Method And System For Closure Of Cardiovascular Apertures
Methods and devices for closing tissue apertures in a patient, such as PFO, are disclosed. A suturing device is used to place a suture through areas of tissue that are intended to be closed. Pledgets or buttons can be placed on the suture and each side of the tissue to help maintain the closure.
1 . A catheter system for suture delivery, comprising:
a first tubular passage having a curved distal end portion and a first distal opening connected to the first tubular passage and that is located at an end of the curved distal end portion; the first distal opening facing in a proximal direction;
a second passage having a second distal opening spaced apart from the first distal opening by a gap; and,
a grasping device that radially contracts around a suture when the suture is advanced out of the first distal opening and into the gap.
2 . The catheter system of claim 1 , wherein said grasping device further comprises a mesh.
3 . The catheter system of claim 2 , wherein the mesh compresses or contracts around the suture to engage the suture.
4 . The catheter system of claim 2 , wherein the mesh is a generally flat disc.
5 . The catheter system of claim 2 , wherein the mesh is a tubular shape.
6 . The catheter system of claim 2 , further comprising a control wire extending from a proximal end of the device and that is connected to the mesh; wherein movement of the control wire controls contraction of the mesh.
7 . The catheter system of claim 1 , wherein said grasping device further comprises an arm movable within the second passage and extendable distally out of the second distal opening.
8 . The catheter system of claim 7 , wherein the arm has a bent shape memory configuration.
9 . The catheter system of claim 1 , wherein the second distal opening is distally facing.
10 . The catheter system of claim 1 , wherein the second distal opening opens sideways.
11 . A catheter system for suture delivery, comprising:
a first tube having a flexible distal end portion having a straight configuration when retracted into the catheter system and a self-biased curved configuration when advanced out of the catheter system; the first tube having a first distal opening that is located at an end of the flexible distal end portion; the first distal opening facing in a proximal direction in the self-biased curved configuration;
a second passage having a second distal opening spaced apart from the first distal opening; and,
a grasping device that engages a suture when the suture is advanced proximally out of the first distal opening.
12 . The catheter system of claim 11 , wherein the grasping device radially contracts around the suture.
13 . The catheter system of claim 11 , wherein said grasping device further comprises a mesh.
14 . The catheter system of claim 13 , wherein the mesh compresses or contracts around the suture to engage the suture.
15 . The catheter system of claim 13 , wherein the mesh is a generally flat disc.
16 . The catheter system of claim 13 , wherein the mesh is a tubular shape.
17 . The catheter system of claim 13 , further comprising a control wire extending from a proximal end of the device and that is connected to the mesh; wherein movement of the control wire controls contraction of the mesh.
18 . The catheter system of claim 11 , wherein said grasping device further comprises an arm movable within the second passage and extendable distally out of the second distal opening; and wherein the arm has a bent shape memory configuration.
19 . The catheter system of claim 11 , wherein the second distal opening opens sideways or opens distally.
20 . A method of suture delivery, comprising:
advancing a suture through a first tubular passage;
advancing the suture through a curved distal end portion of the first tubular passage and out of a first distal opening connected to the first tubular passage towards a distal direction;
radially contracting the suture with a grasping device; and,
pulling the suture into a second distal opening of a second passage with the grasping device and in a proximal direction.
