26 , further comprising a lock position indicator operable to provide a visual indication of a position of the deadbolt, the lock position indicator being separate from the manual thumb turn.
32 . The mortise lock assembly of claim 31 , wherein the lock position indicator is a physical element.
33 . The mortise lock assembly of claim 32 , wherein the mortise lock assembly includes an interior housing to be mounted to the interior side of the door, and the lock position indicator is provided on the interior housing.
34 . The mortise lock assembly of claim 34 , wherein one of the first and second positions is a retracted position and the other of the first and second position is an extended position in which a distal end of lock position indicator is moved farther from a main body of the interior housing than in the one of the first and second positions.
35 . The mortise lock assembly of claim 21 , further comprising a lock position indicator operable to provide a visual indication of a position of the deadbolt, the lock position indicator being separate from the manual thumb turn.
36 . The mortise lock assembly of claim 35 , wherein the lock position indicator is a physical element.
37 . The mortise lock assembly of claim 21 , wherein the mortise lock assembly includes an interior housing to be mounted to the interior side of the door, and the motor is provided in the interior housing.
38 . The mortise lock assembly of claim 21 , further comprising an exterior housing to be mounted to an exterior side of the door, and the communications system includes a user interface physically provided on the exterior housing.
39 . The mortise lock assembly of claim 39 , further comprising a communication cable operable to extend through the door to communicatively couple the exterior housing with an interior housing mounted to the interior side of the door and containing the motor.
40 . A method of installing the mortise lock assembly of claim 40 , including mounting the interior housing to the interior side of the door, mounting the exterior housing to the exterior side of the door, and passing the communications cable through the door to couple the interior and exterior housings, wherein the communications cable coupling the interior and exterior housings bypasses the in-door mortise casing assembly.
