Abstract

A system includes a sensor device, a repeater, and a control panel. The sensor device is in two-way communication with the repeater, and the repeater is in two-way communication with the control panel. The repeater includes a repeater module storing child table data and routing table data. The child table data stored by the repeater module, at the repeater, includes a sensor device address, sensor device descriptor, and/or sensor device status. The routing table data stored by the repeater module, at the repeater, includes channel operational information, such as a network ID, a first repeater operating channel of the repeater, a second repeater operating channel for the repeater different than the first repeater operating channel, a first information channel, and/or a second information channel different than the first information channel.

Claims (36)

1 . A system comprising:

a control panel configured to manage operation of a plurality of devices;

a repeater in wireless communication with the control panel; and

at least one device configured to selectively enroll with the system, wherein the at least one device is configured to:

scan a plurality of communication channels during an enrollment process;

determine, based on a communication characteristic, whether to associate with the control panel or the repeater as a parent device; and

transmit an enrollment request to the repeater when the repeater provides a stronger or more suitable communication path than the control panel, and wherein the repeater is configured to:

receive the enrollment request from the at least one device;

forward enrollment data corresponding to the at least one device to the control panel; and

enable the at least one device to operate within the system at a distance beyond a direct communication range of the control panel.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the repeater is configured to operate as a child of the control panel and as a parent to the at least one device.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the communication characteristic comprises signal strength determined across a plurality of channels.

4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one device is located outside a direct enrollment range of the control panel.

5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the repeater stores device profile data corresponding to the at least one device and mirrors operational data of the control panel.

6 . The system of claim 5 , wherein the mirrored operational data includes channel operation information and device association data.

7 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the system is configured such that communication behavior of the at least one device is substantially identical whether enrolled via the repeater or directly with the control panel.

8 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the repeater enables seamless migration of the at least one device between repeaters without requiring re-enrollment.

9 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the repeater is configured to store routing data and utilize the routing data to facilitate communication between the control panel and the at least one device.

10 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the repeater extends an effective operational range of the system by enabling indirect communication paths between the control panel and the at least one device.

11 . A method comprising:

initiating an enrollment process at a wireless device;

scanning, by the wireless device, a plurality of communication channels;

determining, based on at least one communication metric, whether a repeater or a control panel provides a preferred communication path;

selecting the repeater as a parent device when the repeater provides the preferred communication path;

transmitting an enrollment request from the wireless device to the repeater;

forwarding, by the repeater, enrollment data associated with the wireless device to the control panel; and

enabling operation of the wireless device within the system via the repeater such that the wireless device communicates with the control panel beyond a direct communication range.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein scanning comprises evaluating signal strength across multiple communication channels.

13 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising storing, at the repeater, device profile data associated with the wireless device.

14 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising transmitting enrollment acceptance data from the control panel to the repeater and from the repeater to the wireless device.

15 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the wireless device stores channel information associated with the repeater to facilitate subsequent communication.

16 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising enabling the wireless device to switch from a first repeater to a second repeater without re-enrollment.

17 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising synchronizing operational data between the control panel and the repeater.

18 . The method of claim 11 , wherein determining the preferred communication path includes identifying a channel having a highest signal strength.

19 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising maintaining consistent system behavior for the wireless device regardless of whether enrollment occurs via the repeater or directly with the control panel.

20 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising extending an effective communication boundary of the system by establishing a multi-hop communication path through the repeater.
