Abstract

There is disclosed a method of preparing an accommodating intraocular lens having an optical axis for subsequent implantation. The method comprises providing an intraocular lens having first and second viewing elements interconnected by plural members. At least a portion of the members are disposed from the optical axis by a distance greater than a periphery of at least one of the viewing elements. The distance is measured orthogonal to the optical axis. The method further comprises drawing the members inwardly toward the optical axis by relatively rotating the first and second viewing elements. The method further comprises increasing the separation between the viewing elements along the optical axis while drawing the members inwardly.

Claims (20)

1. A method of preparing an accommodating intraocular lens having an optical axis for subsequent implantation, said method comprising:

providing an intraocular lens having first and second viewing elements interconnected by plural members, at least a portion of said members being disposed from said optical axis by a distance greater than a periphery of at least one of said viewing elements, said distance being measured orthogonal to said optical axis;

drawing said members inwardly toward said optical axis by relatively rotating said first and second viewing elements; and

increasing the separation between said viewing elements along said optical axis while drawing said members inwardly.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein relatively rotating comprises relatively rotating said first and second viewing elements about said optical axis.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein drawing said members comprises positioning said members in close proximity to the periphery of at least one of the viewing elements.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising subsequently folding said viewing elements in half about an axis orthogonal to said optical axis.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising folding said viewing elements.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein folding said viewing elements comprises folding said viewing elements in half about an axis orthogonal to said optical axis.

7. A method of preparing an intraocular lens having an optical axis for subsequent implantation, said method comprising:

providing an intraocular lens having first and second viewing elements interconnected by plural members, at least a portion of said members being disposed from said optical axis by a distance greater than a periphery of at least one of said viewing elements, said distance being measured orthogonal to said optical axis;

providing a tool, said tool comprising a base and a rotor rotatably connected to said base;

fixing one of said first and second viewing elements with respect to said base;

fixing the other of said first and second viewing elements with respect to said rotor; and

drawing said members inwardly toward said optical axis by relatively rotating said first and second viewing elements, wherein relatively rotating said first and second viewing elements comprises rotating said rotor with respect to said base.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein relatively rotating comprises relatively rotating said first and second viewing elements about said optical axis.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein drawing said members comprises positioning said members in close proximity to the periphery of at least one of the viewing elements.

10. The method of claim 7 , further comprising subsequently folding said viewing elements in half about an axis orthogonal to said optical axis.

11. The method of claim 7 , further comprising folding said viewing elements.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein folding said viewing elements comprises folding said viewing elements in half about an axis orthogonal to said optical axis.
