Abstract

A rechargeable flashlight configured to communicate via a wireless network, and associated systems and methods are disclosed herein. In some embodiments, the rechargeable flashlight includes a light emitter configured to generate light outputted by the flashlight and an imaging device configured to capture environmental data from an area exposed to the output light. The flashlight can also include a cylindrical handheld main body that includes one or more functionally distinct modules configured to be detachably coupled together to provide coordinated operation. The flashlight can also include at least one user-controlled switch operable to control operation of one or more of the interchangeable cylindrical modules.

Claims (43)

1 . A portable surveillance device, comprising:

a surveillance module including a camera and a microphone;

at least one user-controlled switch;

a controller in communication with the surveillance module and configured to cause the portable surveillance device to communicate via a wireless network, wherein the controller has

at least one processor; and

storage coupled to the at least one processor, the storage storing instructions that, when executed, cause the portable surveillance device to perform actions, including:

in response to operation of the at least one user-controlled switch,

automatically capturing data the portable surveillance device,

transmitting, via the wireless network, the captured data for viewing by an emergency services center,

establishing two-way voice communication with the emergency services center, and

in response to operation of the at least one user-controlled switch, activating the camera.

2 . The portable surveillance device of claim 1 , wherein the actions further include at least one of

emitting a sound notification indicating a contact emergency service protocol;

emitting a sound alert; or

causing the portable surveillance device to emit light repeatedly.

3 . The portable surveillance device of claim 1 , wherein the actions include

obtaining position tracking data for the portable surveillance device; and

transmitting the position tracking data for the emergency services center.

4 . The portable surveillance device of claim 1 , wherein the actions include activating an alarm configure to emit a sound.

5 . The portable surveillance device of claim 1 , wherein the at least one user-controlled switch includes

a first user-controlled switch configured to establish two-way voice communication with the emergency services center, and

a second user-controlled switch configured to control operation of the camera.

6 . The portable surveillance device of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to control the portable surveillance device based on user-inputted information inputted into a mobile device that communicates with the portable surveillance device.

7 . The portable surveillance device of claim 1 , wherein the actions include communicating with a mobile device programmed to wirelessly control operation of the portable surveillance device.

8 . The portable surveillance device of claim 1 , wherein the actions include pairing with a mobile device configured to wirelessly control operation of the portable surveillance device.

9 . A portable surveillance device with two-way voice communication, the portable surveillance device comprising:

a surveillance module including an environmental data device configured to obtain environment data that includes image data and non-image data;

at least one user-controlled switch configured to control collection of the environmental data device while the portable surveillance device is carried by a user;

a controller in communication with the surveillance module and configured to cause the portable surveillance device to communicate via a wireless network, wherein the controller has

at least one processor; and

storage coupled to the at least one processor, the storage storing instructions that, when executed, cause the portable surveillance device to perform actions, including:

obtaining, via the wireless network, a newly available software update for the portable surveillance device, wherein the portable surveillance device is configured to install the newly available software update after performing an authenticating routine, and

transmitting the environment data to a remote service center automatically by

capturing the image data using the environmental data device,

transmitting, via the wireless network, the image data for viewing by the remote service center, and

establishing two-way voice communication with the remote service center.

10 . The portable surveillance device of claim 9 , wherein the environmental data device includes a camera and a microphone.

11 . The portable surveillance device of claim 9 , wherein the controller is programmed to store

detection accuracy settings,

sensitivity settings, and

alert settings.

12 . The portable surveillance device of claim 9 , wherein the controller is programmed to autonomously obtain and analyze the environment data without network connectivity for object detection.

13 . The portable surveillance device of claim 9 , wherein the controller stores a mesh protocol and is programmed to communicate with one or more other devices according to the mesh protocol.
