Abstract

An embodiment of an electronic apparatus may include a substrate and a controller coupled to the substrate, the controller including circuitry to control access to a NAND-based storage media that includes a plurality of NAND devices located on the substrate and organized into two or more physical clusters with each NAND device uniquely assigned to one of the two or more physical clusters, perform data access to a first physical cluster of the two or more physical clusters at a first bandwidth, and perform data access to a second physical cluster of the two or more physical clusters at a second bandwidth that is slower than the first bandwidth. Other embodiments are disclosed and claimed.

Claims (31)

1 - 20 . (canceled)

21 . A controller comprising circuitry to:

control access to NAND-based storage media organized as two or more physical clusters, the NAND-based storage media comprising a plurality of NAND devices, wherein each NAND device of the plurality of NAND devices is associated with a respective physical cluster of the two or more physical clusters;

perform, at a first bandwidth, a first data access to a first physical cluster of the two or more physical clusters, that is associated with a first NAND device of the plurality of NAND devices; and

perform, at a second bandwidth different from the first bandwidth, a second data access to a second physical cluster, of the two or more physical clusters, that is associated with a second NAND device of the plurality of NAND devices.

22 . The controller of claim 21 , wherein the two or more physical clusters are organized around the controller based at least in part on respective operational speeds of the two or more physical clusters.

23 . The controller of claim 21 , wherein the circuitry is further to direct an access request to one of the first physical cluster or the second physical cluster based at least in part on a drive target of an input/output transaction.

24 . The controller of claim 21 , wherein the circuitry is further to control access to the NAND-based storage media based at least in part on a type of NAND media associated with the respective physical cluster of the two or more physical clusters.

25 . The controller of claim 24 , wherein the circuitry is to direct an access request to one of the two or more physical clusters based at least in part on one or more characteristics associated with the type of NAND media.

26 . The controller of claim 25 , wherein the one or more characteristics associated with the type of NAND media comprise at least one of a performance, a capacity, or an endurance.

27 . The controller of claim 21 , wherein a solid-state drive comprises the controller and the NAND-based storage media.

28 . A system, comprising:

NAND-based storage media organized as two or more physical clusters, the NAND-based storage media comprising a plurality of NAND devices, wherein each NAND device of the plurality of NAND devices is associated with a respective physical cluster of the two or more physical clusters; and

a controller communicatively coupled to the NAND-based storage media, the controller comprising circuitry to:

perform, at a first bandwidth, a first data access to a first physical cluster of the two or more physical clusters, that is associated with a first NAND device of the plurality of NAND devices; and

perform, at a second bandwidth different from the first bandwidth, a second data access to a second physical cluster, of the two or more physical clusters, that is associated with a second NAND device of the plurality of NAND devices.

29 . The system of claim 28 , wherein the two or more physical clusters are organized around the controller based at least in part on respective operational speeds of the two or more physical clusters.

30 . The system of claim 28 , wherein the circuitry is further to direct an access request to one of the first physical cluster or the second physical cluster based at least in part on a drive target of an input/output transaction.

31 . The system of claim 28 , wherein the circuitry is further to control access to the NAND-based storage media based at least in part on a type of NAND media associated with the respective physical cluster of the two or more physical clusters.

32 . The system of claim 31 , wherein the circuitry is to direct an access request to one of the two or more physical clusters based at least in part on one or more characteristics associated with the type of NAND media.

33 . The system of claim 32 , wherein the one or more characteristics associated with the type of NAND media comprise at least one of a performance, a capacity, or an endurance.

34 . The system of claim 28 , further comprising a solid-state drive that comprises the controller and the NAND-based storage media.

35 . A method comprising:

controlling access to NAND-based storage media organized as two or more physical clusters, the NAND-based storage media comprising a plurality of NAND devices, wherein each NAND device of the plurality of NAND devices is associated with a respective physical cluster of the two or more physical clusters;

performing, at a first bandwidth, a first data access to a first physical cluster of the two or more physical clusters, that is associated with a first NAND device of the plurality of NAND devices; and

performing, at a second bandwidth different from the first bandwidth, a second data access to a second physical cluster, of the two or more physical clusters, that is associated with a second NAND device of the plurality of NAND devices.

36 . The method of claim 35 , wherein the two or more physical clusters are organized around the controller based at least in part on respective operational speeds of the two or more physical clusters.

37 . The method of claim 35 , further comprising directing an access request to one of the first physical cluster or the second physical cluster based at least in part on a drive target of an input/output transaction.

38 . The method of claim 35 , further comprising controlling access to the NAND-based storage media based at least in part on a type of NAND media associated with the respective physical cluster of the two or more physical clusters.

39 . The method of claim 38 , further comprising directing an access request to one of the two or more physical clusters based at least in part on one or more characteristics associated with the type of NAND media.

40 . The method of claim 39 , wherein the one or more characteristics associated with the type of NAND media comprise at least one of a performance, a capacity, or an endurance.
