Abstract

Methods, systems, apparatus, and non-transitory computer readable media are described for using a vehicle as a payment device. Various aspects may include receiving a selection of a stored financial card or financial account at a vehicle head unit. The selected financial card or financial account may be transmitted to a point-of-sale (POS) terminal for making a payment by transmitting a tokenized card number to the POS terminal. The tokenized card number may be transmitted over a very short-range communication link to ensure that the transmission is secure. For example, electronic circuitry may be attached to the exterior of the vehicle, where the electronic circuitry may be within a threshold distance (e.g. one inch, three inches, six inches, one foot, three feet, etc.) of the POS terminal. The tokenized card number may be transmitted from the vehicle head unit to the electronic circuitry and then to the POS terminal.

Claims (44)

1 . A computer-implemented method for making payments from a financial account of a user via wireless communication between a vehicle payment application executing on one or more processors on a head unit of a vehicle and a merchant communication terminal associated with a merchant location, the computer-implemented method comprising:

receiving, by one or more processors executing a vehicle payment application on a head unit of a vehicle, a selection of a user control for initiating a payment process at a merchant location via a financial account;

authenticating, by the one or more processors executing the vehicle payment application on the vehicle head unit, the user to ensure the user is authorized to use the financial account by receiving a facial scan from the user; and

transmitting, by the one or more processors executing the vehicle payment application on the vehicle head unit, a request to purchase goods or services to a merchant communication terminal via a short-range communication link, the request including an indication of a method of payment associated with the financial account.

2 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

presenting, by the one or more processors executing the vehicle payment application on the vehicle head unit, a financial card entry screen including one or more user controls for receiving financial data for the financial account.

3 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein authenticating the user further includes:

receiving, by the one or more processors executing the vehicle payment application, biometric information from the user; and

comparing, by the one or more processors, the biometric information to stored biometric information for an authorized user.

4 . The computer-implemented method of claim 3 , wherein the biometric information includes at least one of: a fingerprint scan, a retina scan, or a voice scan.

5 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein authenticating the user further includes:

receiving, by the one or more processors executing the vehicle payment application, login information or mobile device identification information; and

comparing, by the one or more processors, the login information or the mobile device identification information to a stored unique identifier for an authorized user.

6 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the merchant communication terminal is a point of sale (POS) terminal selected from the group consisting of a fuel station, drive-thru, dry cleaners, restaurant, coffee shop, grocery store, pharmacy, and vehicle repair shop.

The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein transmitting the request includes transmitting, by the one or more processors executing the vehicle payment application, the request to purchase goods or services to the merchant communication terminal via a very short-range communication link.

8 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the vehicle payment application executes on an operating system native to the vehicle head unit.

A computer system configured for making payments from a financial account of a user via wireless communication between a vehicle payment application executing on one or more processors on a head unit of a vehicle and a merchant communication terminal associated with a merchant location, the computer system comprising one or more processors, transceivers, and/or sensors configured to:

receive, by a vehicle payment application on a head unit of a vehicle, a selection of a user control for initiating a payment process at a merchant location via a financial account;

authenticate, by the vehicle payment application on the vehicle head unit, the user to ensure the user is authorized to use the financial account by receiving a facial scan from the user; and

transmit, by the vehicle payment application on the vehicle head unit, a request to purchase goods or services to a merchant communication terminal via a short-range communication link, the request including an indication of a method of payment associated with the financial account.

10 . The computer system of claim 9 , wherein the computer system is further configured to:

present, by the vehicle payment application, a financial card entry screen including one or more user controls for receiving financial data for the financial account.

11 . The computer system of claim 9 , wherein to authenticate the user, the computer system is further configured to:

receive, by the vehicle payment application, biometric information from the user; and

compare the biometric information to stored biometric information for an authorized user.

12 . The computer system of claim 11 , wherein the biometric information includes at least one of: a fingerprint scan, a retina scan, or a voice scan.

13 . The computer system of claim 9 , wherein to authenticate the user, the computer system is further configured to:

receive, by the vehicle payment application, login information or mobile device identification information; and

compare the login information or the mobile device identification information to a stored unique identifier for an authorized user.

14 . The computer system of claim 9 , wherein the merchant communication terminal is a point of sale (POS) terminal selected from the group consisting of a fuel station, drive-thru, dry cleaners, restaurant, coffee shop, grocery store, pharmacy, and vehicle repair shop.

15 . The computer system of claim 9 , wherein the request to purchase goods or services is transmitted to the merchant communication terminal via a very short-range communication link.

16 . A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing thereon a set of instructions for making payments from a financial account of a user via wireless communication between a vehicle payment application executing on one or more processors on a head unit of a vehicle and a merchant communication terminal associated with a merchant location, the set of instructions when executed on one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to:

receive, by a vehicle payment application on a head unit of a vehicle, a selection of a user control for initiating a payment process at a merchant location via a financial account;

authenticate, by the vehicle payment application on the vehicle head unit, the user to ensure the user is authorized to use the financial account by receiving a facial scan from the user; and

transmit, by the vehicle payment application on the vehicle head unit, a request to purchase goods or services to a merchant communication terminal via a short-range communication link, the request including an indication of a method of payment associated with the financial account.

17 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of 16 , wherein the set of instructions further causes the one or more processors to:

present, by the vehicle payment application, a financial card entry screen including one or more user controls for receiving financial data for the financial account.

18 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of 16 , wherein to authenticate the user, the set of instructions further causes the one or more processors to:

receive, by the vehicle payment application, biometric information from the user; and

compare the biometric information to stored biometric information for an authorized user.

19 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of 18 , wherein the biometric information includes at least one of: a fingerprint scan, a retina scan, or a voice scan.

20 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of 16 , wherein to authenticate the user, the set of instructions further causes the one or more processors to:

receive, by the vehicle payment application, login information or mobile device identification information; and

compare the login information or the mobile device identification information to a stored unique identifier for an authorized user.
