Abstract

In one instance, a safety device is mounted to an exterior side of a school bus. The safety device includes a stop sign portion having a first side, a second side, a third side, and a forth side, wherein the first and third sides are parallel to each other, and the second and forth sides are parallel to each other. A mounting bracket portion extends from the first side of the stop sign portion. A safety arm portion extends below the forth side of the stop sign portion and includes a first end and a second end. The stop sign portion, the mounting bracket portion, and the safety arm portion integrally form a monolithic structure. The safety device further includes a plurality of lights coupled to at least the safety arm portion.

Claims (35)

1 . A safety device for mounting on a school bus, the safety device comprising:

a stop sign portion having a first side, a second side, a third side, and a forth side, wherein the first and third sides are parallel to each other, and the second and forth sides are parallel to each other;

a mounting bracket portion extending from the first side of the stop sign portion, the mounting bracket portion configured for connecting to the school bus;

a safety arm portion extending below the forth side of the stop sign portion, the safety arm portion having a first end and a second end, with the second end cantilevered relative to the stop sign portion;

wherein the stop sign portion, the mounting bracket portion, and the safety arm portion integrally form a monolithic structure; and

a plurality of lights coupled to at least the safety arm portion.

2 . The safety device of claim 1 , further comprising an electronic message board attached to the safety arm portion.

3 . The safety device of claim 1 , further comprising electrical channels formed in an interior of the safety device for receiving electrical components.

4 . The safety device of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of lights include a first plurality of lights coupled to an exterior of the safety arm portion and a second plurality of lights coupled to an interior of the safety arm portion.

5 . The safety device of claim 1 , wherein the monolithic structure of the safety device is formed from a polymer.

6 . The safety device of claim 1 , wherein the monolithic structure of the safety device is formed from a polymer that is transparent or translucent.

7 . The safety device of claim 1 , wherein the monolithic structure of the safety device is formed from fiberglass.

8 . The safety device of claim 1 , further comprising reflective safety tape coupled to the safety arm portion.

9 . The safety device of claim 1 , wherein the monolithic structure has a longitudinal length between two and six feet.

10 . A safety device for mounting to a school bus, the safety device comprising:

a monolithic structure, the monolithic structure comprising:

a stop sign portion having a first side, a second side, a third side, and a forth side, wherein the first and third sides are parallel to each other, and the second and forth sides are parallel to each other;

a mounting bracket portion extending outward from the first side of the stop sign portion, the mounting bracket configured for attaching to the school bus; and

a safety arm portion extending downward from a forth side of the stop sign portion and outward relative to the third side of the stop sign portion, wherein the safety arm portion includes a first end and a second end, and wherein the second end of the safety arm portion is cantilevered from the stop sign portion; and

a plurality of lights coupled to at least the safety arm portion.

11 . The safety device of claim 10 , further comprising an electronic message board attached to the safety arm portion.

12 . The safety device of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of lights are LED lights.

13 . The safety device of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of lights include a first plurality of lights coupled to an exterior of the safety arm portion and a second plurality of lights coupled to an interior of the safety arm portion.

14 . The safety device of claim 10 , further comprising electrical channels formed in an interior of the safety device for receiving electrical components.

15 . The safety device of claim 10 , further comprising reflective safety tape coupled to the safety arm along a longitudinal length of the safety arm.

16 . The safety device of claim 10 , wherein the monolithic structure is formed from a polymer material that is transparent or translucent.

17 . The safety device of claim 10 , wherein the monolithic structure has a longitudinal length between two and six feet.

18 . A pivoting safety device for mounting to a school bus, the safety device comprising:

an integrally formed structure, the integrally formed structure having a proximal end and a distal end, the integrally formed structure comprising:

a mounting bracket portion for connecting to the school bus, wherein the mounting bracket portion is on the proximal end of the integrally formed structure;

a stop sign portion adjacent to the mounting bracket portion, the stop sign portion having a ;

a safety arm portion extending outward from the stop sign portion, wherein a portion of the safety arm portion forms the distal end of the integrally formed structure; and

a plurality of lights coupled to at least the safety arm portion.

19 . The safety device of claim 18 , wherein the safety device is formed from a transparent or translucent material.

20 . The safety device of claim 18 , further comprising and electronic message board attached to the safety arm portion.
