Abstract

A wearable device, such as a finger ring worn by a user, communicates information about a user to a reader that uses the information in order to perform a transaction. Such wearable device may be conveniently carried by and accessible to the user such that utilization of the device for the transaction is less burdensome for the user, thereby encouraging use of the device for particular transactions. Indeed, in some cases, such as when the device is implemented as a finger ring or other type of jewelry, the user may be encouraged to carry the device in an exposed manner such that it is readily available for the transaction without the user having to search in a wallet, pocket, or purse for the device.

Claims (53)

1 . (canceled).

2 . A wearable device, comprising:

a bracelet configured to be worn on a wrist of a user, the bracelet having an inner surface dimensioned to engage the wrist of the user;

at least one sensor positioned in the bracelet and configured to detect physical motion of the bracelet and generate motion data based on the physical motion;

at least one embedded antenna positioned in the bracelet, wherein the at least one embedded antenna is communicatively coupled to the at least one sensor; and

electrical circuitry positioned in the bracelet and coupled to the at least one embedded antenna and the at least one sensor, the electrical circuitry configured to:

process the motion data for transmission to a reader in association with a transaction to be completed for the user using the bracelet; and

wirelessly transmit, via the at least one embedded antenna, to the reader, information associated with the user including the motion data, the information associated with the user and the motion data representing the physical motion triggering a specific action related to a transaction performed by the reader.

3 . The wearable device of claim 2 , wherein the electrical circuitry is further configured to detect a magnetic field generated by the reader, and to interpret the physical motion as an authorization input for the specific action when the motion data is generated within a time window relative to detection of the magnetic field.

4 . The wearable device of claim 2 , wherein the physical motion is at least one of (i) a handwave by the user, (ii) a rotation of the bracelet by a defined angle, or (iii) a sequence

of taps of the bracelet, and wherein the specific action comprises at least one of approving a payment amount for the transaction, declining the payment amount, or modifying the payment amount.

5 . The wearable device of claim 2 , wherein the information associated with the user comprises a token corresponding to an account of the user, the token being configured to be forwarded by the reader to a server that maps the token to account information used to request approval of a payment for the transaction.

6 . The wearable device of claim 2 , further comprising:

a short-range wireless transceiver, wherein the electrical circuitry is configured to communicate with a mobile device via the short-range wireless transceiver to:

transmit, to the mobile device, prompt data configured to cause the mobile device to present a prompt, and

receive, in response to the prompt and from the mobile device, an authorization input that is included in the information associated with the user transmitted to the reader.

7 . The wearable device of claim 2 , further comprising a power source and an energy-harvesting antenna, wherein the electrical circuitry is configured to:

harvest energy from a magnetic field of the reader to charge the power source during a first time period, and

disable energy harvesting during a second time period.

8 . The wearable device of claim 2 , wherein the at least one sensor includes one or more of an accelerometer and a gyroscope.

9 . A method, comprising:

detecting physical motion of a bracelet worn on a wrist of a user, the bracelet having an inner surface dimensioned to engage the wrist of the user;

generating motion data based on the physical motion;processing, using electrical circuitry positioned in the bracelet, the motion data for transmission to a reader in association with a transaction to be completed for the user using the bracelet; andwirelessly transmitting to a reader, using at least one embedded antenna positioned in the bracelet, information associated with the user including the motion data, the information associated with the user and the motion data representing the physical motion triggering a specific action related to a transaction performed by the reader.

10 . The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

detecting a magnetic field generated by the reader, and

interpreting the physical motion as an authorization input for the specific action when the motion data is generated within a time window relative to detection of the magnetic field.

11 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the physical motion is at least one of (i) a handwave by the user, (ii) a rotation of the bracelet by a defined angle, or (iii) a sequence of taps of the bracelet, and wherein the specific action comprises at least one of approving a payment amount for the transaction, declining the payment amount, or modifying the payment amount.

12 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the information associated with the user comprises a token corresponding to an account of the user, the token being configured to be forwarded by the reader to a server that maps the token to account information used to request approval of a payment for the transaction.

13 . The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

communicating with a mobile device via a short-range wireless transceiver to:

transmit, to the mobile device, prompt data configured to cause the mobile device to present a prompt, and

receive, in response to the prompt and from the mobile device, an authorization input that is included in the information associated with the user transmitted to the reader.

14 . The method of claim 9 , further comprising:

harvesting energy from a magnetic field of the reader to charge a power source of the bracelet during a first time period, and

disabling energy harvesting during a second time period.

15 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the bracelet includes at least one sensor for detecting the physical motion, the at least one sensor being one or more of an accelerometer and a gyroscope.

16 . One or more non-transitory computer-readable media storing computer- readable instructions, which when executed by one or more processors of electrical circuitry positioned in a bracelet wearable on a wrist of a user, cause the bracelet to:

detect physical motion of the bracelet using at least one sensor, the bracelet having an inner surface dimensioned to engage the wrist of the user;

generate motion data based on the physical motion;

process the motion data for transmission to a reader in association with a transaction to be completed for the user using the bracelet; and

wirelessly transmit to a reader, using at least one embedded antenna positioned in the bracelet, information associated with the user including the motion data, the information associated with the user and the motion data representing the physical motion triggering a specific action related to a transaction performed by the reader.

17 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 16 ,

wherein execution of the computer-readable instructions further causes the bracelet to: detect a magnetic field generated by the reader, and

interpret the physical motion as an authorization input for the specific action when the motion data is generated within a time window relative to detection of the magnetic field.

18 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 16 , wherein the physical motion is at least one of (i) a handwave by the user, (ii) a rotation of the bracelet by a defined angle, or (iii) a sequence of taps of the bracelet, and wherein the specific action comprises at least one of approving a payment amount for the transaction, declining the payment amount, or modifying the payment amount.

19 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 16 , wherein execution of the computer-readable instructions further causes the bracelet to:
