Abstract

A multi-functional slurry processing system (“VARCOR”) and associated methods is disclosed. The present examples provide a multi-functional slurry processing system incorporating systems and methods for separating liquid and solid components in slurries. In particular the systems and methods described herein produce clean water, dried solids, and potential concentration of desirable constituents with a boiling point lower than water. At least one example of the multi-functional slurry processing system provides a self-contained processing facility configured to efficiently convert high water-content slurries into its constituent solid and liquid fractions and subsequently generating and collecting clean water and concentrating desirable constituents with a boiling point lower than water. The multi-functional slurry processing system advantageously applies thermodynamic principles in a system which may include various combinations of a preheater, a degassing unit, a dryer, a steam filter, a compressor, a concentrating tower, and a condensation unit.

Claims (35)

2 . A method for processing a wet slurry, the method comprising:

heating the wet slurry to produce a heated slurry;

degassing the heated slurry to produce a degassed slurry;

drying the degassed slurry via a dryer to produce a slurry vapor and dried solids;

condensing the slurry vapor to produce a concentrated slurry vapor; and

directing the concentrated slurry vapor away from the dryer.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the wet slurry is a manure waste comprising at least one of potassium, phosphorus, or organic nitrogen.

4 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the degassed slurry includes a lower concentration of non-condensables than the heated slurry.

5 . The method of claim 2 , wherein heating the wet slurry comprises heating the wet slurry via a dryer condensate.

6 . The method of claim 2 , wherein heating the wet slurry comprises directing a dryer condensate to a hot side of a preheater.

7 . The method of claim 2 , wherein heating the wet slurry comprises producing a cooled dryer condensate.

8 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising, prior to drying the degassed slurry, receiving the degassed slurry at a cold side of the dryer.

9 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the heated slurry has a temperature of at least 363 Kelvin.

10 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the heated slurry has a pressure of at most 120 kilopascals.

11 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the dried solids have a total solids concentration of at least 80%.

12 . The method of claim 2 , wherein drying the degassed slurry comprises drying the degassed slurry via a pressurized heat source.

13 . The method of claim 2 , wherein drying the degassed slurry comprises transferring heat from a pressurized heat source to the degassed slurry.

14 . The method of claim 2 , wherein condensing the slurry vapor comprises passively condensing the slurry vapor.

15 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the concentrated slurry vapor has a greater concentration of low-boiling point constituents than the slurry vapor, and wherein the low-boiling point constituents are at least one of ammonia or alcohol.

16 . The method of claim 2 , wherein drying the degassed slurry comprises introducing a steam into the dryer, and wherein the steam is produced by compressing a steam output recovered from the dryer.

17 . A method for processing a wet slurry, the method comprising:

heating the wet slurry to produce a heated slurry;

drying the heated slurry to produce a slurry vapor;

condensing the slurry vapor to produce a concentrated slurry vapor; and

condensing the concentrated slurry vapor to produce a concentrated solution.

18 . The method of claim 17 , wherein drying the heated slurry comprises producing a dryer condensate, the method further comprising heating the wet slurry via the dryer condensate.

19 . The method of claim 17 , wherein condensing the concentrated slurry vapor comprises condensing the concentrated slurry vapor at least once to produce the concentrated solution.

20 . The method of claim 17 wherein drying the heated slurry comprises producing a steam output, the method further comprising:

compressing the steam output; and

directing the steam output into the dryer.

21 . A method for producing a concentrated slurry vapor, the method comprising:

heating a slurry to produce a slurry vapor and dried solids, wherein the dried solids are output at a dryer;

condensing the slurry vapor to produce the concentrated slurry vapor; and

directing the concentrated slurry vapor away from the dryer.
