Abstract

A shaped charge detonation booster comprises a tubular wall body of substantially constant outside diameter for enclosing an axial primer path that terminates with an enlarged main cavity volume. Preferably, the main cavity is positioned within the juncture plane of opposing shaped cutter charges. The tubular wall surrounding the primer path is substantially thicker than the tubular wall surrounding the main body and the explosive material within the main body is compacted more densely than the explosive material in the primer path.

Claims (14)

1. A booster assembly for detonating a high explosive shaped charge, said booster assembly comprising an integral metallic casement having a wall enclosure with a substantially cylindrical outside diameter of about 0.280″ or less surrounding a primer path and a main cavity, said primer path being charged with a high explosive material having decomposition shock properties sufficient to detonate a high explosive, said primer path high explosive having a first density to link said main cavity with a booster ignition point, said main cavity being charged with a second density of said high explosive wherein said first density is less than said second density and a first wall thickness of said wall enclosure surrounding said primer path is substantially greater than a second wall thickness of said wall enclosure surrounding said main cavity, a distal end plug of said tubular wall enclosure defining an end wall of said main cavity opposite of said primer path.

2. A shaped charge booster assembly as described by claim 1 wherein said first density is about 1.1 g/cc to about 1.2 g/cc.

3. A shaped charge booster assembly as described by claim 1 wherein said second density is about 1.5 g/cc to about 1.6 g/cc.

4. A booster assembly for detonating a high explosive shaped charge, said booster assembly comprising an integral metallic casement having a wall enclosure with a substantially cylindrical outside diameter of about 0.280″ or less surrounding a primer path and a main cavity, said primer path comprising an axial bore within said wall enclosure of about 0.045″ to about 0.080″ and said main cavity comprising an axial bore encompassed by an enclosure wall thickness of about 0.010″ thick or less, a distal end plug of said tubular wall enclosure defining an end wall of said main cavity opposite of said primer path, said primer path being charged with high explosive material having decomposition shock properties sufficient to detonate a high explosive, said primer path high explosive having a first density and said main cavity being charged with a second, greater density of said high explosive.

5. A shaped charge booster assembly as described by claim 4 wherein the wall enclosure surrounding said primer path is about 0.080″ to about 0.100″ thick.

6. A shaped charge booster assembly as described by claim 4 wherein high explosive material within said primer path is charged with a density of about 1.1 to about 1.2 g/cc and said high explosive material in said main cavity is charged with a density of about 1.5 to about 1.6 g/cc.

7. A booster assembly for detonating a high explosive shaped charge, said booster assembly comprising an integral metallic casement having a substantially cylindrical outside diameter of about 0.280″ or less, said casement having a substantially axial primer path circumscribed by a first casement wall thickness, said primer path opening into a main cavity circumscribed by a second casement wall thickness that is less than said first wall thickness said second casement wall being an integral continuation of said first casement wall and a distal end plug of said tubular wall enclosure defining an end wall of said main cavity opposite of said primer path.; said primer path and main cavity being respectively charged with a high explosive material having decomposition shock properties sufficient to detonate a high explosive said high explosive material in said primer path being packed to a density that is less than the density of said high explosive material in said main cavity.

8. A shaped charge booster assembly as described by claim 7 wherein said primer path material density is about 1.1 g/cc to about 1.2 g/cc.

9. A shaped charge booster assembly as described by claim 7 wherein said main cavity material density is about 1.5 g/cc to about 1.6 g/cc.

10. A shaped charge booster assembly as described by claim 7 wherein the first casement wall thickness is about 0.080″ to about 0.100″.

11. A shaped charge booster assembly as described by claim 7 wherein said second casement wall thickness is about 0.010″ or less.

12. A shaped charge booster assembly as described by claim 7 wherein said primer oath comprises a substantially axial bore of about 0.045″ to about 0.080″.

13. A shaped charge booster assembly as described by claim 1 wherein the second wall thickness is about 0.010″ or less.

14. A shaped charge booster assembly as described by claim 1 wherein the first wall thickness is about 0.080″ to about 0.100″.
