Abstract

A ballistic resistant panel assembly, includes a plurality of ballistic resistant plies positioned in a stack. The assembly further includes: a binding layer, which includes at least two layers of material, wherein a first portion of the binding layer extends along and overlying a first ply in the stack, a second portion of the binding layer extends from the first portion of the binding layer and extends along peripheral edges of a less than all of the plurality of ballistic resistant plies in the stack; and a third portion of the binding layer extends from the second portion of the binding layer and extends along a second ballistic resistant ply in the stack, such that the second ballistic resistant ply is positioned between the first ballistic resistant ply and the third portion of the binding layer.

Claims (72)

1 . A ballistic resistant panel assembly, comprising:

a plurality of ballistic resistant plies positioned in a stack;

a binding layer, which comprises at least two layers of material wherein:

a first portion of the binding layer extends along and overlying a first ballistic resistant ply in the stack;

a second portion of the binding layer extends from the first portion of the binding layer and extends along peripheral edges of a less than all of the plurality of the ballistic resistant plies in the stack; and

a third portion of the binding layer extends from the second portion of the binding layer and extends along a second ballistic resistant ply in the stack, such that the second ballistic resistant ply is positioned between the first ballistic resistant ply and the third portion of the binding layer.

2 . The ballistic resistant panel assembly of claim 1 , wherein the binding layer comprises a nylon, an aramid, or a polyethylene.

3 . The ballistic resistant panel assembly of claim 1 , further includes a plurality of stitches which extend through the first portion and the third portion of the binding layer and through the first ballistic resistant ply and the second ballistic resistant ply of the stack.

4 . The ballistic resistant panel assembly of claim 3 , wherein a thread member of the plurality of stitches comprises a nylon, an aramid or a polyethylene.

5 . The ballistic resistant panel assembly of claim 1 , wherein the second portion of the binding layer extends about a perimeter of the ballistic resistant panel assembly overlying the peripheral edges of the less than all of the ballistic resistant plies of the stack.

6 . A method for fabricating a ballistic resistant panel assembly, comprising the steps of:

positioning a plurality of ballistic resistant plies in a stack;

placing a binding layer, which comprises at least two layers of material, wherein:

a first portion of the binding layer extends along and overlies a first ballistic resistant ply, of the plurality of ballistic resistant plies in the stack;

a second portion of the binding layer extends from the first portion of the binding layer and extends from the first portion of the binding layer and extends along peripheral edges of a less than all of the plurality of ballistic resistant plies in the stack; and

a third portion of the binding layer extends from the second portion of the binding layer and extends along a second ballistic resistant ply in the stack, such that the second ballistic resistant ply is positioned between the first ballistic resistant ply and the third portion of the binding layer.

7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the binding layer comprises a nylon, an aramid, or a polyethylene.

8 . The method of claim 6 , further includes placing a plurality of stitches which extend through the first portion and the third portion of the binding layer and through the first ballistic resistant ply and the second ballistic resistant ply in the stack.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein a thread member of the plurality of stitches comprises a nylon, an aramid or a polyethylene.

10 . The method of claim 6 , wherein the second portion of the binding layer extends about a perimeter of the ballistic resistant panel assembly overlying the peripheral edges of the less than all of the ballistic resistant plies in the stack.

11 . A ballistic resistant panel assembly, comprising:

a plurality of ballistic resistant plies positioned in a stack;

a binding layer, which comprises at least two layers of material, wherein:

a first portion of the binding layer extends along and overlying a first ballistic resistant ply in the stack;

a second portion of the binding layer extends from the first portion of the binding layer and extends along peripheral edges of the ballistic resistant plies in the stack, wherein the second portion has a length positioned and extending only between shoulder portions of a front ballistic resistant panel assembly, and

a third portion of the binding layer extends from the second portion of the binding layer and extends along a last ballistic resistant ply in the stack, such that the last ballistic ply is positioned between the first ballistic resistant ply and the third portion of the binding layer.

12 . The ballistic resistant panel assembly of claim 11 , wherein the binding layer comprises a nylon, an aramid, or a polyethylene.

13 . The ballistic resistant panel assembly of claim 11 , further includes a plurality of stitches which extend through the first portion and the third portion of the binding layer and through the first ballistic resistant ply and the last ballistic resistant ply in the stack.

14 . The ballistic resistant panel assembly of claim 13 , wherein a thread member of the plurality of stitches comprises a nylon, an aramid, or a polyethylene.

15 . The ballistic resistant panel assembly of claim 13 , wherein the plurality of stitches form a configuration which includes rows of stitches which extend spaced apart from one another and spaced apart from a peripheral stack edge of the plurality of ballistic resistant plies.

16 . A method for fabricating a ballistic resistant panel assembly, comprising the steps of:

positioning a plurality of ballistic resistant plies in a stack; and

placing a binding layer, which comprises at least two layers of material, wherein:

a first portion of the binding layer extends along and overlies a first ballistic resistant ply of the plurality of ballistic resistant plies in the stack;

a second portion of the binding layer extends from the first portion of the binding layer and extends along peripheral edges of the plurality of ballistic resistant plies in the stack, wherein the second portion has a length positioned and extending only between shoulder portions of a front ballistic resistant panel assembly; and

a third portion of the binding layer extends from the second portion of the binding layer and extends along a last ballistic resistant ply in the stack, such that the last ballistic resistant ply is positioned between the first ballistic resistant ply and the third portion of the binding layer.

17 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the binding layer comprises a nylon, an aramid, or a polyethylene.

18 . The method of claim 16 , further includes placing a plurality of stitches which extend through the first portion and the third portion of the binding layer and through the first ballistic resistant ply and the last ballistic resistant ply of the stack.

19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein a thread member of the plurality of stitches comprises a nylon, an aramid, or a polyethylene.

20 . The method of claim 18 , wherein the placing of the plurality of stitches form a configuration which includes rows of stitches which extend spaced apart from one another and spaced apart from a peripheral stack edge of the plurality of ballistic resistant plies.

21 . A ballistic resistant panel assembly, comprising:

a plurality of ballistic resistant plies positioned in a stack;

a binding layer, wherein:

a first portion of the binding layer extends along and overlying a first ballistic resistant ply in the stack;

a second portion of the binding layer extends from the first portion of the binding layer and extends along peripheral edges of the ballistic resistant plies of the stack, wherein the second portion has a length positioned and extending along less than a full perimeter of the ballistic resistant panel assembly; and

a third portion of the binding layer extends from the second portion of the binding layer and extends along a last ballistic resistant ply in the stack, such that the last ballistic resistant ply is positioned between the first ballistic resistant ply and the third portion of the binding layer.

22 . The ballistic resistant panel assembly of claim 21 , wherein the binding layer comprises a nylon, an aramid, or a polyethylene.

23 . The ballistic resistant panel assembly of claim 21 , further includes a plurality of stitches which extend through the first portion and the third portion of the binding layer and through the first ballistic resistant ply and the last ballistic resistant ply in the stack.

24 . The ballistic resistant panel assembly of claim 23 , wherein a thread member of the plurality of stitches comprises a nylon, an aramid, or a polyethylene.

25 . The ballistic resistant panel assembly of claim 23 , wherein the plurality of stitches form a configuration which includes rows of stitches which extend spaced apart from one another and spaced apart from a peripheral stack edge of the plurality of ballistic resistant plies.

26 . A method for fabricating a ballistic resistant panel assembly, comprising the steps of:

positioning a plurality of ballistic resistant plies in a stack; and

placing a binding layer, wherein:

a first portion of the binding layer extends along and overlying a first ballistic resistant ply of the plurality of ballistic resistant plies in the stack;

a second portion of the binding layer extends from the first portion of the binding layer and extends along peripheral edges of the plurality of ballistic resistant plies in the stack, wherein the second portion has a length positioned and extending along less than a full perimeter of the ballistic resistant panel assembly; and

a third portion of the binding layer extends from the second portion of the binding layer and extends along a last ballistic resistant ply in the stack, such that the last ballistic resistant ply is positioned between the first ballistic resistant ply and the third portion of the binding layer.

27 . A ballistic resistant panel assembly, comprising:

a plurality of ballistic resistant plies positioned in a stack;

a binding layer, which comprises at least two layers of material, wherein:

a first portion of the binding layer extends along and overlying a first ballistic resistant ply in the stack;

a second portion of the binding layer extends from the first portion of the binding layer and extends along peripheral edges of the ballistic resistant plies of the stack, wherein the second portion has a length positioned and extending along less than a full perimeter of the ballistic resistant panel assembly; and

a third portion of the binding layer extends from the second portion of the binding layer and extends along a last ballistic resistant ply in the stack, such that the last ballistic resistant ply is positioned between the first ballistic resistant ply and the third portion of the binding layer.

28 . The ballistic resistant panel assembly of claim 27 , wherein the binding layer comprises a nylon, an aramid, or a polyethylene.

29 . The ballistic resistant panel assembly of claim 27 , further includes a plurality of stitches which extend through the first portion and the third portion of the binding layer and through the first ballistic resistant ply and the last ballistic resistant ply in the stack.

30 . The ballistic resistant panel assembly of claim 29 , wherein a thread member of the plurality of stitches comprises a nylon, an aramid, or a polyethylene.

31 . The ballistic resistant panel assembly of claim 29 , wherein the plurality of stitches form a configuration which includes rows of stitches which extend spaced apart from one another and spaced apart from a peripheral stack edge of the plurality of ballistic resistant plies.

32 . A method for fabricating a ballistic resistant panel assembly, comprising the steps of:

positioning a plurality of ballistic resistant plies in a stack; and

placing a binding layer, which comprises at least two layers of material, wherein:

a first portion of the binding layer extends along and overlying a first ballistic resistant ply of the plurality of ballistic resistant plies in the stack;

a second portion of the binding layer extends from the first portion of the binding layer and extends along peripheral edges of the plurality of ballistic resistant plies in the stack, wherein the second portion has a length positioned and extending along less than a full perimeter of the ballistic resistant panel assembly; and

a third portion of the binding layer extends from the second portion of the binding layer and extends along a last ballistic resistant ply in the stack, such that the last ballistic resistant ply is positioned between the first ballistic resistant ply and the third portion of the binding layer.
