Abstract

Data concerning post-consumption items is collected from RF tags. RF tags applied to goods and materials that have been consumed or used and/or discarded or stored for recycling are read by a reader. The reader collects data from the tag and stores the data and/or transmits the collected data to a computing device such as a building management or host computer. A computing device associated with the reader may also retrieve data associated with the RF tag from one or more datastores of information concerning the post-consumption item. Additional processing may be performed to determine the composition and other attributes of the item or material. Based upon the data retrieved from the RF tag, and optionally, data in the datastore(s), and/or processing occurring within the associated computing device, characteristics including the composition and nature of the post-consumption items, location of the items and other characteristics and associated information are determined. The data may be collected, sorted, processed, and provided for sale.

Claims (35)

1. A method for retrieving recyclable items, the method comprising:

associating an RF tag with a recyclable container having a consumable product placed therein;

retrieving data comprising at least one of a plurality of data elements from the RF tag;

processing the at least one data element retrieved from the RF tag;

storing the processed at least one data element data in at least one datastore;

making the processed at least one data element available for purchase;

determining that a receptacle containing the RF-tagged container is filled based on at least one of weight and volume information retrieved from the RF tag; and

scheduling a retrieval of the RF-tagged container based on at least one of determining that the receptacle is filled and on a market price of the RF-tagged container, wherein the RF tag is attached to the container by applying a non-conductive material on the container and a circuit upon the non-conductive material.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one data element retrieved from the RF tag identifies the consumable product placed within the container.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one data element retrieved from the RF tag identifies a manufacturing location of the consumable product.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one data element retrieved from the RF tag identifies a manufacturing day of the consumable product.

5. A method for tracking use of a consumable item, the method comprising:

associating an RF tag with a recyclable container having the consumable product placed therein, the RF tag being attached to the container by applying a non-conductive material on the container and a circuit upon the non-conductive material;

retrieving data comprising at least one of a plurality of data elements from the RF tag upon disposal of the container;

processing the at least one data element retrieved from the RF tag;

storing the processed at least one data element data in at least one datastore;

making the processed at least one data element available for purchase;

determining that a receptacle containing the RF-tagged container is filled based on at least one of weight and volume information retrieved from the RF tag; and

scheduling a retrieval of the RF-tagged container, wherein the processing of the at least one data element further comprises:

determining a purchase location of the consumable item; and

comparing a disposal location of the consumable item with the purchase location.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the comparison of the purchase location with the disposal location determines pricing of the consumable item.

7. A method for tracking use of a consumable item, the method comprising:

associating an RF tag with a recyclable container having the consumable product placed therein, the RF tag being attached to the container by applying a non-conductive material on the container and a circuit upon the non-conductive material;

retrieving data comprising at least one of a plurality of data elements from the RF tag upon disposal of the container;

processing the at least one data element retrieved from the RF tag;

storing the processed at least one data element data in at least one datastore;

making the processed at least one data element available for purchase;

determining that a receptacle containing the RF-tagged container is filled based on at least one of weight and volume information retrieved from the RF tag; and

scheduling a retrieval of the RF-tagged container, wherein the processing of the at least one data element further comprises:

determining a manufacturing day of the consumable item; and

comparing a disposal day of the consumable item with the manufacturing day.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the comparison of the manufacturing day with the disposal day determines a length of time between stocking of the consumable item and the disposal day.

9. The method of claim 8 further comprising:

determining a prevalence of use of a consumable item past an allowable shelf life of the consumable item.
