LAYERED EDIBLE PRODUCT FOR MULTI-STAGE DOSING OF MULTI-FUNCTION ACTIVE PHARMACEUTICAL INGREDIENTS
A layered edible product includes a core and at least one active layer that is supported by the core. The at least one active layer can include a respective API. The edible product is configured to be placed against a mucosal surface of the oral cavity, which causes the respective API of the at least one active layer to enter the bloodstream through the mucosal surface. The core can be ingested gastrointestinally or can be dissolvable against the mucosal surface or both. The core can include a core API, or optionally the core can be API-free.
1 . A layered edible product comprising:
a gummy core;
at least one active layer disposed over the core, the at least one active layer comprising a respective at least one API; and
a partition layer disposed between the gummy core and the at least one active layer.
2 . The layered edible product of claim 1 , wherein the at least one API comprises one of a prescription drug and an over-the-counter drug.
3 . The layered edible product of claim 1 , wherein the gummy core is devoid of API.
4 . The layered edible product of claim 2 , wherein the gummy core comprises a core API.
5 . The layered edible product of claim 2 , further comprising a wrapper that surrounds the at least one active layer.
6 . The layered edible product of claim 5 , wherein the wrapper comprises a respective API.
7 . The layered edible product of claim 5 , wherein the wrapper is inert.
8 . The layered edible product of claim 1 , wherein the at least one active layer also defines an innermost active layer such that no active layer is disposed between the at least one active layer and the gummy core.
9 . The layered edible product of claim 1 , wherein the core and the at least one active layer have different flavor profiles.
10 . The layered edible product of claim 1 , wherein the partition layer is an active partition layer containing a respective API.
11 . The layered edible product of claim 1 , wherein the partition layer is inert.
12 . The layered edible product of claim 1 , wherein the partition layer is a first partition layer, the layered edible product further comprising a second partition layer on the at least one active layer, such that the at least one active layer is disposed between the first partition layer and the second partition layer.
13 . A layered edible product comprising:
an edible body including:
a gummy core; and
an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API); and
an edible wrapper that surrounds the edible body.
14 . The layered edible product of claim 13 , wherein the gummy core defines the API.
15 . The layered edible product of claim 13 , wherein the API comprises one of a pharmaceutical drug and an over-the-counter drug.
16 . The layered edible product of claim 13 , wherein the gummy core is inert.
17 . The layered edible product of claim 13 , further comprising at least one active layer between the core and the wrapper, wherein the at least one active layer comprises a respective at least one API.
18 . The layered edible product of claim 17 , wherein the at least one API comprises one of a pharmaceutical drug and an over-the-counter drug.
19 . The layered edible product of claim 13 , further comprising a partition layer disposed over the gummy core.
20 . The layered edible product of claim 19 , wherein the partition layer is active.
21 . The layered edible product of claim 19 , wherein the partition layer is inert.
22 . The layered edible product of claim 19 , further comprising at least one active layer that includes the at least one API, wherein the partition layer is disposed between the core and the at least one active layer.
