Abstract

Biodegradable, cross-linked polymer particle embolics and methods of making the same are described. The particle embolics can be used as embolization agents.

Claims (25)

1 . A polymer particle, comprising:

a reaction product of a prepolymer solution including a solvent, two or more monomers, and at least one crosslinker having a structure:

wherein the two or more monomers comprise a neutral monomer, a hydroxylated monomer, a negatively charged monomer, or a combination thereof.

2 . The polymer particle of claim 1 having a diameter between about 40 μm and about 1,200 μm.

3 . The polymer particle of claim 1 having a diameter between about 75 μm and about 1,200 μm.

4 . The polymer particle of claim 1 , wherein the neutral monomer comprises acrylate, acrylamide, methacrylate or methacrylamide functional groups.

5 . The polymer particle of claim 1 , wherein the hydroxylated monomer comprises 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate, 2-hydroxymethacrylate, glycerol monomethacrylate, or a derivative thereof, or a combination thereof.

6 . The polymer particle of claim 1 , wherein negatively charged monomer comprises 3-sulfopropyl acrylate, potassium salt, 3-sulfopropyl acrylate, or a combination thereof.

7 . The polymer particles of claim 1 , wherein the prepolymer solution further includes a second crosslinker including a second linkage selected from an ester, a thioester, a carbonate, a peptide cleavable by matrix metalloproteinases, a peptide cleavable by matrix collagenases, a peptide cleavable by matrix elastases, and a peptide cleavable by matrix cathepsins.

8 . The polymer particle of claim 1 , wherein the polymer particles are biodegradable.

9 . The polymer particle of claim 1 , wherein the polymer particles are biostable.

10 . The polymer particle of claim 1 , wherein the neutral monomer is dimethylacrylamide.

11 . The polymer particle of claim 1 , wherein the at least one crosslinker is

12 . The polymer particle of claim 1 , wherein the at least one crosslinker is

13 . The polymer particle of claim 1 , wherein the at least one crosslinker is

14 . The polymer particle of claim 1 , wherein the at least one crosslinker is

15 . The polymer particle of claim 1 , wherein the at least one crosslinker is

16 . The polymer particle of claim 1 , wherein the at least one crosslinker is

17 . The polymer particle of claim 1 , wherein the at least one crosslinker is

18 . A method of making a polymer particle, comprising:

reacting a prepolymer solution including a solvent, two or more monomers, and at least one crosslinker having a structure:

and an initiator in an oil; and

forming the polymer particle.

19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein the polymer particle has a diameter between about 40 μm and about 1,200 μm.

20 . The method of claim 18 , wherein the oil is mineral oil and the initiator is azobisisobutyrontrile.
