Abstract

An interior rearview mirror assembly includes a reflective element having a front surface that is viewable by and directed generally toward a driver of a vehicle when the mirror assembly is installed in the vehicle. An overlay element applied to the front surface of the reflective element includes at least one user input for controlling at least one accessory or display of the mirror assembly or vehicle. An electrical connector connects the overlay element to circuitry at or within or associated with the mirror assembly. The overlay element may be applied to the reflective element at a desired location on the surface of the reflective element to provide a user input and/or a display at the front of the reflective element where it is readily viewable and accessible by a driver or occupant of the vehicle.

Claims (44)

1. A rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle comprising:

a mirror reflective element having a front surface that is viewable by and directed generally toward a driver of the vehicle when said mirror assembly is installed in the vehicle;

an overlay element applied onto and at least partially over a portion of said front surface of said reflective element, said overlay element comprising at least one user input for controlling at least one accessory of said mirror assembly; and

an electrical ribbon harness connecting said overlay element to circuitry.

2. The rearview mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein said reflective element is positioned at least partially at a bezel portion of said mirror assembly, said overlay element being positioned generally adjacent to a portion of said bezel portion.

3. The rearview mirror assembly of claim 2 , wherein said electrical ribbon harness is routed around a perimeter edge of said reflective element and between said reflective element and said bezel portion.

4. The rearview mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein said overlay element includes at least one illumination source for backlighting at least one of an icon and said user input.

5. The rearview mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein said overlay element includes at least one display element for displaying information.

6. The rearview mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein said overlay element is positioned adjacent to or at least partially around a display area of said reflective element, said mirror assembly including at least one display element for displaying information at said display area.

7. The rearview mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein said overlay element includes a substantially transparent portion that is positioned at least partially over a display area of said reflective element, said mirror assembly including at least one display element for displaying information at said display area and through said substantially transparent portion.

8. The rearview mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein said user input comprises a membrane switch exhibiting tactile feedback when pressed.

9. The rearview mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein said at least one accessory comprises a display for displaying information.

10. The rearview mirror assembly of claim 1 including a display, said display being associated with said at least one accessory.

11. The rearview mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein said circuitry is located at least partially within said mirror assembly.

12. The rearview mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein said mirror assembly comprises a substantially frameless mirror assembly.

13. The rearview mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein said accessory comprises a garage door opener device.

14. The rearview mirror assembly of claim 1 , wherein said overlay element comprises a flexible substrate applied to said front surface of said reflective element.

15. A rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle comprising:

a mirror reflective element having a front surface that is viewable by and directed generally toward a driver of the vehicle when said mirror assembly is installed in the vehicle;

an overlay element applied to said front surface of said reflective element, said overlay element comprising at least one user input for controlling at least one accessory of said mirror assembly, wherein said overlay element is adhesively applied to said front surface of said reflective element; and

an electrical ribbon harness connecting said overlay element to circuitry.

16. A rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle comprising:

a mirror reflective element having a front surface that is viewable by and directed generally toward a driver of the vehicle when said mirror assembly is installed in the vehicle;

an overlay element applied onto and at least partially over a portion of said front surface of said reflective element, said overlay element comprising at least one user input for controlling at least one accessory of said mirror assembly; and

an electrical ribbon harness connecting said overlay element to circuitry, said electrical ribbon harness being routed around a perimeter edge of said reflective element.

17. The rearview mirror assembly of claim 16 , wherein said reflective element is positioned at least partially within a bezel portion of said mirror assembly, said overlay element being positioned generally adjacent to a portion of said bezel portion, said electrical ribbon harness being routed around said perimeter edge of said reflective element and between said perimeter edge and said bezel portion.

18. The rearview mirror assembly of claim 16 , wherein said overlay element includes at least one illumination source for backlighting at least one of an icon and said user input.

19. The rearview mirror assembly of claim 16 , wherein said overlay element includes at least one display element for displaying information.

20. The rearview mirror assembly of claim 16 , wherein said overlay element is positioned adjacent to or at least partially around a display area of said reflective element, said mirror assembly including at least one display element for displaying information at said display area.

21. The rearview mirror assembly of claim 16 , wherein said overlay element includes a substantially transparent portion that is positioned at least partially over a display area of said reflective element, said mirror assembly including at least one display element for displaying information at said display area and through said substantially transparent portion.

22. The rearview mirror assembly of claim 16 , wherein said overlay element comprises a flexible substrate applied to said front surface of said reflective element.

23. A rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle comprising:

a mirror reflective element having a front surface that is viewable by and directed generally toward a driver of the vehicle when said mirror assembly is installed in the vehicle;

an overlay element applied to said front surface of said reflective element, said overlay element comprising at least one user input for controlling at least one accessory of said mirror assembly, wherein said overlay element is adhesively applied to said front surface of said reflective element; and

an electrical ribbon harness connecting said overlay element to circuitry, said electrical ribbon harness being routed around a perimeter edge of said reflective element.
