Abstract

A sacroiliac joint implant system includes a primary implant configured to be received in a sacroiliac joint of a patient and a secondary implant configured to couple with the primary implant. The primary implant includes a body extending from a proximal end to a distal end and a plurality of threads extending from the body. The secondary implant includes a first anchor configured to anchor within a sacrum of the patient and a second anchor configured to anchor within an ilium of the patient.

Claims (34)

1 . A joint implant system, comprising:

a first implant configured to be received in a joint of a patient, the first implant comprising a body comprising a threaded central opening, a first lateral window, and a second lateral window; and

a second implant comprising:

a head;

a shank extending distally from the head; and

a plurality of threads extending from the shank;

wherein the threaded central opening of the first implant is configured to receive the head of the second implant; and

wherein the first lateral window and the second lateral window are configured to be positioned lateral to and on opposing sides of the second implant when the second implant is received within the threaded central opening.

2 . The joint implant system of claim 1 , wherein the first implant is configured to be received within a facet joint of the patient.

3 . The joint implant system of claim 1 , wherein the first lateral window and the second lateral window are configured to receive bone graft.

4 . The joint implant system of claim 1 , wherein the second implant comprises a plurality of passages, each of the plurality of passages extending between a first window on a first side of the shank on a second window on a second side of the shank.

5 . The joint implant system of claim 4 , wherein at least one of the plurality of passages is positioned to align with the first lateral window and the second lateral window.

6 . The joint implant system of claim 4 , wherein at least one of the plurality of passages is perpendicular to a central axis of the shank.

7 . The joint implant system of claim 1 , wherein the first implant comprises a first wedge-shaped anchor and a second wedge-shaped anchor, wherein the first lateral opening is positioned within the first wedge-shaped anchor and the second lateral opening is positioned within the second wedge-shaped anchor.

8 . The joint implant system of claim 1 , further comprising a joint locator configured to be advanced into the joint.

9 . The joint implant system of claim 1 , further comprising a cutting tool configured to form a pilot hole at the joint.

10 . A method for implanting a joint implant system, comprising:

making an incision;

advancing a first implant through the incision into a joint of the patient, the first implant comprising a body comprising a threaded central opening, a first lateral window, and a second lateral window;

advancing a second implant through the incision and into the threaded central opening of the first implant, the second implant comprising:

a head;

a shank extending distally from the head; and

a plurality of threads extending from the shank;

wherein the first lateral window and the second lateral window are positioned lateral to and on opposing sides of the second implant when the second implant is received within the threaded central opening.

11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the joint is a facet joint.

12 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the first lateral window and the second lateral window house bone graft material.

13 . The method of claim 10 , further comprising advancing a joint locator through the incision and into the joint prior to advancing the first implant.

14 . The method of claim 13 , further comprising advancing a guidewire into the joint, wherein advancing the joint locator into the joint comprises advancing the joint locator over the guidewire.

15 . The method of claim 14 , further comprising advancing a guide over the joint locator and to the joint.

16 . The method of claim 15 , further comprising advancing a cutting tool through the guide to form a pilot hole.

17 . The method of claim 10 , further comprising decorticating bone at the joint prior to advancing the first implant.

18 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the second implant comprises a plurality of passages, each of the plurality of passages extending between a first window on a first side of the shank on a second window on a second side of the shank.

19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein at least one of the plurality of passages is positioned to align with the first lateral window and the second lateral window.

20 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the first implant comprises a first wedge-shaped anchor and a second wedge-shaped anchor, wherein the first lateral opening is positioned within the first wedge-shaped anchor and the second lateral opening is positioned within the second wedge-shaped anchor.
