Abstract

The invention is a bladder formed of multiple layers of barrier film to provide multiple pressurized layers of cushioning fluid or gas when the bladder is filled. The sidewalls of the bladder can be constructed with an inverted seam construction to eliminate finishing steps in the manufacture of cushioning bladders and alternatively to provide a clean, seamless appearance along the side walls. The inverted seam can be formed by attaching the peripheral edges of inner barrier layers to the outer barrier layers adjacent a weld between inner barrier layers to provide an inside-out inverted seam appearance. An inverted seam can also be formed by providing separate sidewall elements attached to the barrier layers of the bladder to provide a seam displaced from the center of the sidewall.

Claims (37)

1. A fluid-filled bladder for an article of footwear, said bladder comprising:

a first sheet;

a second sheet that is at least partially coextensive with said first sheet;

a first sidewall element defining a first end and a first exterior surtice, said first end being secured to said first sheet to position at least a portion of said first exterior surface on an exterior of said bladder, and said first sidewall element extending through a first portion of a distance between said first sheet and said second sheet;

a second sidewall element defining a second end and a second exterior surface, said second end being secured to said second sheet to position at least a portion of said second exterior surface on said exterior of said bladder, and said second sidewall extending through a second portion of said distance between said first sheet and said second sheet; and

an inverted seam firmed between said first exterior surface and said second exterior surface to join said first sidewall element and said second sidewall element and define a sealed chamber for containing said fluid.

2. The bladder of claim 1 , wherein a distance between said inverted seam and said first sheet is greater than a distance between said inverted seam and said second sheet.

3. The bladder of claim 1 , wherein said fluid is a gas at a pressure above an ambient pressure.

4. The bladder of claim 1 , wherein said first sheet, said second sheet, said first sidewall element, and said second sidewall element are formed from a barrier material.

5. The bladder of claim 1 , wherein at least two of said first sheet, said second sheet, said first sidewall element, and said second sidewall element are formed from different barrier materials.

6. The bladder of claim 1 , further including a tensile member positioned between said first and second sheets fur maintaining a shape of said bladder.

7. The bladder of claim 6 , wherein said tensile member is secured to inner surfaces of said first sheet and said second sheet.

8. The bladder of claim 7 , wherein said tensile member is at least two sheets of barrier material secured together to form an internal fluid-filled bladder.

9. The bladder of claim 6 , wherein said tensile member is formed from a barrier material.

10. The bladder of claim 6 , wherein said first sidewall element and said second sidewall element form said tensile member.

11. The bladder of claim 6 , wherein said tensile member is a single element of sheet material.

12. A fluid-filled bladder for an article of footwear, said bladder comprising:

a first sheet of a barrier material;

a second sheet of a barrier material that is at least partially coextensive with said first sheet;

a first sidewall element of a barrier material defining a first end and a first exterior surface, said first end being secured to said first sheet to position at least a portion of said first exterior surface on an exterior of said bladder, and said first sidewall element extending through a first portion of a distance between said first sheet and said second sheet;

a second sidewall element of a barrier material defining a second end and a second exterior surface, said second end being secured to said second sheet to position at least a portion of said second exterior surface on said exterior of said bladder, and said second sidewall extending through a second portion of said distance between said first sheet and said second sheet;

en inverted seam formed between said first exterior surface and said second exterior surface to join said first sidewall element and said second sidewall element and define a sealed chamber for containing said fluid; and

a tensile member positioned between said first sheet and said second sheet for maintaining a shape of said bladder, said tensile member being secured to inner surfaces of said first sheet and said second sheet.

13. The bladder of claim 12 , wherein said tensile member is at least two sheets of a material secured together to form an internal fluid-filled bladder.

14. The bladder of claim 12 , wherein a distance between said inverted seam and said first sheet is greater than a distance between said inverted seam and said second sheet.

15. The bladder of claim 12 , wherein said first sidewall element and said second sidewall element form said tensile member.

16. The bladder of claim 12 , wherein said fluid is a gas at a pressure above an ambient pressure.

17. A fluid-filled bladder for an article of footwear, said bladder comprising:

a first sheet of a barrier material;

a second sheet of a barrier material that is at least partially coextensive with said first sheet;

a first sidewall element of a barrier material defining a first end and a first exterior surface, said first end being secured to said first sheet to position at least a portion of said first exterior surface on an exterior of said bladder, and said first sidewall element extending through a first portion of a distance between said first sheet and said second sheet;

a second sidewall element of a barrier material defining a second end and a second exterior surface, said second end being secured to said second sheet to position at least a portion of said second exterior surface on said exterior of said bladder, and said second sidewall extending through a second portion of said distance between said first sheet and said second sheet; and

an inverted seam formed between said first exterior surface and said second exterior surface to join said first sidewall element and said second sidewall element and define a sealed chamber for containing said fluid,

wherein said first sidewall element and said second sidewall element extend into an interior portion of said bladder to form a tensile member positioned between said first sheet and said second sheet, said tensile member being secured to inner surfaces of said first sheet and said second sheet to maintain a shape of said bladder.

18. The bladder of claim 17 , wherein a distance between said inverted seam and said first sheet is greater than a distance between said inverted seam and said second sheet.

19. The bladder of claim 17 , wherein said sidewall element and said second sidewall element are attached to each other in said interior portion of said bladder to form an internal bladder.

20. The bladder of claim 17 , wherein said fluid is a gas at a pressure above an ambient pressure.
