Abstract

Pendent vertical sidewall fire protection sprinklers, systems and methods for the protection of windows are provided. The sprinklers include a fluid deflection member with an impact surface and an adjacent retention surface having one or more arcuate surface profiles to define a fluid throw channel. The sprinklers and their system installation provide for a maximum sprinkler-to-sprinkler spacing that ranges from over eight feet to fifteen feet (8+ft. to 15 ft.).

Claims (14)

1 - 20 . (canceled)

21 . A method of window fire protection comprising:

obtaining a plurality of window sprinklers each having a fluid deflection member; and

providing the window sprinklers for installation in a pendent orientation with each fluid deflection member being oriented to confront a glass pane that is non-operable and has a height of thirteen feet and discharge fluid toward the glass pane and laterally to define a sprinkler-to-sprinkler spacing between the sprinkler ranging from over eight feet to fifteen feet (8-15 ft.).

22 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the obtaining includes testing one of the window sprinklers in a fluid distribution test including locating the window sprinkler to confront a window arrangement including at least one glass pane supported between an upper window frame and a lower window frame with a plurality of collection buckets disposed below the window frame for collecting fluid impacting the fluid for determining a distribution density.

23 . The method of claim 22 , wherein fluid flows from the window sprinkler at 15 GPM for three minutes (3 min.) to define a lateral throw of 13 ft. with an average fluid distribution density of about 0.1 GPM/sq. ft. over a lateral distance 6-12 ft from the sprinkler.

24 . The method of claim 22 , wherein fluid flows from the window sprinkler at 15 GPM for thirty minutes (30 min.) to define a lateral throw of 13 ft with an average fluid distribution density of about 0.09 GPM/sq. ft. over a lateral distance 6-12 ft from the sprinkler.

25 . The method of claim 22 , wherein fluid flows from the window sprinkler at 20 GPM for three minutes (3 min.) to define a lateral throw of 15 ft. with an average fluid distribution density of about 0.1 GPM/sq. ft. over a lateral distance 6-12 ft from the sprinkler.

26 . The method of claim 22 , wherein fluid flows from the window sprinkler at 20 GPM for thirty minutes (30 min.) to define a lateral throw of 17 ft. with an average fluid distribution density of about 0.07 GPM/sq. ft. over a lateral distance 6 -16 ft from the sprinkler.

27 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the providing for installation includes locating each sprinkler axis from a vertical barrier at a spacing that ranges from ⅓ of a foot to seven feet (⅓ ft.-7 ft.).

28 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the providing for installation includes providing a maximum sprinkler-to-sprinkler spacing that ranges from ten to fifteen feet (10-15 ft.).

29 . The method of claim 28 , wherein the providing for installation includes providing a maximum sprinkler-to-sprinkler spacing that is twelve feet (12 ft.).

30 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the providing for installation includes providing each sprinkler with a minimum supply of fluid flow of fifteen gallons per minute (15 GPM).

31 - 43 . (canceled).
