Abstract

A telecommunications assembly including a housing and a plurality of modules mounted within the housing. The modules includes a rear face in which is mounted at least one fiber optic connector. Within an interior of the housing are positioned at least one fiber optic adapters. Inserting the module through a front opening of the housing at a mounting location positions the connector of the module for insertion into and mating with the adapter of the housing. The adapters within the interior of the housing are integrally formed as part of a removable adapter assembly. A method of mounting a telecommunications module within a chassis. The modules include a connector mounting bulkhead which is moveable relative to the module to allow connector access.

Claims (28)

1. A telecommunications module comprising:

a body defining an interior and including first and second opposing faces, first and second opposing sides, a front, and a rear;

a bulkhead positioned to hold connectors at a location between the front and the rear, the bulkhead positioned to hold a plurality of fiber optic connectors so that ends of the fiber optic connectors face in a direction toward the rear of the body, wherein a longitudinal connector axis of each fiber optic connector extends generally parallel to a longitudinal axis of the body extending between the front and the back;

a pivotal mount between the bulkhead and the body, wherein the ends of the fiber optic connectors are pivotal away from the body in a pivoted position, and wherein the ends of the fiber optic connector are positioned adjacent to the body in a non-pivoted position such that when the fiber optic connectors are in the non-pivoted position, the longitudinal connector axis of each fiber optic connector extends generally parallel to a plane that is parallel to the first and second opposing faces of the body and when the fiber optic connectors are in the pivoted position, the longitudinal connector axis of each fiber optic connector extends generally at a non-parallel angle to the plane that is parallel to the first and second opposing faces of the body;

a cable access positioned at the front of the body, the cable access in communication with the interior, the bulkhead also in communication with the interior, wherein a cable pathway is provided from the cable access to the bulkhead.

2. The telecommunications module of claim 1 , further comprising:

a plurality of fiber optic connectors mounted to the bulkhead.

3. The telecommunications module of claim 2 , further comprising:

a mounting flange extending beyond each opposing side of the body.

4. A method of using a telecommunications module comprising:

providing a module including a body having a front and a rear, first and second opposing faces, and first and second opposing sides, and a bulkhead mounted to the body, the bulkhead holding at least one fiber optic connector wherein a longitudinal connector axis extends parallel to a longitudinal axis of the module extending from the front to the rear, wherein an end of the fiber optic connector faces toward the rear and is disposed at a spaced apart distance from the rear;

pivoting the bulkhead relative to the body wherein the end of the fiber optic connector is moved from a first position adjacent to the body to a second position spaced further from the body than the first position, wherein, in the first position, the longitudinal connector axis of the fiber optic connector extends generally parallel to a plane that is parallel to the first and second opposing faces of the body, and, wherein, in the second position, the longitudinal connector axis of the fiber optic connector extends generally at a non-parallel angle to the plane that is parallel to the first and second opposing faces of the body;

after pivoting the bulkhead to position the end of the fiber optic connector in the second position, pivoting the bulkhead relative to the body in a reverse direction wherein the end of the fiber optic connector is moved from the second position back to the first position.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the bulkhead holds a plurality of fiber optic connectors, wherein the longitudinal axis of each connector extends parallel to the longitudinal axis of the module.

6. The method of claim 4 , further comprising the step of unlocking the bulkhead from the body before pivoting the bulkhead relative to the body to move the fiber optic connector from the first position to the second position.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising the step of engaging a stop to limit the amount of pivoting when the fiber optic connector is moved from the first position to the second position.

8. The method of claim 4 , further comprising the step of engaging a stop to limit the amount of pivoting when the fiber optic connector is moved from the first position to the second position.

9. A telecommunications module comprising:

a body including first and second opposing faces, first and second opposing sides, a front, and a rear;

a bulkhead positioned to hold connectors at a location between the front and the rear, the bulkhead positioned to hold a plurality of fiber optic connectors so that ends of the fiber optic connectors face in a direction toward the rear of the body, wherein a longitudinal connector axis of each connector extends generally parallel to a longitudinal axis of the body extending between the front and the back;

a pivotal mount between the bulkhead and the body, the pivotal mount defining a pivot axis generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the body extending between the front and the back, wherein the ends of the fiber optic connectors are pivotal about the pivot axis such that ends of the fiber optic connectors are pivotal away from the body in a pivoted position and are positioned adjacent to the body in a non-pivoted position such that when the fiber optic connectors are in the non-pivoted position, the longitudinal connector axis of each fiber optic connector extends generally parallel to a plane that is parallel to the first and second opposing faces of the body and when the fiber optic connectors are in the pivoted position, the longitudinal connector axis of each fiber optic connector extends generally at a non-parallel angle to the plane that is parallel to the first and second opposing faces of the body, wherein, when the ends of all the fiber optic connectors are fully pivoted, the ends of all the fiber optic connectors are positioned generally an equal distance away from the body.

10. The telecommunications module of claim 9 , further comprising a plurality of fiber optic connectors mounted to the bulkhead.

11. The telecommunications module of claim 10 , further comprising four fiber optic connectors mounted to the bulkhead.

12. The telecommunications module of claim 9 , further comprising a mounting flange extending beyond each opposing side of the body.

13. The telecommunications module of claim 9 , wherein the bulkhead is configured such that all of the ends of the fiber optic connectors are configured to be pivoted together at the same time.

14. The telecommunications module of claim 9 , wherein the pivot axis is positioned between the first and second opposing faces.

15. The telecommunications module of claim 9 , wherein the pivot axis is generally parallel to the rear of the module.

16. The telecommunications module of claim 9 , further comprising a stop for limiting the amount of pivoting when the ends of the fiber optic connectors are moved from a non-pivoted position to a pivoted position.
